Musical palate cleanser, go cat go edition

(Sixty one years ago today), Elvis Presley appeared on ABC-TV’s ‘The Milton Berle Show’ live from the flight deck of the USS Hancock in San Diego, California. He performed ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ ‘Shake Rattle And Roll’ and ‘Blue Suede Shoes.’ It was estimated that one out of every four Americans saw the show.

Elvis sings “Heartbreak Hotel” in April, ’56 and nearly twenty months later Theron Sapp bangs into the endzone at Grant Field, breaks the drought, checks us out of Heartbreak Hotel, and goes on to get his #40 retired. Thankya vera much, big guy.

I remain a huge Elvis fan (not particularly this phase of his career), and his Heartbreak Hotel was better than most of his songs in the mid-late 50s, but the very best version I have heard was Willie Nelson and Leon Russell’s remix of that song.

At the risk of public persecution, I am not an Elvis fan. Did love the live version of “One night with you” from 68(?) though. Not a fan of Conway Twitty either, while I’m at it.
I did get turned on to Shakey Graves recently. As a child of the delta I like the raw sound.
