Actually the UF loss hurts us because they have 3 losses so they won’t be able to create the three way tie with USC. If the Dawgs run the table and UF beats USC, USC and the Dawgs would tie and they would win the tiebreaker. USC still needs to lose two more games.

USC still has to play Arkansas as well. We don’t need a three way tie. We need for USC to lose to UF and Arkansas to give them four losses.

USCe could lose to Arkansas and Florida, if we run the table in that scenario we go. Arkansas can certainly beat USCe. If Lattimore is out a lot of people could. If Lattimore isn’t hurt Kentucky does not win tonight because the Cocks can just keep feeding him the ball late and put it away. We’ve just got to focus on winning our games though. We’ll have our hands full next week and if we get by Florida Auburn’s offense is flat insane. One game at a time. Either way, some of the Georgia fans that were about to commit suicide after our early losses and wanted to fire our coach who has won 75% of his games need to rethink things. Hell MSU is 5-2 now, and at least we loss to them on the road. We got rid of our major coaching handicaps last year, all of the offensive coaches have proven they know what they are doing with past performance. Grantham appears to be making progress turning the ship around on D, if we get back to playing good defense we’ll be right back where we were 2001-2005, in every game and always in the hunt. Great day though, Florida lost, and we’re Tennessee State Champions, by a wide margin. Go Dawgs, especially you UGA VIII!

How quickly we all become myopic.

Brandon (et al), it’s not only about 2010. It’s about 2006-2010 and the trend we’re experiencing. Add the off-field problems and you’ve got real issues.

I’m not a “Fire Richt” advocate, but he isn’t Urban Meyer and should be under considerable scrutiny the rest of this season.

2009-8-5…….is this the trend you are referring to?

And quote this from a Gator fan:

JaxDawg, the trend was crappy defense that began with the departure of BVG. Willie, Fabris, et al. are gone. I’m seeing signs that the D situation is being corrected, our offense has been pretty good over that stretch you cite. The two worse years have been 06′ and 10′ when we were starting a freshman QB. Even under the best of circumstances (which with Murray thank God we are experiencing) it is not sane to expect a freshman to come in and start running the whole offense, taking the game on his shoulders, and making audibles like a 5th year senior. You have to let them grow into it like Richt/Bobo have been doing. David Greene was good but he couldn’t carry the team the first half of his freshman year, it was at least the 4th or 5th game (I think it was Tennessee) that he really started to be comfortable. I think we lost 14-9 to S.Carolina that year at home in the second game in fact. Under less than ideal circumstances you have someone with talent but who isn’t grown up mentally like Stafford was his first year. With Cox last year, he was a 5th year senior, the coaches could throw the whole game on his shoulders early on. Cox made a hell of a lot of mistakes like a freshman would but I really think a lot of that had to do with the fact that the offense was under pressure to score every dadgum time they got the ball since the defense couldn’t stop anyone, so he was always pressing. Sometimes that worked out (Arkansas last year) sometimes it didn’t. As far as the off the field problems are concerned, I’ll be concerned about felonies and domestic violence not purportedly stolen scooter helmets, emerging from an alley, and not giving your middle name. We’re still going to get beat at least once if not more times this year, as long as we’re not getting blown out or gashed by no names like Jonathan Crompton, don’t worry. Let’s keep our staff together, if Grantham gets us back to playing Georgia defense, with Murray at the helm the good days are coming back. I promise you.

SC still has to play ARK and FLA. Losing to both of them would make SC 4-4 in the SEC East. UGA has to win all remaining conference games to finish 5-3 but if the Dawgs do that winning the SEC East is still possible. FLA already has 3 SEC losses so losing to the Dawgs would make them 4-4 at best. UK also has 3 SEC losses and a loss to the Dawgs would put the Cats at 4-4 at best. UT and Vandy are probably out of it even though mathematically it is still possible for Vandy at 1-2.

Honestly I don’t think anybody’s really that good this year in the conference, not in the traditional sense. Auburn, Alabama, and Arkansas all don’t have great defenses, USCe is pretty good with Lattimore but when you take him out of the picture they are pretty average and LSU has got to be the worst undefeated SEC team this late in the year that I can recall.

The last-resort tiebreaker is highest BCS ranking (unless the second highest is within 5 spots and beat the highest ranked team head-to-head). Don’t know what happens if the tied teams are all 4-4 and unranked in the BCS. Last year no SEC team with 4 losses was ranked in the BCS standings immediately preceding the conference championship games. Stanford was the only 4-loss team ranked at all in the BCS that particular week.

In that case our Non Conference loss to Colorado would hurt us badly. Would need Carolina and Florida to lose to their in-state rivals and us to beat Tech. Then, I suspect since we would by default be the hottest team, the Dawgs would get it.

But Hobnail is right. One Game At A Time. We are likely underdogs in all our remaining conference games.

I admit I like Brandon’s solution, but I actually think the final tiebreaker is an armwrestling tournament among the head coaches from the affected schools. Someone should send CMR the DVD of that Stallone movie where he was an armwrestling trucker, just in case. Forewarned is forearmed (see what I just did there?) No way Spurrier wins that tourney; I hope Medicare covers the surgery he’ll need when CMR snaps his old arm like a twig.

Loons seem to at least a couple of universal qualities when it comes to college football: 1) they never give any credit whatsoever to opposing teams; and 2) they almost entirely discount the impact the departure of bona fide talent can have on a football team except that when such players leave then they speak of said departed players as “having covered up fundamental problems with Coach ______’s program for years”.

Heck, KENTUCKY is playing for the East right now, too. They are 1-3 in the SEC. They have, for three weeks in a row, fallen far behind early and then made a dogfight of it, almost shocking Auburn last week and then finally beating SC/Spurrier tonight. As a Dawg exiled to the bluegrass state, we are right to fear Kentucky, especially if we do not get up on them early. But, at the same time, hopefully they’ll be in letdown mode next week themselves, after the big win tonight.

But, seriously, we’re talking about our own chances in the East, but Kentucky has the right to dream in their own right. They are 1-3. Their four remaining games are: UGA, Miss St, Vandy, Tennessee. They match up well against Miss St, and I will be very surprised if they don’t win that game. Tennessee is a monkey on their back like Florida is for us, but so was Spurrier and South Carolina and they snapped that today. Kentucky has to be thinking that, if they can beat us this next week, then THEY have every right to run the table and win the East. And they only need the Gamecocks to lose one, not two.

It is an astounding year in the conference. And, yes, I agree with Brandon that it has a way of healing our angst that even winning couldn’t do for us. By simply seeing how human Florida is, how fragile the #1 position always is with Bama losing last week, how wobbly an undefeated LSU team can be, etc., we are reminded again that a bad swing of four games where we aren’t playing up to our potential and the ball doesn’t bounce our way (and we are missing our greatest playmaker) is just part of the swings that happen in the real world.

Of course, we now wish more than ever that we had made a better showing in even one of those first three conference losses, but the point is that we’re human. Just like everyone else. We haven’t slipped backwards while everyone else turned into giants. Everybody is human, and we can overcome.

Actually, the main thing we need to happen is, no matter what, for the Cocks to lose 2 more to UT, UF and/or Arkansas. If that happens, all that really matters is that we beat UK and UF. We actually don’t have to beat Auburn. If we did, we’d win it outright, if we lost on the Plains, we’d win on the tie break, no matter what UK did the rest of their games.

If that we’re to happen, we could actually lose to Auburn and Tech, and win the East at 6-6. And you know what? I’ll take it any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

    Beak Kentucky!

If we lose to Auburn and beat UK and UF, that leaves us at 4-4 in the conference. If SCU loses 2 more games in conference, that also leaves them at 4-4.

Considering they beat us head-to-head, how does that give us the tiebreaker?

      Like

      • The General

You are correct that in a scenario where UGA only loses to Auburn from here out, and SC losses two more SEC games (presumably UF and Ark), Dawgs would lose a two-way tiebreaker with SC because of head-to-head, BUT if what we’ve assumed above happens AND Florida and/or Kentucky wins every other conference game left except against UGA, each would also be 4-4 in conference, forcing a 3- or 4-way tiebreaker, and the Dawgs would win those tiebreak scenarios.

This is how that would break down:

        3-Way between UGA, SC, UF:
The first tiebreaker is combined record against the other tied teams. That’s no help because we would all have one win and one loss:
UGA 1-1 (win over UF, loss to SC)
SC 1-1 (win over UGA, loss to UF)
UF (win over SC, loss to UGA)
The next tiebreaker is East record:
        UGA 4-1
        UF 4-1
        SC 3-2
So SC is eliminated, and it goes to head-to-head between UGA and UF, which we would own.

        3-Way between UGA, SC, UK:
The first tiebreaker is combined record against the other tied teams. That’s no help because we would all have one win and one loss:
UGA 1-1 (win over UK, loss to SC)
SC 1-1 (win over UGA, loss to UK)
UK (win over SC, loss to UGA)
The next tiebreaker is East record:
        UGA 4-1
        UK 3-2
        SC 3-2
        Thus, Dawgs would go.

4-way with UGA, UF, UK, SC:
The first tiebreaker is combined record against the other tied teams:
UGA 2-1 (wins over UK and UF, loss to SC)
UF 2-1 (wins over UK and SC, loss to UGA)
SC 1-2 (win over UGA, losses to UK and UF)
UK 1-2 (win over SC, loss to UGA and UGA)
That eliminates SC and UK, and it goes to head-to-head between UGA and UF, which we would own.

Obviously if we win out and SC loses two more, we win the East outright.

If South Carolina loses only one more game, there are mathematical possibilities of a Georgia winning a 3- or 4-way tiebreaker at 5-3 in conference, but the only way to get there is if Vandy and/or Tennessee end up with 3 SEC losses (that would mean only one more loss for Vandy and/or Tennessee running the table from here out; not bloody likely).

Of the teams involved in the above scenarios, Georgia may have the toughest SEC slate left. Here is what everybody in the East has ahead in conference:

UGA: at UK; UF in JAX; at Auburn

UF: UGA in JAX (after bye week); at Vandy; home v. SC

UK: home v. UGA; at Miss St; home v. Vandy; at Tenn

SC: at Vandy; home v. Tenn; home v. Ark; at UF

Tenn: home v. Bama; at SC; home v. Ole Miss; at Vandy; home v. UK

Vandy: home v. SC; at Ark; home v. UF; at UK; home v. Tenn

Bottomline is that all of the above is whistling Dixie if we can’t get it done in Lexington next Saturday. GO DAWGS!

In a 3 team tie, if each team has lost to one of the other 2, the first tie break is division record. If SC loses to UF, they will be 3-2 in the east. If UGA beats UF and UF beats SC, both will be 4-1 in the east. Once the tiebreaker eliminates one of the two teams – it goes to head to head with exception of the BCS standings.

Were UGA to beat UK and UF and SC lose to UT or ARK, the UF-SC game would determine whether SC or UGA went to ATL. The Auburn-UGA game would mean nothing as to who represented the east.

If UGA beats UF, then UF has 4 losses. There won’t be a 3way, only a 2way tie b/w UGA and SC. SC has to lose TWO more games, period. They either have to fall behind us outright (we win out and end with 3 Ls, they end up with 4 Ls), or we have to end up in a 3way tie with them and someone else. Florida is the obvious candidate there, but FU’s loss last night already gives them 3 losses so if we beat them we screw up that tiebreaker.

This was said very well above by someone else, but I just want to make sure we understand what has to happen (counting chickens, and all that). Carolina has to lose two more games (unless we’re planning on the 3way tie involving Vandy or UT…)
