Now here’s a branding I can get behind.

Attaboy, Tulane.  If you’re gonna sell beer at games, do it the right way.

Tulane Athletics announces a partnership with NOLA Brewing Company to launch a new Helluva Hullaba-brew, Green Wave Beer.

Emblazoned with the angry wave and Green Wave marks on the 12 oz. can, the beer is currently in production and set to be available at Yulman Stadium for Tulane’s football home opener on Saturday, Sept. 2 against Grambling State. Green Wave Beer will also be available in local restaurants and grocery stores starting in the fall.

“Tulane Athletics is excited to extend the Green Wave brand with our very own beverage,” said Jana Woodson, Associate Athletics Director, External Relations at Tulane. “We are excited for our alumni and fans to enjoy this new beverage and support our new partnership with NOLA Brewing.”

How hard a strategy would this be to emulate at UGA?  You’ve got some great local breweries in Athens, a fan base that would lap up a Bulldogs-themed brew like crazy and an opportunity to make some money… ah, hell, what am I thinking here?  Even if they decided to do something like this, they’d screw it up by slapping a Dawg logo on some swill like Miller Lite and selling it for twice the price.

  1. Who are we kidding? The AD would sell the rights to whomever paid the most for the privilege of being the official adult beverage provider of Georgia athletics.

Senator Blutarsky, the father of Bulldog Beer! Next you’ll be advocating the establishment of a School of Brewery Science at UGA. Oh wait a minute, you already have done that.

Athens PD ticketed Creature Comforts for how they conducted their brewery tour in 2016 – the only police department I know of that has ever tried to enforce that dumb (and soon to be gone) law. It was the “emerging from an alley” for business! So cutting edge.

Anyway, whichever alcohol distributor has Greg’s ear will get the beer rights.

Boy, your last sentence there is dead on, Senator. I’ve got mixed feelings about selling beer at games, but even if they didn’t sell beer at Sanford Stadium the idea of partnering with one of the Athens breweries for an official UGA brew is such a good one. I’m sure Creature Comforts or Southern (or even Terrapin, if they’re still calling their own shots after being bought by MillerCoors) could come up with something amazing and Bulldog fans would basically set up direct deposits to buy it in bulk. UGA would make a killing off of the license for it. Maybe even enough to give the Hartman Fund folks a break on the years when they fail to provide a compelling home game!

But yeah, you’re right, we’d just get a Miller Lite bottle with a G on it.

Terrapin (Chopsecutioner, anybody?) is probably the only one that could pull it off. Maybe after CC opens the second facility, but right now they couldn’t make enough beer.

I bet eventually, after Kirby’s gone, that new recruiting center could turn into a beer garden.

Also, if you want to see this done right: Colorado State.

I remember my Dad and Uncle trying a sixer of this, sitting on a tailgate in our pasture. They pronounced it “Shitty”. If it helps qualify, they were both fans of Miller Lite at the time.

July 1977…”Billy Beer” started it all off! I believe if you can find an unopened six pack you would pay close to $100…
If UGA does come out with their own brand, I would like to see Uga holding a spiked club as our logo, just like the old scoreboard looked in our glory years….and possibly throw a RR trestle on there somewhere with drunk fans rolling down the hill!!

Maybe someone could come up with a good red brew . They never fail the taste test. A guy who worked for Molson came up with Richert’s red as a trial balloon that quickly became one of the tastiest and best-selling beers in Canada and it can be found now in the Pac NW.

Along with Miller Light, I give you Bud Lite and Natural light as shit-taste competitors.

      All time worst beer story:

As a freshman at UGA and a denizen of Russell Hall, My roommate and I acquired a case of a beer called Drewry’s fall semester.I don’t remember where we got it but I think it was $4 a case. There were 21 bottles left at the end of the year, and we left it there in the room. There was a commercial out around that time with the line “if you want a beer real bad, we got a real bad beer.” I can’t remember which one it was for, but every time I think about it I think about Drewry’s and a beer bad enough that a hundred or so UGA freshmen wouldn’t drink it.

      • In the spring of my first year at Virginia, a local store had six-packs of a Texas beer called Pearl for 99 cents. I’d bought Pearl before, but never at that low a price, so I grabbed a six-pack — and quickly found out why it was so cheap.

It was spoiled. I threw the whole thing away after the first taste.

That didn’t stop the store from selling out the entire batch in two days. And I never saw anyone else toss theirs.

Pearl Brewery was founded in San Antonio in 1883, so it may simply have been on the shelf for a while. Today, the brewery site has been transformed into a living, shopping, entertainment district and a good place to go if you visit SA.

Cow dog, not sure how Austin 85 will answer as there are some nice microbreweries out there, even better Vodka! But here in Houston we have some awesome beer engineers very close to downtown, check these out:
              Karbach
              St. Arnold
              Platypus
              Southern Star
              No Label
              8th Wonder
              B-52
Cheap flight on Southwest Airlines for a long weekend to HTown should be in your future!

I’m not Aus85, but the 512 Pecan Porter Nitro is my favorite in the winter months.

I also recommend the Peticolas Velvet Hammer. Just don’t drink too many as it does live up to its name.

Whichever one is ice cold, free, and served with Opie’s baby-back ribs from Spicewood. Closest thing to southeastern bbq I’ve found in Texas (they just don’t treat pig right here…it’s all beef).

Seriously, I don’t keep up with it there are so many. One bar has over 60 taps with all local/regional brews. But if I had to pick one….

              …Miller Lite!! 😉

IF, yeah big if, McGarrity had a brain and some marketing skills he would contract with a local micro to make a Bulldog Beer that’s only available game day weekends in Athens. It would definitely draw people in and showing up at a BBQ with a six pack of that beer would always be in style.
This would be similar to Masters gear is sold only at the Masters, and that gives the gear cache. Out here in Colorado Tropicali is gold amongst the faithful for example.

He could also strike a deal with Miller for concessions, so he wouldn’t have to risk the reserve fund.
