The return of Dawg stat watch

Once upon a time, I faithfully tracked Georgia’s performance in several statistical categories:

  1. Hold opponents under 17 points per game.
  2. Finish at least +8 in turnover margin.
  3. Average better than 380 yards per game on offense.
  4. Finish in the top five in total defensive yardage.
  5. Finish in the top three in first downs.
  6. Finish no worse than third in passing yardage.
  7. Finish no worse than third in sacks.

Why, because those levels of performance had one thing in common.  Correlation:  when Georgia had seasons in which it met every one of those goals, it wound up playing in the SECCG.

Needless to say, I haven’t bothered following those in a while.  But as Georgia finds itself tied at the top of the SEC East this morning, I thought I’d take a crack at it again.  Here’s how the Dawgs stack up today:

  1. Hold opponents under 17 points per game.  Georgia’s defense is yielding 19.17 ppg.
  2. Finish at least +8 in turnover margin.  Georgia’s turnover margin is +2.
  3. Average better than 380 yards per game on offense.  Georgia’s offense is averaging 405.83 ypg.
  4. Finish in the top five in total defensive yardage.  Georgia’s defense ranks third in total yardage.
  5. Finish in the top three in first downs.  Georgia is tied for third in first downs.
  6. Finish no worse than third in passing yardage.  Georgia is third in passing yardage.
  7. Finish no worse than third in sacks.  Georgia is third in sacks.

Not bad, not bad at all.  The Dawgs meet five of the seven production goals there and it’s not unreasonable to expect improvement in the other two (Vandy may take care of defensive scoring next week).

I’ll keep an eye on this as long as it’s rational.

Just curious, do you know how Alabama and LSU rank?

  2. Georgia is yielding 19.17ppg, but Georgia’s defense is doing considerably better than that. Not nitpicking, just pointing to another promising sign…

Off topic, but I just wanted to share something I just saw. I was on the Knoxville newspaper’s site reading an opinion about the game and a commenter on the article actually praised Bobo while bitching about their guy. It could be worse, I guess.

I was curious if any one noticed when Grantham stopped Richt from calling a time out. Richt looked kind’ve unsure and insecure the next few seconds before finally calling the timeout. The body posture of both men was interesting. I was wondering if anyone would try and anylyze that situation and the leadership dynamics.

Saw that too. Richt knew a TO needed to be called but was asking Grantham basically when he wanted it because Grantham could better tell, by UT’s previous offensive play calls, how fast they were getting to the ball, getting their play called, and getting the play off. He deferred to Grantham to tell him when to call the TO (a few seconds before they snapped it) which was the smart thing to do…plus it worked.

Makes sense, except, what I think I saw was Grantham grabbing Richts hands and shrugging him off…and then Richts unsure and insecure demeanor. I didn’t like the way it looked on national t.v. I like Grantham and I like Richt…just didn’t like the way it looked.

No dude, go back and re-watch it. There was going to be a time out call, he just wanted TG to let him know right before the snap call. It messes with the O’s mind a little bit more, plus it gives TG a chance to look at the Offense setup, now he may have moved CMR out of the way so he could look at the offensive setup. But no, they wanted and needed a TO there.

I opine that you are correct. TG was trying to see the setup and CMR had the timeout signal in his face. TG moved CMR’s hand so that he could render an opinion.

We should stop worrying about what the rest of the country thinks because they are competing with us for NC.

I believe that look was, “Oooookaayyy…let me know when.”

Re the CMR/CTG thing…saw it here and commented to my friend that that was not a good thing…subordinate shoving superior, etc…general opionion of group was CTG didnt note who he was shoving..just wanted to have clear line of vision to the field…CMR appeared to understand and stepped forward in next few seconds. No big deal!

Small sample size, but red zone td defense is an excellent 1 out of 3 the past four games. Opposition has been scoring td’s at a clip of 75% in red zone chances the past several years, including the first 2 games of the season as well.
