Alabama’s spring practice may have started, but when it comes to media relations, Nick Saban is already in mid-season form.
“But philosophically, I don’t know where you came up with where we go to ball control. That’s not what we do. The New England Patriots threw the ball over 60-something percent of the time, which is more than we threw it. So, where does that assumption come from or do you do what everybody else in the media does — create some shit and throw it on the wall and see what sticks, which is what I see happening everywhere? And the people who scream the loudest kind of get the attention and then we pass some rule that everybody has to live with or some law and the consequences mess up a lot of other things. Do it all the time. We’re doing it right now.”
Saban then went off on a tangent, raising concerns about high school coaches being prohibited from working summer camps, although the NCAA rule to which he was referring was unclear.
Eventually, he got back to his original point.
“It’ll mess everything up,” Saban said. “It’s the way it goes. It’s the way it goes in the world of politics and the way it goes. The same thing with you. ‘We’re going to be more conservative and ball-control offense.’ I never said that. No one in this building ever said that. So where did you come up with that? Did you have a dream about it or what? If we caught some passes in the national championship game — we had guys open — we wouldn’t have had to control the ball. We would have had to score more touchdowns.”
Methinks that Clemson loss hasn’t set too well with the man.
By the way, that Coke bottle’s looking good. Does Saban use the same Coke for each presser, or do they change bottles?

I’ve always found it ironic how Saban will go off on various tangents that clearly have a lecturing type bent to them that is impugning; yet at the same time his body language clearly shows that he doesn’t have time for this **** and wants out of there. From the way he continually taps his fingers on the podium in an impatient manner, he’s basically saying he can’t wait to get the heck away from the podium and on to more important things….yet again he’ll sit there and go on and on about gosh knows what in the process.
Regardless, I guarantee he hasn’t smiled once since that loss in Tampa and probably won’t until he gets redemption by beating either OSU or Clemson in a title game.

I think part of the reason he goes off on the tirade is to limit questions and fill the presser with non-substantive rants. It’s a great way to get around saying “no comment” or “next question”

It’s a new bottle every press conference. He wants a brand label for each conference. He is the best at fronting the bottle even better than any of those schmoes in NASCAR. Goes back to his days when he drove the truck and stocked the stores as a GA at Kent St.

Every time I hear him I just wish I could say things like that. Because Lord knows there have been plenty of times I wanted to. He’s right, people throw stuff out all the time. My theory is it’s personality based with some of us that are detailed and analytical only hearing the exact words and most of the rest of humanity making all kinds of assumptions. But if I said anything like that I’d be fired, and the idiots that made stuff up would still be there.
I still think Saban is a jerk but every once in a while, the other person deserved every bit of it.

I respect him and I think he is intriguing. Anyone that accepts who they are and operates the way they prefer no matter what others think deserves some respect. He is lucky that his modus operandi happens to produce success, but still, he’s a special guy. Whether or not people like him or agree with his ethics isn’t important to him at all, which is cool.
