Now I doubt they’re talking about running the wishbone because of the risk of subjecting Aaron Murray to an unnecessary pounding – although the thought of pulling that against Georgia Tech even for one play is amusing as hell – but there are still plenty of alternatives, from the Wildcat (note Richt said nothing there about leaving the QB in such a set) to some of the crazy stuff Dana Holgorsen’s known for that would be tantalizing.
If nothing else, that just gave Clemson’s defensive coordinator something else to think about.

They are probably leaving them out there to get the defense to pick its poison: stay in base and be prepared to defend the run or go to five db’s to avoid a mismatch. If a team stays in base you are going to force a lb to cover when Marshall flanks out. If they go to 5 DBs you have 6 blocking 6. It seems pretty simple but it doesn’t work if your back isn’t a receiving threat. Not many are. Hit Marshall on a few deep balls and you’ll have something.

Although Marshall has had good and spectacular catches, don’t rule Gurley out. He can catch and run as well.

And if both RBs turn out to be above average pass-catchers, that really ups the ante on pressuring defenses. Against weaker Ds you could just run 2-3 packaged plays over and over with Murray deciding to run or pass after the snap.

My high school ran the power- I, with the wingback in and to the side of the fullback. The wingback was close enough to the QB to take a handoff on a dive play. Maybe Marshall will be the wingback.

This should bring the linebackers and corners in tighter and open up the middle for quick hits to the tight ends, or even the fullback coming over the middle on a playfake. When you’ve got this much talent, anything is doable at a high level.

Think Rome, running and catching on one side, leaving a well known 6′ 5″ Senior high and mighty on the other side. God, (almost left out the comma) Bobo’s DawgO Machine has so many dangerous facits that it is impossible to stop UGA from scoring. All anyone can do is try to slow down the inevitable.
Did we forget to mention O depth and the new cogs available?

Which could also be countered/exploited further by setting the WRs out with very wide splits (taking a page from Baylor’s playbook.)

My guess is Marshall in slot with ability to either run real routes and catch the ball like a WR (assuming his beautiful TD catch against Nebraska was not a fluke and indicative of reliable downfield pass catching ability) or run a spread style “jet sweep”. It seems to me that I wonder how similar he is to Harvin in his skills.
My two knocks on him (and I am being a bit picky here) were on a LOT of his runs he almost appears to be stumbling forward/off balance and that compared to Gurley he did not have the ability to grind tough yards between the tackles due to strength and quick cuts. Of course, when he get going, he has a unique ability to look like he is barely moving effort-wise yet he is FLAT OUT FLYING relative to the defenders who fall behind.
If we made a list of “break out” players who could radically alter our team, he might be number one. If he could demonstrate great ability to run between the tackles like Gurley, we become an even more dangerous team. My point being that in as much as our offense does not change with Marshall, we know our consistency running the ball did not…..

By now, Marshall should have watched enough film of “what could have been” had he stayed on his feet and ran through the initial contact on the los..When he gets in the secondary, wow! It’s so great! l…I look for him to come out a complete back…stronger and more determined. This whole thread is some hot porn!

Spread Marshall out. Send him in jet motion. Fake hand off, and give to Gurley in opposite direction.
As a defender, you would HAVE to respect both possibilities.

Gurley ran a ton of Wildcat in the Shrine Bowl. He knows how to run it. And if you watched highlights of that game, you got an inkling as to how good he could be.

Jeesh…just imagine Gurley getting to the corner with the option to pitch to a trailing Marshall….or pull-up on toss an easy one to Mitchell streaking down the sideline.
EA Sports will add this and call it the “Gurshall” set to avoid the “use and likeness” clause of the contract.

Interesting juxtaposition of this with the article below on Baylor’s spread formation. Both methodologies can “stress the defensive perimeter” and “isolate some part of the defense”, but they take quite different paths to get there.

I guess the needle pointing up was attractive and little Mikey showing up to help him pack was very thoughtful. The Sooners were a force the last couple of years with their rush D. Number 94 in the land. That is 14 spots lower than our rush D.

This sounds like a fun option, especially if we’re thinking about hitting either Gurley or Marshall in space with a pass and then letting them work. At the same time, I cringe just a little bit when Georgia talks about doing this kind of stuff because of all the times we’ve killed drives by suddenly getting cute when the “old man football” was getting the job done. Still, it’s tough to argue with having a lot of talented players on the field at one time.

Still no great accolades here about Bobo. Pitiful. It’s called entrenched subjective mentality. Some just can’t bring themselves to unscrew their constipated reasoning.
Bobo has created a great force with “UGA” stamped all over it and it was no friggin’ accident. Let’s be the first group to give him his recognized due. Each time we discuss small parts of his O, the wagometer goes wild. Now run the entire machine through your mind and view the coming season for what they bring for all of us.

Why not a nice little “diamond” formation? Murray in pistol, Gurley behind him, Marshall & fullback to his sides. Split 2 out wide to take away the corners, both run deep posts. If they keep both safeties deep, we’ve got 8 on 8 in the box–Marshall can outrun any LB, and Gurley can usually run through 1 or 2. If they bring a safety down for run support, we’ve got Mitchell or Bennett 1-on-1.
Or we just throw it to the fullback!
