THIS. It’s not unusual to have a little cell trouble in a stadium (Sanford’s not awful, but it could be better), but anywhere within two miles of the stadium area on gameday this year was a complete blackout. We’re talking five hours before the game, I couldn’t get a signal at our tailgate. Inside the place? Forget it. So much for Jacksonville being a major American city. You get better service in the cow pastures of Auburn.

I would love to see this happen in EVERY large venue – for games, concerts, what have you…but I sooooooo dred looking around to see EVERYTHING covered in a Verizon logo or whatever sponsor like a pro game or venue. I’m afraid this could usher that in even quicker. Have to take the good with the bad maybe?

Why stop with the phone service? Put in a bunch of N++++++++ wireless routers. And get rid of the head banging piped in music.

I’d love for Sanford Stadium to do this. The only thing I do on my phone during games is try to get scores from other games, the stadium scoreboard doesn’t seem to update very often.

Why do we even have a scoreboard? We rarely show replays of the close, controversial calls. We don’t put current scores up there. What is the point?

Actually I use that game to determine if I am ok to keep drinking. If I cannot find Uga then time to stop with the Beam.

SEC rules dictate that the scoreboard can only show a replay once. It’s not our scoreboard operators fault.

But the problem is that they don’t even show it once for a lot of the borderline calls because they don’t want the crowd to get pissed.
And we’re not necessarily blaming the scoreboard operator – the directive for this could easily be coming down from higher up.

+ infinity. While enjoy not having to listen to people talk on their phones at the stadium, it would be nice to be able to send a text message, email, or check scores, etc.

Okay I agree with you and KornDawg up there, but distinguish your data issues from cell service issues. You want to be pulling 3G metered data all game long? We want wifi!

Yeah, I’d rather they put in WiFi than improve cell service. We already have to hear enough socialites talking non-stop about everything other than football. Improving cell service would make it worse.

not going to reveal where my information is from….but there is a system design in place for both the stadium and campus…and the board of regents has been sitting on it forever. so maybe forward this to them instead 🙂
If you want to research more about it, these are called DAS systems. They are being put everywhere from stadiums to hotels to airports. way cool new technology

You shove an extra 100,000 people on campus and the system is going to be maxed out. But inside Sanford Stadium is a different story. Between the 2010 and the 2011 footballs seasons a DAS was installed and the coverage inside the stadium improved greatly. I had little to none connectivity issues inside the stadium this past season.

Ah, bringing back the memory of being on call for the first and only time at the vet school while attending a game–the pager did not page through for a while, and there was an emergency dog surgery. Oops. The vets were waiting to get at their surgery trays. Not sure if the dog lived. Had to beg and plead my way back into the game vs. Auburn. Decided that missing UGA football games was not the way to spend my college time after that.
