The most recent poll for the Texas Senate race reveals Craig James with a whopping support figure of 4 percent. The succinct explanation?
The former SMU Mustang and New England Patriot running back is struggling to overcome two liabilities: he’s largely unknown and he’s unpopular among those who know him.
That’ll pretty much do it. The question is whether any of this registers at the WWL after James’ political ship inevitably sinks.
He’s largely unknown, and he’s unpopular among those who know him.
Craig, you’ve lost your inner pirate!

There may not be five people in AMERICA who would vote for James (outside his family. Maybe).

does that mean he’ll have to give back the Trans Am?

No. That insignificant collector’s item was donated by Craig to the Smokey and the Bandit Museum where it remained until taken by Burt Reynolds’ creditors.

Unknown and unpopular. What a perfecta for a politician. It’s like small but slow.

And that isn’t a bad scouting report on James’ football profile. Never understood (or much cared) how he slogged along in New England for those years.

“Among fans of his alma mater, SMU, he is liked by 23 percent and disliked by 29 percent.”
Disliked by 29 percent of the fans of SMU!! Brilliant.

New campaign slogan: “Craig James: Over 70 percent of his fellow alumni don’t dislike him.” Catchy.

No, it will not register with the WWL. I swear that place has got to be run by some secret sportscaster union.
Its the only explanation. The pool of talented announcers, whether they played football or coached or neither, who can at the very least read a teleprompter (which is clearly all ESPN requires), is immense; almost infinite. Yet there is almost never any turnover among those guys, even though they are not only completely expendable, but several are nearly unanimously hated by the viewers.
It just doesn’t make sense. They clearly believe, honestly believe, that we watch for the announcers as much as the games, yet the ones we hate still have jobs.
It can only be the work of the “Dipshit Former Football Players and Coaches Local 105”

I thought football was popular in Texas and would think that more people would at least know who he is
Perhaps this “football is a religion in Texas” meme is really just a myth?

I can assure you it’s not a myth. It was hard to wrap my head around it coming from Georgia, but in Texas they worship high school and pro football. College? Not so much. Sure, everyone is a fan of some college team but they don’t take it nearly as seriously as high school or pro. It also doesn’t help that these days a lot of folks in Dallas aren’t even completely aware that SMU still has a football team. It also doesn’t help that James spent his entire college career in Eric Dickerson’s shadow. And finally, it really doesn’t help that a lot of people who are acquainted with Craig James sorta think he’s a douche bag.

Dante – my tongue was firmly planted in cheek. I know how serious Texans are about their football. Texas football fans – especially those who are of voting age know who Craig James is. Hell he was featured in the 2011 edition of their high school football bible – Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.
But the dude is universally disliked because of his “non-role” in the SMU death penalty scandal (despite the fact that his agent was the booster in control of the slush), he is/was a terrible football analyst whose pomposity is only overshadowed by his inability to actually provide correct analysis of football, and the fact that he Swift boated the former coach of Texas Tech in an effort to get his son more playing time.
All of the voters know who James is. The voters who said they don’t like him were just being honest. The voters who said they don’t know who he is were just being polite, because they do not like him either. They just know if violates their very core as Texans to go negative on anything about football.
