My first thought is: “college” football.
Since the sports landscape is already skewed with bizarre anti-free-market legislation, I would like to hear ideas about the NCAA putting in spending caps for football programs based on student body size.
This in addition to allowing players freedom to get paid by alums or for signatures or public appearances, etc .
When you stop and think, do you really care if an alum wants to give a kid $50k to play for Auburn? What if an alum wanted to help a bright student with living expenses as she pursued a med degree?
Two adults. Why not?

Because the guy slipping the kid $5000 dollars could be from Vegas and asking him to throw the game. You have to have a system that protects the integrity of the game. I’m not defending the status quo, but do believe you have to have rules to keep the playing field level for athletic competition.

But point shaving is already a crime. Why does the NCAA need to ban all forms of payment to players in order to prevent payments that are already criminal?

Didn’t say and don’t support the NCAA banning all forms of payment. Just don’t think alumni or other interested parties should be slipping $50’s into the hands of athletes without proper supervision. The NCAA already approves some forms of payments and now the COA stipends. They should go further, but I don’t think an open market is the solution either. Underneath all of this absurd money is still a game that is played and requires a level playing field as possible to be fair to the participants.

I’d say they are more susceptible to bribe now, feeling shut out of the system and walking around broke. There are all sorts of opportunities in sports and life for bad things to happen. I don’t think you have a strong argument that more bad things will happen because we give these kids the same liberty as the rest of the country.

Salary caps based on the size of the student body? In 2 years Alabama would have 600,000 students to maximize their cap. And bigger class size is just what colleges need to put out more snowflakes.

Not surprising at all with a university where the president basically admitted the HC had more power/authority than he did. And the fans and NCAA were absolutely astounded that things were passing under the table when a booster had been selling signed equipment by ohio players for years all over the state. Where did they think the shoulder pads, jerseys, and helmets were coming from without cooperation from the AD? Dirty program, but it is the Big? so no one keeps close watch or turns them in. Remember Claret’s $12K sound system for his SUV when it was reported stolen? No one thought that was an oddity, or a red flag; never even recall it being investigated. Dangerous place for a predator like Corch to hide out.

I’ve been wondering along the same lines. Ok, you can’t pay the kids playing, but is there anything to stop the school from having a professional (in the sense of paid employees) scount team. And then you wonder would kids rather ‘play’ football for a scholarship or would the rather be paid to just practice.
