Yeah, and that was at guard. Since Friend obviously thinks he can play Left Tackle, I’ll have to go back and watch the film from last year. From memory, I was concerned about Gates being too sluggish to play Guard (if he ever had any competition) much less Tackle, and surely not Left Tackle. Lee looked much better at guard than Gates, much quicker and faster.
So it’ll be interesting to look back and a lot more interesting to watch Gates and the others in the spring game (the anticipation of seeing Gates is almost over the top already). Hopefully, they won’t divide up the units because that makes the day worthless for the team and everybody else.
But even if they do, we can still watch the individual players.

What I read in that article is that we might actually have a legitimate 3-deep at LT. And we might need all 3 of them after we face Franklin’s knee-seeking missiles next year.

Also, a bonus of having such a strong d-line is we’ll answer similar questions about the o-line. Though I’m not sure I’m looking forward to the answers… Apparently we still have a long way to go on o-line.
On a positive note, Big John Jenkins has been a total force. I hope 2012 is the year he blows up.

I have nothing to go on but happy talk but we may discover in 2012 that Will Friend is significantly better than Stacy Searels. Just seems to be some of the sentiment I hear from player interviews. But we’ll find out soon enough if there’s any validity to those thoughts

I just hope these guys brutalize each other in practice (without injuring each other of course). That way, when Gates lines up across someone of some prowess, he can think “yeah, but I got you chump. You’re a poor man’s Jarvis Jones!” and vice versa. That’s how you get better; you face the best day in and day out. I hope grantham does his best to confuse the new Center as well. Try to make him dizzy, becuase he will only get better for it. This is the time for it, right? Spring Ball is a time for trying somethings out and seeing who, and what, fits.

“Hey 73, don’t think I don’t recognize you, you poo-butt motherf***er! Hey pay attention when I’m talking to you, ni***! You’re the guy who shot my mother aren’t you? You were trying to steal her car, you c***sucker. You didn’t think I was going to find you ni***, but I got you now, ni***. I’m gonna bust your gut open and watch you die!”

The good thing is we won’t be facing any teams with players on the level of Jarvis Jones. The only opponent with anyone close might be scu and clowney. And clowney has a long way to go before he’s on par with Jarvis.

I heard this same line of thinking when Pollack was blowing up our OL and all we could think was how great that news was about our defense. Once the season started we found out it was more about how bad our OL was than how good DP was. Not that David wasn’t talented, but apparently everyone had a DE that could blow our OL up.
To be honest, we have been much better at pass blocking than run blocking the last 10 years. It is the lack of holes to run through, or the ability to push back the other guys enough to make 1/2 yard consistently in short yardage situations that has hurt us the most.

Our OL improved with the departure of Bean. Watch any of the games and he is out of position or he commits a false start at least once per game. He could not move fast enough to even bump most of the good DE’s we faced. If he gets drafted it will be as guard and he will be a big project for the team that gets him.

Unfortunately, the other part of that thinking is that Bean was the best of most of the players playing OL this year. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been in there.
I hate myself for those thoughts.

Exactly, if Bean was so bad, it doesn’t speak highly of the guys behind in him that couldn’t take the job from Bean. Hopefully the OL has improved and/or Theus is as good as advertised.

O-line issues are particularly difficult to fix overnight, which is probably one reason why our o-line has been such a persistent weakness.

I was looking at a recent depth chart of the OL and I think we are better off than we thank. Everyone with playing experince from last year should be better, if we can get another starter from last years Redshirts(Dantzler?) and if Theus is 80% of the hype I think we’ll be ok. IMHO, CB and Safety worry me more than OL.

Which safety are you worried about? The all-American or Williams, the senior who can play 4 different spots?

He probably meant depth, which does get kind of scary after our starters.
Also, looking at next season, our secondary is going to get a lot younger in a hurry.

I have no issues with our starters, next year after attrition for NFL and graduation we get really thin. And we currently have a walkon inour two deep. Hopefully that will change before the season, but right now I think its clearly our weakest postion depthwise.

All I know is I was speaking with a friend of mine who’s a graduate assistant on the defense the other night: apparently our O-line has quite a ways to go to be ready for the season, however he did admit that he honestly believes our defense to be the best in the nation, so he’s cutting the O-line a little slack…

Listen, this defense will be one of the best in the nation next year, barring injuries. While there has been tremendous talk, deserved for Jarvis, and mentions of Cornelius being back, I think the one who will shine the most next year is Tree. If the secondary is firm, our front seven are going to wreak havoc on ANYONE!! Look at the improvement from year 1 of Coach Grantham to year 2, and now they all have more knowledge which means more speed. We are going to whip some butt next year!

Alec looks the part on the field. He is a beast. I love watching him play and with him and JJ on the field together…it’s almost unfair.
