The race is on.

Kentucky AD announces the firing of Joker Phillips, effective season’s end, in an open letter.

If Kentucky decides to chase somebody like Bobby Petrino, can places like Auburn and Tennessee afford to wait?

Feel bad for Joker. Seems like a decent guy with no chance at a basketball school. If they hire Petrino it will generate an awful smell out of Lexington. Of course, if they don’t Auburn will. Hear they are in the “covet” column.

Well said, timphd. Joker seems to be a class act, and I hope this hasn’t hampered his career. I dont know how good of a coach he really is, but it’s probably not fair to evaluate him by the work he did at Kentucky.

As for Petrino, can Kentucky really get into a bidding war and win? I have to say Auburn would definitely fire Chizik, but he should probably get one more year. I really don’t see UT going there, even if Dooley is let go. This will be fun to watch.

Poor Mark Richt. A few weeks ago, right here at GTP, it was “obvious” he should be fired. But he’s not even in the conversation for the KY job? Turrible.

But I’m looking forward to getting Dan Mullen here at UGA. He’s done a great job this year at MSU, winning both the big games against…wait, what? Hey, where are those guys that were calling for Richts’ head anyway?

Petrino will not be hired by AUB or TENN. Or KENT. His SEC days are over. I know you have to fill space at times, but this Petrino obsession is a bit scary.

I wouldn’t rule out Petrino getting a gig in the SEC so fast.

I believe you are right about that and I would include the entire southeast region. Coaches on the recruiting trail will make sure every mama who hasn’t heard about Bobbys failings know what he is before they leave. I could see Petrino at Colorado or some place west of the Great Plains.

JCB, totally agree. No way a respectable major program would hire him regardless of his coaching ability. Think of the grief a university president would get from the faculty. I don’t see it. Petrino will have to find the football equivalent of UNLV hiring Jerry Tarkanian.

Heck, Mike Leach’s alleged sins pale in comparison and he had to wait two years to get a job offer from lowly WSU. Mike Price’s scandal also pales in comparison and he sat out two years before getting an offer from UTEP of the WAC and now in Conf. USA.

“No way a respectable major program would hire him regardless of his coaching ability. ” So he goes to Auburn in 2014?

          • You guys are all wrong. Auburn and Tennessee will court some successful HC, OC or DC. Pinocchio is toast, especially in the SEC. Who cares what KU does?

Maybe so…. but the last two head coaches the Hillbillies and Barners hired weren’t exactly tearing it up at their previous posts were they?

              • No, but it seemed they had potential. I do think that we will be surprised what happens with Auburn. Tennessee, hell I don’t know. I do like looking at SOD. My Daughter and I have made him our pet coach. He’s just so precious.

Potential for what? Both were floundering in mediocrity, or worse. SOD was n’t being pursued by any program that I am aware of, and Cheetzik was in danger of being fired for his lousy performance, even Iowa State didn’t think he was good enough for them. Just two hasty decisions that backfired on the ADs who rushed to judgement. There was much better talent out there, imo. Both of those programs had better choices, and the money to go get them.

                • Why do you think they chose them? Potential is they only hope they had.
                  It just did not happen.

I have no idea what they were thinking but I am confident as an AD neither of them would have gotten more than a 30 second look from me. The obvious reasons are Cheetzik’s tie to AU and Dooley’s ties to Saban, neither of which would have been a big asset to me as a decision maker.

I don’t know. I see your point, but given the history at CU, that’s probably not the place. (I’m thinking of Gary Barnett’s comments re: female kicker + recruiting history under McCartney).

with Charlie Srong doing well at Louisville-The Kentucky gig is a tough one–I also feel for Joker as he does seem to be a class guy–he will land on his feet and make way more money than I do–We are so fortunate to have CMR !

Barnhart will not hire Petrino. UK likes retreads as football coaches. Fulmer or Zook would be my bet.

Would that make him the Great Blueberry? Or something to do with Violet Beauregard from Willy Wonka?

Not sure I can see Fulmer winding up there. Joker had a couple ex-UT guys (Randy Sanders for one) there already. Not sure it’d excite all two dozen UK football fans.

  8. I have never gotten the love affair (pun intended) with Petrino by some in the media. He hasn’t won a big game and has never appreciated defensive football. Great offensive mind? Absolutely. Good leader for a program? No way.

It’s political at Auburn.. somebody loves that guy there. UT.. they’ll take anything positive they can get, but again, i don’t see them taking Petrino after the Kiffin debacle…they want to minimize the risk. UK? when you’re consistently at the bottom of the SEC in football.. you can probably live with a certain lack of moral fiber.. particuarly if it’s already after the shoe has dropped and they can get him saying he’s reformed.

UK ought to rehire Rich Brooks out of retirement ala Bill Snyder from Kansas St. You know he would relate really well to the recruits great-grandfathers.

I’d take Bill Curry before I’d even consider Petrino.

Legend…there’s some pointed irony behind the comment about Curry.
Bobby Dodd and Bill Curry are men that deserve some respect…I can’t bring myself to hate them. IF I have my history correct (and it’s doubtful that I do), Bill Curry was hired away from GT by Alabama after Bear Bryant quit…He won at Bama, but lost to Auburn and almost literally got run off. I THINK he then landed at Kentucky, where he had mixed results. Point…very successful at GT and Bama, but not so much at KY…..
I could have researched this very easliy to be sure, but I’m very lazy to be sure.

Am guessing, but Chris Hatcher to UK. Short trip from Murray State and he was there as the QB coach. Chris was the guy who first hired Muschamp and Smart.

Heard this name bandied about as well. Perhaps the record at Murray St. proves a problem? Can scoring a lot overcome winning/losing?
