Just. Shut. Up.

To those of you who fervently desire for me to quit blogging about a subpar game day experience, I have a proposal.  I’ll stop discussing it if you can get Greg McGarity to quit making comments like this one:

He said part of the problem with the disgusting state of the restrooms on game days is all the ridiculous things people try to flush down the toilets, which causes them to overflow.

Next up in the blame game:  lengthy concessions experience due in part to fans using condiments in ways they weren’t intended to be used.

LOL! If I didn’t know this was real world, I would think we just entered Oz and became part of a Fairy Tale. You just can’t make this stuff up! What an embarrassment to our University………….And the overlords tolerate this and probably condone it!

I would like to hear from McG if the restrooms need more “work” after cupcake games or good games? Cupcakes hurt my stomach so that might be where all the ridiculous stuff in toilets come from with the last few years, “scheduling”, so I blame McG back.

    • It’s a stadium, dude. There are all kinds of restrictions on what you can bring in. Women’s purses are searched. People leave junk under their seats. And yet we’re supposed to believe game after game that people are misusing the toilets to the degree McGarity suggests.

Hell, if that’s true, I wouldn’t waste money upgrading the west end bathrooms.

All of this conversation around the bathrooms and the fan experience is taking time away from addressing the real issue which is HOW IN THE HELL CAN A BANQUET ROOM AND LOCKERROOM COST $63 MILLION when the entire 3rd deck only cost $25m.

The entire decision making process is so inept as to make you wonder.

As a friend said, if you have to choose between something being a conspiracy to fail on purpose or just incompetence … choose incompetence.

This from the group that complains about trash due to tailgating when a 30 gallon cardboard box is put out every 5000 square feet. Wonders why people use bushes as toilets when EVERY building with restrooms is locked on game day. Complains about the stadium not filling up at kickoff for Noon games, while understaffing the gates. GM is useless.

“[Football] teaches us when things get hard, we will work harder.” To improve the reserve fund. Y’all plebians can work out your own food and bathroom difficulties.

“That our actions will determine how we will be remembered.” Guess Greg missed that lesson…

“And to never give up.” Well, the excuse making and deflections certainly haven’t stopped. Got to admit, they are persistent!

“To work harder and dream bigger so that we can be the best.” Alright, I’m calling BS here: there has not been a proactive “dream” put forth in at least the past 10 years. Sure, there have been some badly needed renovations (Foley; still badly in need of an expansion/additional renovations), some growth (IPF), and some changes (Richt -> Smart), but all have been the definition of reactive. The West Endzone project is the first thing that might even qualify as proactive and, even then, it is largely a late reaction to the lack of recruiting space, poor locker room quality, and other teams providing both of the aforementioned (even Kentucky beat us on this).

As much as I am concerned about the amenities at Sanford Stadium and as disgusted as I get about GM’s responses, I am even more disgusted with the downward tumble of sports all around since he arrived. Our women’s basketball, which used to be second only to Pat Summit’s dynasty suck pond water. Prior to this recent hire, our baseball was inconsistent, but at least occaisionally good…now we are falling off the Cliffs of Moher. UGA.Com bragged today about how the women’s gymnastics team scored their highest points of the season but buried the fact we lost again. Hell we even lost a home swim meet to Texas this year. Other than tennis and golf, what are we good at anymore? Our basketball teams play in the second oldest facility in the conference. Our baseball stadium, despite some superficial upgrades is one of the smallest in the conference. Geez…Mark Fox is doing wonders compared to most of these coaches. Football is king and always will be…as it should be. But I see not a gradual drop in performance but across the board a major collapse of competitiveness by UGA athletic teams. And as bad as the stadium experience has gotten to be, this concerns me even more.

The drop in performance is tied directly to the squeezing of the budget in all sports across the board.

Georgia provided some needed relief to the football program last year but they are still in the bottom half of the league in budget. For the rest of the sports, Georgia is now last or in the bottom four.

While the rest of the league reinvests their media athletic revenue increases into their athletic programs, Georgia sends theirs to the UGA Foundation and elsewhere.

No amount of media spin will change this fact.

Baseball’s collapse and embarrassing facilities are totally inexcusable, IMO. Of course there’s the typical “HS Baseball in GA is incredible” and all that but saying we were “occasionally good” is understating things by a fairly wide margin. From 2001-20011, UGA baseball made the NCAA tournament 7 times and the CWS 4 times including a Runner-Up finish in 2008 (nevermind that we also own one of the only national titles in baseball in the SEC – Vand, LSU, and USCe are the only other programs). That it’s suffered through 3 straight losing seasons under one of McGarity’s hires is bad enough. That, in the process, LSU, South Carolina, A&M, and Ole Miss have all renovated or completely rebuilt their stadiums to rival some of the best minor league set ups while McGarity decided to try to freeze out the green and brick houses on Kudzu Hill with some trees and add club seating while leaving the stadium capacity woefully small is just sad.

Foley could very easily be turned into one of the cooler baseball venues in college sports with some vision and a willingness to spend some money on a non-football venture. It’ll never be a huge stadium but it could certainly hold a lot more than it does now and impress recruits and students in the process. Simply do the following:

Install a bigger scoreboard between the light poles in left center field
From the batter’s eye in dead center to the right field foul pole, turn Kudzu Hill and the area where the current scoreboard is into tiered levels for students and passers-by to bring lawn chairs and coolers (very similar to what Ole miss has in their left and right fields). Take a page out of Bama’s book and allow anyone 21 and over to bring beer.
Expand down both the first and third base line.
Remove those friggin trees meant to block the green and brick houses. That’s as unique a home field advantage (especially during regionals and super regionals) as you could ever hope to have.

Boom. You have a kickass baseball stadium that will require little to no additional work thereafter.

Go to an ole miss baseball game one of the best game (all sports) expenineces for students in SEC. UGA baseball could be similar if the entire university didn’t turn into a bunch of prudes( see north campus football games). Really a sad state nowadays.

Hell, I’d settle for being able to take beer into the bleachers which replaced Kudzu Hill.

Another easy fix: cut down the trees in left/left-center, build party decks, allow beer, profit.

The mismanagement of the whole UGA baseball experience is something I just cant forgive the powers that be for. I was in school in the early 2000’s during the heyday of Kudzu Hill; Kudzu was the place to be on a Friday night. Gradually they took alcohol away, then grilling, then you couldn’t bring chairs etc. Not only did it kill a lot of interest in the program but it killed a home field advantage.

My experience at games must be different than most of y’all. I go in the stadium early. Usually 45 minutes before kickoff. There are usually 5-10K in the stadium when I get there. I use the restroom and get concessions (a bottle of water and coke for my plastic-tube of bourbon) before the game starts usually at least 20 minutes before kickoff. The bathroom may be old, but it is acceptably clean. I normally don’t have to use the restroom again until after the game and will do so outside the stadium. When I do have to use the restroom there, 20% of the guys are pissing on the wall or floor instead of the toilet and some ass is trying to flush a bbq sandwich and a water bottle, also while pissing on the floor. As I said last week. It doesn’t matter how nice or new a bathroom is, if people piss and vomit on the floor and walls, there will be piss and vomit on the floor and walls. What we really need are segregated bathrooms. One group for civilized people that are toilet trained and another for savages.

I come in early as soon as they open the gates. The restrooms look great the first game of the season but deteriorate all season. They run out of toilet paper and paper towels before the game is over. Women tend to be less messy than men but by the end of the game the bathrooms are yuck. Staying hydrated means I have to use them more than just when I first enter the stadium.

And that’s great. But is it really reasonable to design stadium bathrooms for people who will only use them once, before kickoff? What if someone has to go twice? What if someone has to go #2, instead of #1? Should those people just stay home? Should we expect that 90k+ people can get by for 3.5 hours on three gallons of hand soap and five rolls of paper towels?

It really is easy to have decent bathrooms. Go to any random stadium in America on a Saturday afternoon and the odds are that the bathrooms will be in better shape than in Athens. Should we adopt the Stingtalk opinion that UGA fans are incapable of using toilets properly? Or could the problem lie in the way the bathrooms are administered?

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, the average fan is just a backdrop for the gameday broadcast. With the TV money, Corporate Suite money and the bowl money, the school just doesn’t need the peanuts that are generated by the average fan. If they GAS they would schedule just one warm up cupcake a year but if you keep buying cupcakes they will keep delivering cupcakes. I was in the South Stands for 25+ years and with the exception of paint and changing the way the urinals flushed nothing much changed. The bathrooms are small and they can’t really expand them. Just suck it up and pay up or don’t. You can keep your cumulative for a $100.00 a year contribution so stop using that for an excuse to hold on to your seats.

I suppose I can understand the thinking of why improve something that is barely passable when the facility is only used 8 times a year (6 football games, 1 spring practice, 1 grad ceremony).

What gets me is why such a large facility only gets used 8 times a year. We had 1 big concert there that sold out in 30 minutes, everyone had a blast, and then the idea was tossed. It’s a wembley stadium sized venue in a state overflowing with homegrown musical talent and we can’t pull it together long enough to do a spring and/or summer concert?

I said I can understand the thinking, not that I agree with it. They see a few thousand folks shelling out four figures for 6 opportunities to attend an event at a facility they deem adequate enough while their 7 and 8 figure donors and coaches have other “needs”.
Meanwhile, they let the facility languish for the majority of the year rather than use it as an opportunity to bring in additional revenue. But hey what else is new; we have our one big revenue stream and a fat reserve fund so why bother with anything else right?

        Like

    • OurADisaGlorifiedAccountant

True. Why not use the concert revenue to pay for a new fan experience? As a fan base we are so conditioned to the lack of strategic planning that we don’t understand it when we hear it.
