One day several decades back, some longhaired Brits stepped off a plane in New York City. The rest is history.
Without any further ado, here are the Beatles first three appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show:
America sank to its knees in awe. And, yes, I remember when this happened. (My mom wouldn’t let me go see The Beatles when they came to Atlanta, damn it.) I am old.

I’ve been re listening to some of my old Beatles and “I saw her standing there” from “Please Please Me” was one of the best debut songs ever, right up there with “Good Times, Bad Times” from Led Zeppelin 1. And to think 2 years later they had “Tomorrow Never Knows”, 4 years later “Sgt. Peppers” and gone in 7. Amazing work and creativity.

It’s hard for people to appreciate how seminal a deal A Hard Day’s Night was. The album was the first by a major pop act that was entirely self-penned. And there’s no telling how many bands the movie inspired.

The movie holds up as well as the music. I introduced it to my kids a couple of years ago, when my daughter was only 8 or 9, and it became one of her favorites.

I suspect its an age differential….I heard, for instance, Please Mr. Postman at the Royal Peacock in Atlanta, which gave me a jaundiced view of copy bands.

Epstein was relentless in helping to get them on the map…and it paid off. But shortly after, a series of bad deals demonstrated that he was seriously in over his head business wise.

There is an art to cutting the flat top. My boys use to wear them when they played soccer. They played together and were quite serious about their look. When they were in HS they wanted long hair. My brother in law reprimanded me about it once. Said they were going to become undisciplined. I just laughed that off. When they got to college they wanted wore a buzz cut. I don’t get it?

Superb comments by WCobbDawg and Twistification! In the book Outliers there are a few pages devoted to them and the time this group spent in clubs building their craft. Remember listening to them in Reed Hall and looking down into Sanford Stadium. Love music and UGA!

I liked Harrison a lot too. Probably not for the same reasons as you though. He was incredibly talented and he could play complicated guitar cords/riffs. As a jr high and hs garage band musician he frustrated the hell out of me. An amazing talent stuck between John and Paul. Not enough of his writing got out. Leo Kottke was another favorite of mine. After watching him at the the Georgia Theater I put my guitar in its case and didn’t touch it for a month. There is talent and then there is genius and I was no genius.

Inspired me to take up guitar building as a hobby. I’ve built a dozen or so. I’m always surprised by the Athens musicians that own my hobby work. My sons were always keyboard players. Neither learned to play guitar. My Dad was a car guy while in the military. My oldest knows his way around older model cars. Summers spent with Grandpa.

I’m 26, and the Beatles have been my favorite band for years. I imagine there are still many out there like myself that appreciate the fact that they were and always will be the best.

Don’t worry Senator, my father was at the Beatles’ Atlanta show in ’65 and said it sucked and you couldn’t hear shit. He ended up being more of a Stones man anyway.

A few thoughts: During the War of 1812, the British burned down the US Capitol. The only battle the US won was after the war ended,,,, at New Orleans. I, too, was, and am, a Rolling Stones fan, but the Beatles body of work is unsurpassed in respect to the the incredible volume of work they produced in such a short time.
