Welp.
California’s ban on state-funded travel grew to include a ninth state on Friday with Attorney General Xavier Becerra announcing new restrictions on public employees attending work-related events in Oklahoma.
Since 2017, California has forbidden state employees from traveling to states with laws that California leaders perceive to be discriminatory against gay and transgender people.
Becerra in a news release said he added restrictions on Oklahoma because the Southern state adopted a law that could allow adoption services agencies to refuse to work with gay and transgender people…
The law prohibits the California State University and University of California systems from sending staff members or students to states on the banned list. The public university systems continue to send their athletic teams to those states for post-season events, such as the NCAA basketball tournament or college football bowl games.
Assemblyman Matt Harper, R-Huntington Beach, has asked Becerra’s department to issue a formal opinion on whether Low’s law applies to college sports. The department assigned an attorney to the question, but has not released a report.
UCLA’s football team is scheduled to play at the University of Oklahoma on Sept. 8.
I could see how that might be a problem.

Oklahoma ain’t a southern state.

Maybe not geographically “The Tulsa race riot, sometimes referred to as the Tulsa massacre,[2][3][4][5] Tulsa pogrom,[6][7][8] or Tulsa race riot of 1921, took place between May 31 and June 1, 1921, when a white mob attacked residents and businesses of the African-American community of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma.[1] This is considered one of the worst incidents of racial violence in the history of the United States.[9] The attack, carried out on the ground and by air, destroyed more than 35 blocks of the district, at the time the wealthiest black community in the U.S.”

That’s impressively insulting. Being identified as a southern state doesn’t hinge on racial violence. I know a lot of northerners and west coast people like to believe some fairy tale where all prejudice was and is limited to the south, but I’m going to have to bust your bubble here. Racial violence happened all over the country, including in Illinois. Get out of here with that trash.

UCLA’s softball team played in OKC last night, guess the coaches will be arrested when they get back to LAX. The players are safe since they are not employees.

I would move that they forfeit their win last night in protest of the horrible oppressiveness of the Oklahoma people.
Scratch that it was a win over the gators. Let it stand. Principles be damned

Kind of looks to me that it just means the state won’t pay for the travel, I know it’s more than that but still, maybe the softball team is using private funds for their travel to and from OK.

Nevermind that the travel ban is political horseshit. California is in fine shape, just drive around LA and the OC. Maybe, you can move there and provide the homeless a bed? I know the weather is great, the housing affordable and the taxes low. Disneyfornia!!!

Walt, what is it about preventing state employees from visiting Oklahoma that provides equal rights to California citizens? I see no disagreement – at least, not on my end – with equal rights for all people, gay, transgender or otherwise. My disagreement is with the methods, which in this case appear to be ineffectual and lacking any real substance in terms of driving change. Also, is there a popular tractor meme that I’m missing, or are you suggesting that those who disagree with you are likely to be purchasers of tractor equipment?

These are not their citizens Other than that, great point.
States differ to reflect the population – ergo why we have fifty states. Chicago can’t get their crime under control depite being a very wealthy city and many Los Angeles public schools are unfit for children. Should we start banning travel to those places until they stop “hating” victims of violent crime and their own children?

My niece is a lesbian. Came out at age 16. She’s deeply involved with the Episcopal Church and studying organic chemistry as an honor student at an SEC school. She’s quiet and humble. She has a wicked, dry sense of humor. She’s everything a certain community points to as an outstanding citizen and model of Christian behavior – except she’s gay.
I would trust her to raise my children or any children. I would not trust you if that one comment is any indication whatsoever of your judgment, compassion, and basic humanity.

Let’s ask Dan Mullen or Nick Saban what they think of that with regard to D1 teams from California competing in the “south”.
The UCLA softball team is in Oklahoma for the ladies NCAA Softball Championship. No need to wait until September.
Congrats to the Lady Softball Dawgs for their outstanding play. A very young team.
Dare say the California AG and their laws suffer from a strong case of sociocentrism.
Or does it violate the rights of employees to work or could be in restraint of commerce.
What we do know is that high income and property taxes states like California, Illinois, New York, and New Jersey are for all purposes have high “trade tariffs”. Those taxes are included in the cost of goods and services exported to other states.

Now that they’ve legislated California into the highest poverty and inequality rates of any state in the union, I guess it would make sense that they’d go all social justice crusade-y on locales that are easy targets politically (and outside of their legislative authority).

Concomitantly, given that African Americans, on the margin, are against gay marriage, couldn’t a travel policy that penalizes those sorts of communities for their views be characterized as… racist?

I do find California decidedly UNrighteous in their eagerness to piss on the Privileges & Immunities of U.S. Citizens (maybe not legally but certainly politically) while rolling out the red carpet for non-citizens while completely pissing in the face of the Article 1 and Article 2 branch.
