Walk on, ctd.

You may recall the video of Vandy’s casting call for walk-on players from its student body.

Five of those kids made the team.  Here’s the follow-up.

    Cool video. I would have loved to have that kind of a chance at Georgia.

    That said, the floppy-haired quarterback had better hope Vandy gets a few more O-Linemen before he gets into a game.

    A friend of mine maintains that Vandy needs to get together with Tulane, Rice, Duke, Wake Forest and others to form another Ivy League type conference in which each of those schools would be competitive. I think Vandy would be competitive in the ACC. either way Vandy has no business being in the SEC as the conference is presently constituted. Vandy actually has kids playing who would be in college if football didn’t exist. When it was formed–sure. But now–no way.

      Vandy’s not competitive in football most years, but there are sports where it is. Look at the baseball and men’s basketball teams for examples.

        I agree, which is an even more compelling reason for Vandy to join, say, the ACC or even the Big East. Imagine what that would do for Vandy’s basketball recruiting and Vandy would be a lot more competitive in the main sport, football. I’m not actually in favor of Vanderbilt leaving. I am just making the observation.

      I agree, it would be a great academic marketing tool for the Universities to be “Southern Ivies.”

      At the same time, I don’t think the schools would be willing to go full Ivy and surrender the ability to offer athletic scholarships. And wouldn’t Vandy/Duke/Wake be throwing away big-time guaranteed football money on the hope and a prayer of better basketball returns?

      Mayor – Vandy actually proposed just that in the 50’s & 60’s. Twas to be called the “Magnolia Conference.” See more – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Ivy

      As the Senator mentions further down, Vandy’s not going ANYWHERE unless the numbers make sense. I think they’re perfectly content pulling in their 20+ mil annual football share even if it means going 3-9 most years. They don’t approach anywhere near that number in the ACC, Big East – or any Magnolia-like conference where the season’s most compelling match-up is likely to be Duke-Vandy or SMU-Tulane.

    Could some of you writers with clout keep us informed about off-season workouts ; i.e., Big John says he is working out and staying in shape, but we won’t know until Aug when practice starts. Kwame’s prespring workouts benefitted him immensly when compared to the incoming Fall,previous summer. Has he continued in that vein this summer or has he begun to fall into old summer habits? Answers to these questions would have us keeping up with both and placing them on a competitive basis to help their summer workouts . Who can step onto the field in the best shape AND ensure playing time for both AT THE SAME TIME on the D line? What are your thoughts? A good way to spend the doldrums of football summer rather than nit-picking subjects that are argumentatively not necesasarily about UGA Football? I think so. You could have stories on each position and what the players are doing to ensure their condition and playing time in the Fall. The players could read your reports and try to one-up the competition for the position since that won’t occur until Fall when they appear on campus. Too late. Same goes for the new recruits.. Or do you fellows have no power to obtain info on players but make it appear so during the season? The entire subject would be welcome relief to the trivia quoted as a reason to doom the coaches and the team.

      I’d be happy to do it, but I don’t have access to that kind of information. Face it, the only guy who can speak authoritatively on that subject during the summer is Coach T, and he ain’t talking.

      Kwame is not an overnight success. I remember reading in the Bulldogs Blog that the S&C staff had taken twenty pounds off him in his first year at UGA. They said he had increased his bench press by 100lbs and his squat by 65. It took Kwame three years of hard to work to get where his is, not three months, so I don’t see him slouching off.
