Talk about your late night news dump, this popped up about 10PM yesterday.
Rhett Lashlee is leaving his offensive coordinator position at Auburn to take the same position at the University of Connecticut.
The move was announced officially by the Huskies program on Twitter Wednesday evening after Fox Sports reporter Bruce Fedman originally broke the story minutes before.
A lateral move out of the SEC to a program that’s one of the lesser lights in the FBS? Wut? Malzahn explains.
“This is a great opportunity for Rhett to implement and run his own offense. I’ve known Rhett for two decades and he’s a man of great character and integrity and this is another step towards his goal to become a head coach. I want to thank Rhett for all of his contributions and his friendship. I want to wish he and his wife Lauren all the best in this new endeavor.”
Yeah, sure. And before you ask, no, it’s not about money.
According to USA Today’s latest database numbers, Lashlee’s annual salary last season was $601,500 with the possibility of additional bonuses that could go as high as $190,000. According to ESPN.com college football reporter Brett McMurphy, Lashlee is reportedly taking a sizable pay cut in his new position at Connecticut. McMurphy reported Wednesday night that Lashlee has agreed to a three-year deal with an annual salary of $350,000.
A fifty percent pay cut doing the same job at a shittier program is a great opportunity? Cold translation: don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out, son.
Now I doubt this is something that just came to Malzahn in the middle of the night, so the timing is noteworthy, in that five-star stud quarterback Jarrett Stidham is now safely in the Auburn fold. What’s the big deal there? Oh, not much.
Remember, kid, what they always tell you: you commit to the school, not the coach. Gus will explain it to you if you don’t understand.
Which brings us to the question who will have the opportunity to get close to Stidham, now that his former flame be gone. The list of suspects is about what you’d expect, guys like former Auburn quarterback Dameyune Craig, Jake Spavital (who’s looking for a job now), Arizona State’s offensive coordinator, Art Briles… HOLY CRAP GUS MALZAHN MIGHT HIRE ART BRILES.
I mean, what could possibly be wrong with Art Briles? He’s an offensive genius.
Briles has had a connection with Malzahn dating back years when the two staffs began trading playbook ideas with each other. Both staffs have made trips to each other’s campuses to go over new and innovative ideas with their similar offenses. And that right there is probably where this connection stops making sense. In case you’d forgotten, and I doubt many folks have, an independent review by the Pepper Hamilton law firm found that Baylor football coaches and staff interfered with investigations into sexual assault complaints against players, and even impeded potential criminal proceedings. The firm released a 13-page report on May 26, the same day Briles was immediately suspended before reaching a mutual agreement with the school for his departure about a month later. Briles hasn’t been interviewed for a job in college football since the Pepper Hamilton report was released. It would be a near impossibility for Auburn to explain this hire from a public relations standpoint.
Hey, we’re in the age of Trump. Nobody has to explain anything anymore. And you have to admit it would sure make Stidham comfy.
It would be the ultimate Second Chance U move, and if there’s any school more into second chances than Auburn, I’d be hard-pressed to name it.
If Jimmy Sexton manages to pull this off, he’s a wizard.
*************************************************************************
UPDATE: I’m shocked, shocked by the early results in this reader poll.
*************************************************************************
UPDATE #2: “No way on Art,” a high-level source told Auburn Undercover on Thursday. Thanks for getting everyone’s hopes up.
If they did hire Briles, I’d just have to tip my cap at this point to them for fully embracing Auburn-ness and just not even pretending anymore.

And, since you’re trying to be obtuse, the reason people have a “problem with it” is because your snark is completely one-sided. I don’t remember any Obama (or Clinton) snark ever on this blog, mostly just other Rs. It’s not hard to figure out, despite your attempt to strawman.

True, but those were the choices we had. Any vote for stein or Johnson served as a vote for Trump. So did sitting the election out. I was never a Hillary fan, but when you start thinking worse case scenarios you have to consider: what’s the worst that could happen if Hillary gets elected? What’s the worst that could happen if trump gets elected? In my view those were not close questions and therefore sitting it out or voting third party should not have been an option for those who made a reasonable assessment of Mein Führgrabber such as yourself.

Well, I voted 3rd party, but I always do, I figure I’m a wash either way. If we had instant runoff or ranked voting to insure that a candidate couldn’t get an entire state’s allotment of electoral votes with just a plurality, then I suspect people’s voting patterns would be much more informed and thought out.
As it is, the 2 party system is nothing more than polished tribalism.
LikeLike
Without a parliamentary system of government, 3rd parties are difficult to bring into prominence. The downside of parliamentarianism is that there are almost no checks and balances. The winners pretty much get whatever they want. The genius of our system is that little changes without broad consensus. The downside is that the fringe elements of each party control the only two real choices we have.
Finally I might not question too much bowing out in in prior elections simply because there may be equal things to be uncomfortable with for either major party candidate but I question anybody’s judgment who believes this years candidates sat in similar equipoise. The big regret I think that a vast majority of Americans will soon have is treating this human bag of shit just like any other candidate.

It seems to me that the most prominent “where’s the birth certificate?” guy in the country is best positioned to insist that the people support the legitimacy of the president elect. Undermining the PEOTUS with false, defamatory information is so like PEOTUS to do and if there’s anything we’ve learned from the “pussy grabber” it’s do the opposite of what he does in everything you do, without exception.
It also seems to me at least that the PEOTUS is no more of a traitor than Tommy Elrod was to Wake Forest. Would supporters of Tommy Elrod, knowing that he was coordinating with the opponents of Wake Forest, be traitors to Wake Forest? Well sure they are traitors, but so what? After all is having a Russian agent as President really worse than Hillary? Most Americans said “No” but majority rule is so overrated just like Meryl Streep.

Oh, I’m very popular. The FSB, the FBI, the KKK, 4Chan, RT, FOX, Pepe the Frog and the Daily Stormer all adore me. They think I’m a righteous dude. No puppet. No puppet. Believe me!

Watching the Trump supporters lose their minds over a throwaway line is quite entertaining. And here I was thinking the sensitive snowflakes were confined to liberal college campuses.

They do… But they’re still full of Hillarity supporters. It’s too soon.

On a football note: The thought of Auburn (or anyone) hiring Art Briles makes me absolutely sick. Definitely a dirty move to lure Stidham in and then kick his favorite coach to the curb.

two reporters suggest that Briles is a candidate for the OC job at Auburn and we react. Folks, this is a trial balloon to gauge reaction… they ain’t hiring him even at Auburn…maybe next year but not this one …too soon. He could be an analyst though…..it kinda worked out for Saban and Sark….kinda. While we’re speculating I bet Lashlee makes it back to the big leagues sooner rather than later…..he had some serious flaws to deal with in the Auburn offense( not that there is anything wrong with that) that were not completely his fault..

“two reporters suggest”?
Nah, more like Sexton trying to work the room. May not succeed — I don’t expect it will — but there’s more going on than just some casual speculation in the media.

Coaching is weird. Some guys never get another sniff and some guys just keep getting recycled. I suspect that briles gets another job somewhere.

If only there is a tweet of Briles wearing a “Make Auburn Great Again” hat that wraps this whole thing together.

This is soooooo Auburn. It could only be more Auburn if they hire Bridles and then petition Trump to pardon Sandusky so they can have a new defensive coordinator as well…

at this moment Obama has pardoned and commuted the sentence of more people than any President ever and he is the President who can ,and they usually do ,pardon lots of folks with no political repercussions at the end of their Presidency. Pardons come from the POtUS leaving not the one just getting there so what we have here is a double fault…..neither funny nor true….thanks for trying though.

That’s true so long as you define “any President ever” not to include FDR, Grant, LBJ, etc. etc. etc. Not to mention guys like Nixon who pardoned almost 1,000 in only 62 months.

White House Counsel to the President Neil Eggleston is the source of my information, somehow I think he would know. It really wasn’t my point though…my point was that Presidents leaving the White House are the pardoners-in -chief when they leave they pardon or commute the sentence of their half brothers or their Whitewater co-conspirators. Pardons and commutations are issued when there is no longer a political consequence for their actions. I’m not going to spend much time looking into it but the legend on these Justice Dept prior pardons and commutations seems to change from administration to administration and don’t discriminate between pardons/clemency and commutations so apples and oranges seems a potential problem. It is very obvious that Obama is commuting the excessive sentences of folks who were sentenced for crack as opposed to cocaine so yeah more pardons and commutations than any President who didn’t come after a Civil War where I suppose he had to pardon all southern soldiers and a President who severed 4 terms(FDR) . Commutations are NOT pardons …they leave the person a felon but shortens a sentence….thanks for helping with the fake fake news though

They vast, overwhelming majority of these are nonviolent drug offenders.
If you want to see pardons that should have pissed you off, you can start with Nixon, Richard M and Libby, I. Lewis.

That’s pretty rich…. Non violent crack dealers. Were you home schooled? Didn’t get out much. Still don’t. Drugs equal violence… Somewhere along the distribution chain there is always violence. . I really give a rats Azz what you smoke drop shoot snort or rub into your belly button. Until it effects me. In my work environment it effects me.

Alcohol equaled violence when we were dumb enough to try to stop Americans from getting high. These people will huff gas and sniff glue but we think we can prevent cocaine abuse. Good luck with continuing to lose the war on drugs.

I didn’t say crack. I said nonviolent drug offenders–which our prisons are filled with.

In Auburn’s defense..they kind of have a moral obligation. They are the givers of second chances to the vile. Only they can do this and not have to explain it to the world. In other words, yes, “Auburn’s gonna’ Auburn”..nobody does it better.

Speaking of giving folks a second chance, how bout Bama? Serious really. What better person to help Saban get up to par and fast offenses. No one would question him on this move. He is Saban.
For politics, it always amazes me, the hypocrisy that is out there on both sides. Rant and rail on Obama, bout someone’s rants on Trump, hell to pay from these same folks and it goes both ways.
The main thing that bothers me about Trump is he is the ultimate con man. Tell this to his followers and they get pissed off and bring up Obama. One will have to live and learn
Will say this blog has some from the far end of both sides. Entertaining.

Trump was elected in part as a result of the pathetic state of the republican party and it’s inability to come up with a viable candidate. There were how many on stage with him, like 12???
The real reason a guy like Trump won is due to the even more despicable democrat party and its slimy candidate. Hilary is lying, self serving bitch and she thought she was entitled to the White House. She sat on her ass instead of running an effective campaign and she still can’t believe she lost to Donald Trump. Fuck all the conversation about the popular vote. Trump was a neophyte in politics and he was smart enough to run a winning campaign over a lazy Washington insider.
I pray that Donald will be an effective President and I can’t say that I was excited to vote for him. But, as a friend of mine said “I’d vote for Fidel Castro over Hillary Clinton”. A lot of people apparently felt the same way.
This is the last time I’ll post on GTP about politics, but shit, we gotta do something to get us to signing day! As old as the thread is, nobody will see this anyway……love you guys!
