The ring’s the thing.

If Spurrier had ever suggested something like this during his Gainesville days, he’d have been laughed out of town.

USC Head Football Coach Steve Spurrier said his team will receive rings if his team wins its upcoming bowl game.

Spurrier made that announcement on his radio call-in show Wednesday night.

A win would give USC its 11th win of the season, the most in school history, and Spurrier said the rings would be a way to honor that historic accomplishment.

The over/under on how soon the first one of these collector’s items hits eBay?  Four years, tops.

Since we originated the whole hawk your ring on ebay genre I will refrain from hazarding a guess, but I agree it will probably be soon.

Didn’t Georgia Tech do something similar to this? 😉 …. and how did that work out? False Juice just ain’t gonna get it done.

Actually, Spurrier DID do something similar to this in 1990. Even though Spurrier’s team that year posted the best record in the SEC, they were not allowed to claim the conference championship due to the malfeasance of his predecessors. He was very vocally bitter about that, so he had rings made up commemorating that event. The rings said some like “1990, Best In the SEC.” That said, that did not rise to the level of cheesy of this latest move.

As an aside, Jimbo Fisher was mocked for doing something similar last year. After his inaugural 10-4 season, he had rings made up that had FSU’s scores against Florida and Miami. I found that to be almost as cheesy as the 1997 UGA video made commemorating Georiga’s first win against Florida after 7 consecutive losses.

Doesn’t your stadium memorialize that ’90 “championship” as well, Mike?

Used to. Not any more. Florida has won so many other championships, the walls were getting too crowded.

          Oooooo…what you diiiidd, Mike.

You gonna memmorialize the upcoming game against Meyer, Mike?
By the way, you can officially use the epithets Crier, Liar, Hire( that one’s tricky unless you use his first name literally), Pyre(even trickier), Sire (used in pig porking when you take walks down pig trails in So Ga), Tire (as in the song , “I’m Tired” sung by Madeline Kahn in “Blazing Saddles”),or ‘Zire (as in D-Zire or lack thereof after the kick in the ass from Bama).

Stranger, I have a reply to yesterday’s question about a phrase for the upcoming game. Posted it tomorrow, but will repeat it today:

Let’s flush them down the “LS Lieux”.

I’ll explain this tomorrow which it already is , but I’m posting it today with tomorrow’s date. OK?

I don’t have a problem with the 90 ring or the 04 AU rings. Those are cases where a championship was perhaps denied. Now rings to commemorate a season or wins is a bit much. But different than a video marketed to fans to make money.

Certainly will take the under on that…and I think more and more with his comments and such, the HBC will be golfing this time next year. I know it comes up every year, but he just seems to be going overboard with “how far we’ve come/how much the program has accomplished” type stuff it’s starting to look like legacy making.

How many bowl games has Spurrier won at Carolina? this might be a non -issue.

We handed out Capital One Bowl rings at G-Day after the 2004 season.

At least Spurrier isn’t putting the Clemson score on it (looking at you, Tech).

This is kind of like getting a class ring in high school. It’s cool, until you get out in the real world, then it’s just embarrassing. Those guys will be more than happy to sell those rings the minute they walk off campus..even before they walk off campus if they ever win a real championship.
