Dabo, to me, has become the story of college football. Clemson beating Urban Meyer and OSU 31-0 is amazing. Clemson repeating against Bama is amazing. No matter the outcome tonight, we have watched a coach outside the Saban/Meyer duo and a team outside the traditional power group make it on the national stage. Again. Instead of excuses, Dabo went to work and took advantage of Georgia’s and the South’s rich recruiting base. I see no reason why that formula won’t work at UGA. So, please, no more “we aren’t Bama” excuses. That is not the way to win championships.

    • It’s more than just Dabo. It’s their whole program. Post-Bowden, they stopped whining and started building infrastructure and support staff and beefed up recruiting. Throw in yet another dual purpose QB from GA that UGA missed on and there you have it.

Exactly, Dabo is a terrific man, and a solid coach. He deserves credit for raising the level of the Clemson program but beating ohio on the field no more makes great than losing to Pitt (and basically NCST) meant he didn’t do his job. Coaches get too much credit, and too much blame, when things don’t go as the public’s expectations were set by the media. The Big 14 wasn’t as great as everyone thought one month ago, surprise, surprise.

Like most coaches riding the wave of being at, or near, the top, he came close to being at home watching this on TV (Pitt, NCST, Troy, Va Tech, Auburn, FSU). Great recruiting, solid staff, playing in the ACC, players executing well, several good breaks/calls, all contribute to why he is on that podium.

      • One thing I’ll forgive but never forget regarding Richt & Bobo … the abject failure in the recruiting of one Deshaun Watson. He has all of the skills of DJ Shockley, and all of that was clearly on display throughout his time as the QB at Gainesville High School.

He was never coming to UGA. He grew up a Clemson fan from my understanding. He turned down Bama money to go there.

          • I heard he grew up as a Georgia fan, and we let Dabo and Chad Morris get in on him early when we weren’t making early offers. Who knows?

The guy who told me that was a descendant of the man who funded their Habitat for Humanity home and was a donor to the Gainesville High booster club. Have heard the same story from others affiliated with Gainesville High as well but no proof. As you say, who knows?

I don’t think UGA ever had a real shot at Watson. UGA’s offense was never geared to a true dual threat Q, and they weren’t going to change. And we as fans would be mistaken if we did not take into account the fact that recruits know or have a good knowledge of the players and commits already with the team as well as their system.
Could Watson have beat out Mason as the starter at UGA? You bet.
Would he be playing in his second National Championship? Likely not, given the team he would have had around him.
I used to poke fun at Dabo, but hearing him speak and where he came from? Not so much any more. He’s an impressive guy. Deshaun Watson is a local kid for me, and he too is a young man of exceptional character. The Heisman committee hosed him IMO, and I will be pulling for an them tonight.
          YMMV.

It wans’t geared toward a dual threat because Bobo couldn’t or wouldn’t adapt. Richt won with DJ.

Yeah. I think you can blame Bobo a little here. But be careful, the pitchforks and torches are always close at hand in this village.

          • For everyone who talks about our offense not being geared to a dual-threat QB, please remember Richt’s first recruit was DJ Shockley … a true dual threat QB. Aaron Murray was a dual-threat QB who we had to limit his running because there was no one behind him in case of injury. That’s a worn out excuse.

              • Good grief. Watch Watson … the guy doesn’t look to run first. He’s a pocket passer that is more than willing to tuck it and run when necessary. He would have thrived in Georgia’s pro style offense especially the offense that Shockley and Murray ran.

Exactly the entire program. Clemson had not won ACC champion since they stopped playing UGA yearly in ’92 until recently. The athletic department knew they had to get exposure against the SEC to recruit Georgia, and Florida.

They played Auburn, and UGA in home/aways, Bama and Auburn in the dome. Clemson start a home/away with A&M next year.

They realized the problem with getting talent on campus and did what it takes to get back on the map.

What I like about Clemson is they have found a way to elevate their program to this level…think about it…there are 120+ FBS programs all with the opportunity to climb to the top of college football…only a handful get there and stick around…

I’m not historically a big Clemson fan but I do tip my hat to them for a job well done.
