Today, in play fakes

I’ve never seen a quarterback execute this better.

Edwards did a great job of selling it, too.  I, like everyone else in the stadium that day, was totally fooled.

    It’s almost too bad we “wasted” that good of a fake on Vandy. Thereafter, it could never be timed the same way because it was on film out there — and, perhaps, other teams were better than Vandy for not falling for the fake.

    Granted, that was a different Vanderbilt program at that time — one that was more competitive than the more current iterations, but still…

      I remember Richt calling that play against USCe in Athens. Greene sold it so well it was not until Lou Holtz was coming on the field screaming and pointing at David did I notice it was a fake. Holtz looked like his head was going to explode. David totally turned his back to the defense and slowly walked backwards. Takes a brave QB to sell it that well. It’s my 3rd favorite DG play behind 4th and 27 at Auburn and the hobnail boot play UT.

    Don’t sleep on Musa’s thespian moves either. He hit that line hard. Just overall a well executed play action.

    It’s like a said the other day. Well executed play fakes are like a grift. You get the money out of the ATM for the guy, and then WTF!?!?

    It must take guts at the QB position to fake that good/long or our other QBs would do the same. Murray was fairly good with it, and I think Stet has tried it, but don’t recall Fromm really selling one.

    BTW, I believe we pulled this against Auburn in 2001 and against SC in 2004. Greene was a real master. Like some who work in Oil or Acrylics.

      We did pull this out against Auburn and it was just as effective and possibly more beautiful. There was a camera angle from the UGA sideline showing Greene’s back and in the background you can see Tommy Tuberville jumping up and down and desperately pointing to him because he clearly had an angle where he could see the football, but to no avail. Georgia scored and Auburn was lucky not to get a personal foul because a Tiger defensive lineman late hit the stuffing out of Greene and drove him into the turf for his troubles. It was a damn shame we lost that game because it took some of the shine off of one of my favorite Sanford Stadium moments as a student. I’ve been hoping it would pop up on YouTube but nobody has ever posted it.

    Greene did this repeatedly throughout his career. I always felt like he was holding the ball just a little too long, and I would get so nervous, but he was a magician and pulled it off way more often than not.

    I think the one to Gibson vs Clemson in 2003 was his best.

    I remember seeing FSU run this out of their own end zone against Clemson in ’99 or ’00. When we pulled it out against the ‘barn in ’01 I was still completely fooled.

    Pretty sure Stanford had a similar play to these, but I can’t remember who it was against.

    Found it. It was against VT in a Peach Bowl and didn’t quite get a score, but it was close.

    That play was a Richt staple and incredible to watch every time. I honestly don’t recall it failing once. Maybe that’s just because a failure isn’t as spectacular… but I would think I’d recall the kind of crushing sack that would come with screwing this up.

    Murray’s against Ole Miss was chef’s kiss… if for no other reason than in the moments leading up to it, the CBS crew said we needed to just stay consistent, maybe work in some play action, and we’d be back in the game. Boom. TD.

    Two things I really love about that clip: seeing/hearing Jefferson Pilot and the 2 Daves, and seeing Steve Martin coaching Vandy. He’s a man of many talents.

    When this play happened, I had all of my hair, was 21 years old, a senior at UGA, and was very drunk and dehydrated.

    It was most certainly NOT “Today In Play Fakes”.

    I had a date to that game for which i out kicked my coverage by a mile, but somehow managed to see this play…. i too was fooled but knew exactly what it was when everyone was perplexed because we ran it the year before vs Auburn.
