I don’t know how Mike Ekeler’s gonna do on the field, but he just won the damn press conference. A few samples:
And this is the topper, by a wide margin.
Honestly, if it had been up to me, I would have hired him on the spot.
It’s hard not to get excited about the new staff, isn’t it?

UPDATE: Via Emerson –
He looks good in red, no?

UPDATE #2: I post this because I have to.
Here’s what Ekeler said he told head coach Mark Richt during his interview, after breaking down film of Georgia’s punt return unit:
“Coach, you set a record an NCAA record for being in punt safe.”
Richt, asked about that later, went into a long defense/analysis, but then confirmed that he laugh in response to Ekeler’s comment.
“I did chuckle, because I knew I did call punt safe a lot,” Richt said.
I’m in.

I like anyone that can tactfully tell the boss he’s doing it wrong. I’m all in.

Holy dawg porn. And another reason why I love Coach Richt – he can take constructive criticism.

You have such a dirty mind! 🙂

Any coach who can quote Chris Farley and then critique the guy who’s interviewing him at the same time is good to go in my book. Less punt safe! Our new credo?

Oh, you’re still allowed to run something other than punt safe?

Now if he can go fix our (lack of) pre-practice and pre-game stretching routine, I will be impressed!
No more worrying about all the non-contact injuries undermining our season…

NO, NO and NO. You NEVER do static stretches on a cold muscle. There isn’t a S&C coach in the country that could have prevented our rash of ACL’s this year (especially the non-contact ones). You can’t do any specific exercise that is going to strengthen ligaments.
We are on the right track by hiring coaches that are going to train movements and muscle chains and not focus exclusively on the isometric push/pull types of exercises. We also need to focus on our aerobic conditioning and anaerobic repeatability if we are going to keep up with the HUNH that just about everyone will be running next year.

Can he help with keeping the roster full? These guys should be anxious to get in the S&C, practice, and game with a coaching staff like this. If I failed to make a play or missed an assigment I’d be ashamed to go to the sidelines with this coaching staff … “Commitment”, hello LeAnne Rimes.

Seems like a good joe, sincere, and competitive. Liked his comments about CMR, too – seems to genuinely like his boss. Impossible to know from the outside looking in, but it feels like the staff has chemistry now, similar dispositions, etc. Very excited to see how this all shakes out…welcome CME!

He even wore my old number when I was a safety….grew into a linebacker a la some of our current guys. I like his spirit and look forward to his product line.
