… There was heavy chatter about the absence of Paul Finebaum, the popular Birmingham radio host whose contract recently expired, making him a free agent. The consensus is that Finebaum will play an important role as a personality on the SEC Network.
The worst part is the realization that I’ll be paying for that with an increase in my cable bill.
I guess their first 9 choices weren’t available.

This is a revolting development. How serious a venture can the SEC Network really be if this clown has any part in it?

If Paul does play an important role as a personality on the SEC Network will he bring his borderline personalities with him? If so, how can he do that in addition to writing an autobiography of an Alabama fan

Obviously, we are dealing in speculation. Personally, I have a hard time believing the SEC wants ANY association with this guy. in as much as he provides a forum for the passions of the crazies, do you really think Slive thinks Finebaum is “accretive” to SEC viewership? Put differently, is there a single member of his legions that don’t already watch SEC football FERVENTLY???? The answer is obviously not. His show is basically a version of the old Geraldo, Maury Povich, or even Mort Downey junior….its circus radio. I have a hard time believing that Slive wants to associate with that non-sense

Finebaum is frequently seen on ESPN during the fall, so I absolutely believe that ESPN would want him on their SEC network.

The guy is a box of rocks with lips. Ridiculous way to portray the SEC to the rest of the country.

Honey Boo Boo has a show. The stupid redneck southerner meme sells. Just like Jershey Shore. Or The Hills. The worst of the worst get airtime now because we watch.

You make a good point PD. ESPN is part of a much larger TV intelligentsia that seems to want to portray the South (and other parts of the nation, too, to be fair) in the most negative light possible. Honey Boo Boo is an excellent example.

The list goes on. Our society flocks to the extreme now. Most of what’s on tv is garbage. Finebaum would fit right in. I think it all started when they let that damn Yankee, Rhett Butler, say “damn” on the silver screen.

Not surprising at all. Remember this is an ESPN production and much has been written about the decline of journalistic standards over the last few years in favor of “Embrace Debate” programming.
Like or not, the Skip Bayless anti-hero act has translated into higher ratings and viewership while PTI has influenced sports programming from a format/visual identity perspective across all networks.
Finebaum fits in perfectly as the SEC’s network Skip Bayless.

Two of my Georgia-born friends are Rhett Butlers. Can’t you just see the horde of kids in future Ala whose last names are preceeded by “Paul Finebaum” ?
