Brrrrrrrrackets!

Pondering Mike Leach’s 64-team football playoff, Graham Watson dishes out a “just shoot me” thought:

Let’s just stop and think about this for a second. Work out in your mind the nation’s top 64 schools, including several from the nonautomatic qualifying conferences. This really isn’t much different from choosing teams for bowl games minus six schools. Would it have been fun to watch LSU play UCLA in a first round game? Perhaps if you’re an LSU fan, but otherwise probably not. Upsets aren’t as common in football as they are in basketball so those early matchups might not be as attractive.

Still, it’s an intriguing prospect if for nothing else than excitement. March is one of the best times of the year for college athletics. Doing something similar in football would generate the same type of excitement.

Less upsets plus boring early matchups equals playoff fever.  Oy.

  2. As it is, the two weeks of bowl games generate a bit of excitement for college football nuts. If anything, a playoff would discourage that. It would drag on too long, and most people would completely lose interest. It takes three weeks to do the basketball tournament. Most viewers watch the 1st & 2nd rounds. Fewer watch the 3rd & 4th rounds. Only fans of the teams or college basketball nuts watch the final four and championship game. It would take twice as long to do a 64-team football tournament.

A plus-one adds one extra week. If it will stay at a plus-one, then go for it. Odds of it staying a plus-one are 1,000,000 to +1.

Can’t help but think of Trey’s accent when reading your posts. Please let me know when you are writing a post and I shouldn’t imagine the accent. 🙂

Dumber than dirt. Yeah, March Madness is great for 16 or so days. What about the period from mid November till March? Not so much. In fact, too long and too boring. Mike Leach needs to stick to coaching and leave playoff planning to others.

The first three rounds would be chalk, with one or two upsets. When you consider that people are going to expect the wins from Boise State, TCU, or even Fresno, you really don’t have many places to look for an “upset”.

If it were football, this year’s flaky, underachieving Florida basketball team would be ready to play the Chick-fil-A Bowl. As it is, due to upsets, seeding, etc., they get to play a 4 seed for the rights to the Final Four. Buh.
