Everybody loves ‘Bama.

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Kirby has collaborated with Loran Smith on a book about the 2021 national championship season, “How ‘Bout Them Dawgs!: The Inside Story of Georgia Football’s 2021 National Championship Season”.  My understanding is that publication date is set for June 1.  (Boy, how many copies are going to make Father’s Day gifts?)  Price tag is reportedly on the hefty side ($39.95), although the buzz is that Smart has made a serious effort for the book to have some real meat to it.  But I digress.

Smart’s out promoting his book.  Here’s one story he told on the radio in the last week.

… Smart shared insight into the time between the Bulldogs’ Orange Bowl victory over Michigan and the National Championship rematch against Alabama.

He got on the phone with the Wolverines’ coaches, did some self-scouting and helped his team come away with a 33-18 win in Indianapolis for Georgia’s first title in 41 years.

“That was big. That probably gave us the biggest difference in the final game, and it was almost a phone call that didn’t happen,” Smart said on 92.9 The Game. “There’s not that long from the semifinal game to the final game, and you’ve got to use your time wisely. A lot of times when you look back and talk to the opposing team you just played, you can gain some kind of insight that they might have had on you. That was a key ingredient talking to them. They had talked to Alabama who had just beaten us in the SEC Championship. They wanted information from Alabama, so some of the information we gathered from Michigan came from information that they gathered from Alabama. It was very unique to hear that prospective, and they gave us a little bit extra incentive and motivation on some things that Alabama had said about us. Of course I was able to parlay that into motivation for our guys.”

Smart said that the majority of what he heard from Michigan coaches was that Alabama did not believe the Bulldogs were well conditioned. That showed in the SEC Championship Game when the Dawgs’ defense looked a step slower than Bryce Young and the Crimson Tide offense, giving up 536 total yards and 41 points.

However, given the motivation of the scouting report from a source so close to the situation, Smart was able to turn that into incentive for his team to get the conditioning concern fixed for the National Championship.

“Yeah, that was basically the gist of it. A lot of people don’t think you can do a whole lot in 10 days, but at the end of the year, there’s a lot of programs that are like, ‘We’re not going to hit. We’re not going to do this.’ You’re a long way into the season so you cut back, but we saw this as an opportunity to crank up a little bit and do a little more with certain guys that needed it. I thought it really made a difference.”

“It didn’t matter what Michigan told us if our kids didn’t buy into it,” Smart continued. “The kids bought into it more because they heard it from a reliable source than if it had just come from me. That part really helped, and we had about five or six guys that were getting up at about 5:30, 6:00, 7:00 in the morning and ran extra those 10 days. The conditioning level in the National Championship Game was a piece that really helped us.”

There’s a certain “enemy of my enemy is my friend” flavor to that, but even so, it’s impressive that the asskicking in the Orange Bowl didn’t cause any hard feelings.

That was very astute of Kirby. Coach Dooley always had bloody Tues. every Tues. I guess Vince had learned the same thing some time in the past.
I also think Kirby could have called any of us and found out that the team was out of shape for the SEC Champ. game. He did a great job of fixing that in a short time period.

Kirby throwing raw meat out there to promote his book. Like he needs the money…I can’t think of much worse than having to collaborate on anything with Loran Smith. He needed to be put out to pasture years ago

In any event, Kirby is the man. It’s going to be like this for a while and I’m going to love every second of it

Yeah, that has to sting Seth Emerson that Kirby chose Loran for this book. I guess Seth went to the well one too many times with his “anonymous” Beamer quotes in the 2017 book.

Loran is an institution, part of the UGA Family. Emerson is a journalist, and a good one. I remember the 1980 book, the first “Glory Glory,” but I don’t remember any of the contents, except that Herschel, Run Lindsay Run, Junkyard Dawgs finally made it to the top. Loran wrote that one. All that to say, I prefer Seth somewhat at arm’s length with Kirby. He has to ask the hard question in public sometimes. Hard to do if you’re collaborators.

Kirby asked Seth to write that book.

This is a different type of book.

Mr Loran is one of the last of who I consider “Old Georgia”. His accent, grace, manners and humility are vanishing. He deserves respect and the right to fade away on his own terms.
I was raised by folks with his attributes. It never occurred to me to show them disrespect. Back in the day being a smart-mouth to those types, male or female, would not have ended well.

Gotdam hippies got no respect for nothing!

Loran is the butt of some jokes relative to his game day radio appearances, and deservedly so, but more importantly he is a damn good dawg who deserves our respect.

Anyone who has been a dedicated to the University since at least the late 1950’s gets and deserves all REAL Bulldog’s appreciation.

Loran can have a whisky and a cigar with Larry, Erk, Vince and Lewis in God’s good time and no sooner.

Never met the man. He may be the greatest dawg ever (behind Stetson, of course) and a great human being as well. But in my opinion he is just awful to listen to or read his writing. Fortunately once Munson hung it up I quit listening to UGA games on the radio and haven’t had to hear his silly sideline reports

I understand, Jim. Certain things bother everyone. My unpopular bias was Munson’s yankee accent and nasty pronunciation of Dawg. Someone should have set Munson straight in the 1970’s.

But there’s something about listening to Loran babble inanity that says:

            Its gameday!

I always thought the funniest thing was when Larry would say:

            Loran, whaddayagot?

Loran would do his little soliloquy about God knows what and you could feel Larry react like:

What in the fuck was that?

He’s like our own Harry Caray:

I’m still amazed when I hear stories like this. The coaches are so tight with their media coverage, but willingly share direct and tangible information with each other before and after games with common opponents.

Probably not Harbaugh. Maybe Mike McDonald, UGA guy. Harbaugh has sideways accused Kirby of stuff a couple times I believe.

To the “enemy of my enemy” thing… when you work in an industry where competent people get fired very frequently, I imagine you don’t burn bridges with other successful coaches. That may be your next employer… or the next overqualified coordinator you hire.

Yep. Sometimes there is bad blood between a Goff and Spurrier that makes collaboration impossible, but these guys text message each other, play golf together, have multiple shared experiences and share the same damned agent (notice I used the singular there).

I was under the impression that the flu bug was a part of the problem during that game. Being in top shape is tough when you have to battle the flu and the gumps at the same time

I heard that also, and it is a much better explanation in my mind for the difference between our performance in the SECCG and our performance in the championship game. Kudos to Kirby for using it as motivation, but that’s about as far as it goes.

On the Loran Smith thing, I wonder if Kirby ‘chose’ Loran vs Seth. I suspect that the publisher had something to do with the choosing and Loran has sold a shit ton of books over time. If I don’t have to listen to Loran drawl on the radio I’m okay with Loran. Not many people are bigger Bulldogs than him. Plus, he won’t quibble with anything Kirby says.

I mean, we were “built by Bama,” so I guess all the salty Bama fans have no one to blame but themselves.

Well, even though this is cool to know, Kirby just assured that Saban and Bama is never gonna do this again in a similar situation. Next time we play them in Atlanta and we both make the Playoff, they’re gonna ignore calls from our semifinal opponents.

I don’t know about that. If a similar situation arises in the future, I’d expect the gumps to try to offer whatever help they can to our opponents, because they d@mn sure don’t want to face us twice.

By the way, this story now makes Kirby’s natty post-game interview make more sense. He specifically mentioned how “some people questioned their conditioning, and it pissed some people off in that locker room.” I guess now we know who “some people” were.

This is interesting for sure. We definitely kicked Michigan’s ass, but I never got the feeling that we were running the score up on them, we were just better than they were. So, I can see how they wouldn’t have had any bad feelings about Kirby or our staff. I bet Georgia spent some time talking to Michigan about TCU, too… I wonder if they also got any intel on Ohio State.

On the other hand, I really tend to doubt that the Buckeyes were too excited about helping us out after the Peach Bowl, but I guess I could be wrong. We’ll see in next year’s book I guess.

I wonder if Alabama’s coaches tried to contact Michigan back after the Orange Bowl and asked them to return the favor. I’m guessing that all they could really do was reply with the shrug emoji.

I live down here in Florida, which is where Michigan and Ohio people come to die. I was pleasantly surprised after the Michigan Semi, all their fans here just basically said we kicked their ass, no excuses or anything. The Ohio State people were just a little bit more vocal about our win. Lucky MF’s was the favorite term. I always had Georgia stuff on my car but now I’ve got the State of Florida UGA tag too. Maybe I am getting too big for my breeches.
