Mark Richt has lost control of the hot seat meme.

SI.com‘s Holly Anderson was gracious enough to include me in a blogger round-up of coaches on the hot seat going into the season – no, not because Richt’s on one today, but to answer a question about why much of the Atlanta media seems to have a hard-on about bad boyz in Athens.  (And, okay, because it was a good excuse to trot out everybody’s current fave Richt meme.  See post header.)

I’m happy my whole answer made it in there, except for a cheap shot I took at AJ-C blog commenters.  Anyway, let me know what you think about my response.  It’s pretty timely in light of yesterday’s post about Chuck Oliver, no?

    Senator,
Timely and spot on as always. Too bad you couldn’t name names.

This is a good time for me to remind all The Senator’s loyal readers to click on one or two of the ads on GTP today. In case you don’t already know it, The Senator gets a fraction (a very small fraction) of a penny from World Press every time someone clicks on one of the ads from his site. If 100 of us loyal readers click on two of his ads a day, by the end of the month it might end up being enough money to buy The Senator a Knob Creek on the rocks at a posh suburban Atlanta watering hole.

Think of all the time the Senator puts into his blog and think about how much you and I depend on it. Help me buy the Senator a nice sip of bourbon. Click an ad right now and then do it again tomorrow.

Now back to your discussion about college football and the clowns at the AJ-C…….

I didn’t see any cheap shots – I think the AJC writers have made their beds, and you gave the beat writers a pass, which is fair, because they are generally not mean-spirited, just mediocre.

I particularly liked “…low expectations that Dooley relies on for a pass” – oof. And you pointed out the CMR himself does a poor job in defense of himself and the way he runs his program.

As excellent a short analysis as you could ask for.

    • The cheap shot I was referring to was about the AJ-C’s blog commenters:

Depth isn’t as valuable as laying out bait – a quick glance at your typical Atlanta Journal-Constitution message thread reveals Mencken’s line about never going broke underestimating the intelligence of the average American is alive and well there – so a superficial wag of the finger in Athens’ direction is often all it takes for a good day’s work.

Yep, I detest cheap shots also, until I cave and use them. While I have considered all of mine as solid cheap shots, yours doesn’t come close. How else can one honestly express how they (AJC writers) appear to work? Appreciating your professional ethics though, I can see the reason for the soft flagellation you attempt to apply to yourself herein (notice how I picked up on the word craft “soft bigotry” that you used).

I was surprised by your answer, but certainly think it has been well earned for several years since the AJC continues to let that bunch drag them lower. “Laziness” is a perfect word to encompass what they do collectively.

A Dawg’s “pat, pat” on the head for Mencken’s thought is certainly apropos here.

My compliments to HVL for reminding us, as requested. Please continue to do so.

Yes, Senator, that was well-written snarkification, but it is so typical on GTP maybe we did not clap loud enough.

was traveling yesterday and missed my Chuck “The King” Oliver opportunity – so at least let me say that Chuck Oliver is to intelligent football commentary what shards of glass mixed with antifreeze is to mouthwash.

I have to admit, I like Holly’s nickname for Coach Richt: the Ol’ Dirty Pastor. It’s kind of a blend of Evll Richt and Saint Mark. Well played, Holly.

I always appreciate your turn of phrase:

…soft bigotry of low expectations that Dooley relies on for a pass.

    That’s quality right there.

A very knowledgeable English teacher that I know once said, and I’m paraphrasing here, that the key to good writing is to write in a clear and concise manner, without too much flair, but with a heart, passion, and intellect that lets the reader know that you know exactly what you’re talking about and that he knows exactly what you’re talking about. And Senator–that’s basically what you do. As a writer and a Dawg fan, I sure do appreciate the shit out it!

    Or….what Rebar said.

Kudos to BigEZ for the Seinfield reference. I felt the same way.
