Envy and jealousy: “Don’t talk Norwegian, talk American.”

If you’re a Notre Dame hata, then this Charlie Pierce piece is right up your alley.  It’s all enjoyable, but here’s a tasty sample:

… And, last, but most important of all — good god, can they be insufferable. They’re like sacramentalized Yankees fans. I have to say, I really enjoyed that 12-year stretch from 1995 to 2007 when they lost nine bowl games in a row, and when the average margin of defeat in those games was north of 17 points.

Yeah, baby.

Bonus points for the Rudy bashing (“a passel of unreconstructed mythopoeic bullpucky”).  I can’t stand that flick.  Or the real-life Rudy, for that matter.

Mea culpa: I love “Rudy”. I find the actual Rudy to be pretty insufferable from what I’ve read and from seeing him speak in person. But man, I do love that flick. I hate Notre Dame, but for some reason I can watch the movie without my Notre Dame entering the equation.

Besides, Georgia Tech gets beaten at the end. What could be better than that?

I can’t hate on Notre Dame. I find Rudy insufferable and many of their ‘fans’ are just awful. However, there is something very special about gameday in South Bend. I went to the ND v. Ohio State game in 1996 at the apex of Ron Powlus glory…and still am in awe of the whole experience. The atmosphere, the weather…the way the leaves on the trees in early autumn reflected off the St. Joeseph’s River. Anyway, as obnoxious as their fan base can be…it’s hard for me to knock Notre Dame. (Ohio State…well, that’s an entirely different matter all together…having no expirience with gameday at Nebraska…I can tell you that in the Midwest/Big 10 the three best places to go for a game are Madison, South Bend, and Ann Arbor while the worst place is Columbus…just awful)

Also, Rudy allowed Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn to meet…and I’m pretty sure the world (at least of movies) is a better place thanks to that.

The best possible scenario: ND manages to go undefeated, K-State and Oregon lose and UGA beats Bama in the SECCG. Then UGA plays a paper tiger ND in the BCSNCG, UGA wins the BCS National Championship and pisses on ND by 40 in doing so. All would be right with the world!!!!

All of my in-laws are ND fans. It irks me to no end that my FIL is constantly harping that ND is “the only team that doesn’t cheat”. You cannot imagine how it would make my day/year/lifetime for UGA to pound them.

I’m a UGA and Notre Dame alum but I’m a Georgia native so the Dogs come first. Folks at Notre Dame, like Yankee fans, don’t mind the hate/envy, it comes with the territory so they expect it. But if you hate Notre Dame, don’t talk with your mouth full. Their tradition and history is really what made college football a national sport and none other than our own Harry Mehre (Butts-Mehre Building) was an assistant coach under Rockne at Notre Dame. So, go Dogs but give a little due to ND, the game wouldn’t be where it is today without their history. And if you ever get a chance, visit the campus and their football museum/heritage center, many of the greats of college and pro football are there and I consider myself to have the perfect pedigree from Georgia and Notre Dame, the two best programs in college ball.

Prima Donnas, even institutional ones, are easy to hate.
I usually take the easy route.
