Roquan Smith on the irony of playing in the Rose Bowl after almost signing with UCLA. “It’s still not better than Sanford Stadium.” pic.twitter.com/dOzZjHZdLM

“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23
We all are gonna miss him. Hard to believe it’s been 3 years already.

Was thinking the same thing yesterday, hoping they had miscounted and we had one more year. His signing day boo-boo seems so fresh in my mind. Recall him saying he reached into that bag with the two hats not knowing where he was going to college. Thankfully the Falcons intervened and helped him correct that mistake, but not before we sweated a few more months to see which campus he showed up on. I didn’t know it would be that critical for UGA that June day, knew he was good but had no idea he could be great, and be such a difference maker.

Dawgnation had an article about the whole thing. Roquan came back from his UCLA visit and had silently committed to the Bruins. Only his HS school coach knew that. Then all of the UGA coaches were calling the HS coach saying don’t fax in the LOI until we have a chance to contact you. Roquan was in disbelief that everyone in the gym had on red and black and he was nervous about his decision. The HS coach told Roquan that he would not fax in the LOI until he (Roquan) was 100% certain. Then the UGA coaches called and said the UCLA LB coach had been hired by the Falcons. It was a very interesting article. If I find it I will link it.

Thanks for sharing. Great story with details I was unaware of, seems to have been best for R and UGA. Love a win/win story.

It’s such a pleasure to have young men with class represent us. I do hope he stays another year, but wish him well if he doesn’t. Even our dummies who get arrested show more class than Mayfield.

Yeah, Mayfield is really a jackass. They should have put a stop to his antics a long time ago.
Let me tell you this, if he were a different color and did the things he does–screaming profanities at fans, gesturing at his package on the sidelines, etc.–he wouldn’t be considered for the Heisman because “lack of character” and all that.

While he has handled himself well the past few weeks, you are right about his past actions. I don’t care for the Heisman but would not have voted for him because the award claims to include consideration for how they conduct themselves. But you need to get over your hangup with skin color, things will never improve with people like you who insist on making skin color the excuse/reason for everything.

That man loves him some UGA. He was going to UCLA for one coach. Thank goodness for modern technology and whoever had the foresight to shoot him that quick text when the coach took another job.

Great player and sounds like even a better person. I can’t wait to see him introduce himself to the douche from Oklahoma.
