Georgia wide receiver Sanford Seay is expected to be dismissed from the team this morning, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.
Seay is accused of stealing money from another student in a university dorm room. It is believed that criminal charges will not be filed in the case.
Atlanta Fox 5 is also reporting that cornerback Nick Marshall will also be dismissed for the incident.
If a theft falls and no one gets charged with a crime, does it make a Fulmer Cup score?
********************************************************************************
UPDATE: And then there were three.
Cornerback Nick Marshall, cornerback Chris Sanders and receiver Sanford Seay have been dismissed from Georgia’s football team for violating team rules.
“It’s a privilege to play college football and to be a part of this team and University,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said in a university release. “Along with that privilege comes certain responsibilities. Mistakes were made and part of our job is helping them learn from mistakes. Going forward, we are committed to assisting them find opportunities where they can continue their education.”
So much for secondary depth this season.
For God’s sake… looks like every time Richt isn’t on the warpath against his players, they want to pull this kind of shit. Well, Richt, get back on the warpath. Scorch the earth. Kick these jerks off the team, and then kick off the guy who was sitting next to them in the team meeting just because you can.

Marshall had so much potential. That’s a real shame. Kid was athletic enough to get college attention for basketball and football – w/ opportunities to play QB (at tech), DB all over the place and even some Boykinish looks on O. Sad, sad sad.

Agree. Sad for both of them, but I was really looking forward to seeing what Marshall could do on the field.

Depth in the secondary takes a hit.
We are now net 16 players for the 2012 year. Hopefully we don’t go any lower. This is just one reason undersigning is irrational.

More importantly, we’re now net -3 DB’s for the year, with S. Dawson in and DGD Boykin + 3 dummies out.

Yeah, yeah, blah blah, “teenage kids don’t have great judgment” and all that, but seriously, this is beyond stupid even by 18-year-old standards. Whether charges were actually filed or not, if this is the most respect these assholes can show their own teammates, Richt should drop ’em off at the Clarke County jail personally.

I would draw a distinction b/w the Athens Hobo community and the Tent City residents. The Hobo’s are mostly college aged kids that come and go via the CSX yard at Homewood Village (I saw 2 girls this morning coming out of the gully towards Prince). They seem to be embracing an alternative lifestyle of wandering across the country.
Tent City (or Heidiville as I call it) appears to be home to the drug/alcohol addicts and mentally sick. The unofficial “Mayor” of Tent City was a married father of two living in Athens 20 years ago.

Strange that Tree was allowed to remain on the team when he was busted for the moped helmet theft incident. If I remember correctly charges were filed in that instance.
I do not condone stealing in anyway but I wonder why Richt is coming down so much harder in this case where charges were not filed?

For one thing, this incident evidently involves a teammate as the victim.

Which is why I feel the team is better off without Marshall (or Seay) than with him. Anyone who would steal from a teammate would probably cause more harm than good on a team.

IIRC, Tree’s “excuse” of mistaking the helmet for his based on similar look had at least some plausibility; after all, the “victim” didn’t report the “theft” for several months while Tree openly rode around campus wearing the helmet.
Different type of case to say the least.

ben,
I am not questioning the fact we see attrition every year. I just take exception to the implication our head coach has handled it like a dumbass. Who cares what this recruiting class looks like if we win the next five SEC championships? Bashing the coaches for the quality or quantity of a class that has yet to step foot on campus is just bashing for the sake of bashing.

Young men who play college football like many in society fail to see, to understand, and to seize opportunity when it is there for them. Unfortunately they make poor decisions that have long term impacts on their life. In most cases they lack inner discipline and motivation. College football is very demanding…you have to commit to the workouts, practice, field, study hall, and …keep your head in a book of study. Amazed how these guys do not see what a treasure sits there right in front of them at the University. Why steal, when there are people there who will go out of their way to help these guys.
It is a shame this happens at UGA or any other campus and program. Do not think there is a more committed man and coach than CMR to the development of each player on the football team, his staff, and the University at large. The man is unrelenting it making people better.
That means there are two more scholarships available. And as I have said before. Legions wait outside the gate to stand in the gap of the wall. Go find them CMR.

I’m going to go ahead and say it even if it’s unpopular: this is why you don’t undersign. You’re going to have attrition almost every year it just happens. You need a full or more than full class of recruits to backfill that space. in addition awarding a scholly to a walk on that doesn’t have a scholarship offer from a comparative school is a waste of a scholarship you could have had a recruit use that space. As an example use this year: Bama signs 27 guys we sign 19 assume equal talent levels. for these 2 classes to even out Bama would have to have 8 (27-19) guys contribute nothing and all 19 of our guys pan out.compound this over several years and add in the fact that Bama will let go of its underperformers and replace them with new blood and can you see how it would be almost impossible for UGA to keep up in the long term if we keep undersigning? Assuming attrition is equal UGA has to be that much better than say Bama at recruiting, identifying, and deploying talent just to stay even.

You’re right about the advantage that Alabama gains from his signing philosophy. But they can keep it. That’s not how I want UGA to recruit.

Forget oversigning for a minute. Can’t we just sign the amount that we had spots for? I’ll call this just “signing” (not over, not under). Going into Wednesday, we had 19 spots open. We could have signed up to 22 but chose to sign only 16. We left 3 spots open.
On top of that, we have spots being taken up by former walk-ons who were given scholarships last year when spots opened up and are getting to keep those scholarships for another year.

I apologize for my overuse of the word “spots” there but hopefully you get my drift. We left 3 scholarships open on Wednesday and we already have 4 walk-ons getting to keep their scholarships for another year. Are we running a charity or a major college football program?
