Makin’ bank on the Plains

You win an SEC title and play in the BCS title game, you can expect some new loot to be flowing your way.  And it’s raining bucks at Auburn.  End result:  another SEC coordinator is making more than Mike Bobo.

Offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee received the biggest raise among the assistant coaches: An increase of $250,000 to $600,000 annually with a two-year contract extension to June 2017.

Where does that place Bobo now – middle of the pack in SEC offensive coordinator pay?  Hell, even Rodney Garner (three-year contract through June 2017, $550,000 annually) is making about as much as Bobo.

Malzahn’s staff earned $3,495,000 in salary last season not including bonuses, ranking fifth nationally and third in the SEC behind LSU ($4,565,803) and Alabama ($4,462,700), according to USA TODAY Sports. The same group will earn $4.32 million in 2014.

I hope the reserve fund sends Richt a Christmas card.

No need to hit the reserve fund, take $200K from McFrugal and give it to Bobo maybe greg will leave.

Nothing Auburn does or has is worthy of envy or respect.

Gotta grow the new med and engineering schools to make them competitive for research and drive the endowment up.

    Different financial priorities here.

I don’t know who is calling the shots but it’s going to take losing the guy to pay his successor market value.

I hope we have told him if he is patient there is a head coaching job in Athens waiting on him when Richt decides to retire

I am surprised he hasn’t already been hired away as HC by a lower tier D1 program

I will say he ain’t exactly the most articulate guy if you watch him interviewed. Sounds like he is from South Georgia and didn’t pay much attention in English class at UGA

He is married to Vince’s niece and due to her family, they aren’t hurting for $$.

But I am still amazed we don’t pay him more. Either by choice or requirement

Talked to a guy who had classes with him while on vacation last month. The guy said Bobo was dumb as a box of rocks. If that’s true, I’d hate to see our O if he WERE smart…

Your 2nd sentence answered your question. Some of the “best” coordinators like Strong and Muschamp have been hired by big time programs. But you said I am surprised he hasn’t been hired by lower tier. If he is a great coordinator and future head coach at UGA (in my opinion not a chance) then why would that be the case, why wouldn’t he be considered at the big times too? Because he is not a major head coach material. And has he been offered ever at the smaller ones?

        • He turned down an invite from Georgia Southern the last time there was a HC opening. He rejected an offer to become offensive coordinator at Virginia Tech. And that’s just in the last two years or so.

If you’ve let word out that you’re not really interested in moving, how many serious offers should you expect to get?

I agree. But Ga Southern is not a big time program and OC at VT is a lateral move. So yes he won’t get offered those jobs more often because they know he won’t take them. But too coordinators are usually offered big jobs like Muschamp and Strong have with TX and UF. I would say its because being a good OC which he is, is a different job than running a huge program. Different responsibilities, different qualifications and much more pressures. I don’t see that in him.

There’s a reason for Bobo’s contract being average. Just as there is a reason he has not been hired as an HC. My best guess is that McFrugal is not willing to open the checkbook because he nor a Richt believe Bobo will leave. Some people are satisfied with their current station in life. Whether it’s 600k, 200k or 700k, that’s an above average living.

Goodness if Mike Bobo wanted to leave to be an HC somewhere he would be gone. For goodness sakes SOD was the HC at uT. Are you kidding me? Mike Bobo doesn’t need any help. He is doing fine and no matter how some feel about the ” box of rocks” comment he is a millionaire coaching at his alma mater. And when he retires he will be fine… just fine.

Seriously? Sounding like you are from South Ga is something to be ashamed of? Lol. He’s from Thomas county. What should he sound like? It cracks me up when people act surprised that people from Georgia sound Southern. Another blessing bestowed upon us by Atlanta attracting so many transplants I guess. Who cares about being polished? He’s a football coach not a politician. Erk Russell didn’t talk like a music teacher from Manhattan and he sure wasn’t polished. Didn’t seem to be a hindrance to his coaching abilities.
