Count me officially in the fretters’ camp now. And my first worry is an overreaction on defense to what got blown up in Jacksonville.
Per defensive lineman Mike Thornton’s assessment, the SEC is “a copycat league,” so the Bulldogs should be expecting to see game plans similar to the one the Gators used to beat them in Jacksonville.
“They’ll definitely try and come out with some of the same things Florida did,” he said.
Thornton isn’t alone.
“If I was a coordinator, I know I would,” cornerback Damian Swann said.
Drew drools at “the challenge” of potentially being the attempted root of an opponent’s bullying. After all, it was the first time all season the run defense — led by the front seven — looked like the team’s weak point. So he doesn’t expect the trend to remain this week.
Johnson’s confidence matches Drew’s.
“We’re going to be prepared this week. We’re not playing,” Johnson said. “We’re dead serious. We’re going to be prepared if someone wants to run the ball. That’s all I’m going to say.”
Perhaps the team’s biggest concern will be avoiding over-correcting to make adjustments in the run game and losing sight of the gradual improvements in the pass game, as well.
Perhaps, indeed. I’m not gonna tell you that Kentucky’s passing game has been any great shakes this season, but it’s shown enough signs of life on occasion, like against Mississippi State, that Georgia’s defense ignores it at its peril.
And as a more general concern, speaking of UK’s game against the other Bulldogs, this makes me nervous, too.
High noon in Lexington….ominous. Don’t forsake me.

Now you’ve got our guys saying how they’re prepared and not playing if someone runs at them. Thanks guys, let’s keep motivating the other team to play tough.

I’ve watched Kentucky and Missy State twice. Kentucky looks more “footbally” than the last couple of years. Announcers’ (using that term loosely) efforts to convince me their big quarterback is the second coming of Ben Roethlisberger notwithstanding, what I see is that Kentucky gets after it pretty hard.
All in all I think this is more about us than about Kentucky. You never know whether a bad game is good or bad for a football team till the next game. We have more horses ( 🙂 ) than they do, but emotional delicacy in an opponent makes up for a lot deficiencies.
You are right to fret. Keep fretting my friends.

I’m surprised not to hear fear of his passing game. He is taller than anyone and has a clear vision of his receivers. The D line is going to have to jump often with busy hands trying to block his throws. He also can lean 5 yards after contact. He’s a load and here’s hoping our preparation is successful.

Kentucky will be mad-men. Georgia had better be more than ready and not be taken aback by the intensity of the crowd and players. Their QB is bia and very steady and throws a rope. He’s not intimidated at all. I was chastised by a few on here by predicting UF would give Georgia fits…Kentucky will also.
Kentucky is hungry and smells blood. Georgia better come out mean and fast and stay with it for the full 60 minutes. We’ll see, but I’m not optimistic.

Great link Paul. I really hope this stuff is fixable, and it looks like it may be. The push by the Gator O line still concerns me however, since it may be strength and not technique that caused it.
Curious to see how the Gators do moving forward and if they can beat any other teams like this running the ball all game. If they are exposed by South Carolina (a team not known for great defense at this point) than that really puts the what the f^&ck just happened in this game.

I was worried about this being a trap game a few weeks ago. Little did I know Florida was the trap game.
Kentucky doesn’t want to run it down your throat. They don’t have the horses for that. They move the ball by misdirection. They get after it on defense and special teams. Being overly aggressive could backfire. If Kentucky gets a few lucky breaks and stays in the game, does Georgia keep their composure? Who is the emotional leader that keeps everybody in the game when something bad happens?
Georgia should easily win this game, but a special teams snafu, a fumble, a few consecutive three-and-outs, and Kentucky could get up on Georgia. Before the Florida fiasco, I thought Georgia was tough enough mentally to come back and find a way to win the game. Now, I’m not so sure. I hope it doesn’t come to that.

Yeap. The D never had a leader last year and not really sure if they have one this year either. However, the O had Murray and it is clear Mason has not been able to replicate that leadership, mostly because mason cannot make things happen they way murray could.

I worry about all but the 2-3 cupcakes each year so I am “on alert” for problems this Saturday. This Kentucky team does look more “footballish” than any group they have had for some time. Being on the road, them needing to regain traction for their season and bowl, plus the confidence of seeing us go down so decisively to a team they played to a draw earlier makes this game more worrisome. That said, if our guys get back up off the deck and play like the East title means something we should be fine. I think we can cover the 10 points and win by 2+ TDs, but wouldn’t bet it because I don’t know the psyche of our team, nor the health of several key players. The QB being able to both throw and escape the rush is the major concern I have, but we should have good success on offense if we use our weapons better. Let’s hope the guys show up with fire in their eyes and don’t hang their heads about what cannot be undone.

South Carolina has been dead last in the SEC in scoring and rushing Defense. Below Vandy sports fans… numero 14. They have kind of sucked there all year. 3-4 growing pains. Remember those?
And before anyone panics Kentucky’s rushing D is next to last in the SEC at a stellar 13.
Georgia passing D has moved to #3 in the SEC and #19 in the nation. One thing at a time. Defense didn’t get broken overnight. Won’t get fixed overnight.

I’m still worried a bit about passing D (those numbers did get a boost from a team that didn’t need to pass to win vs. us), but you’re dead-on about UK’s rush D. And it’s even worse if you look at just SEC games. If Chubb and co. hold on to the ball, we should threaten 300 yds rushing.

Gilan looked suspicious. “An ax man? I don’t recommend trying to block an ax with two knives.”
But Will wouldn’t take no for an answer. “But what if he’s charging at me?” Horace walked over.
Gilan looked away. “Uh…shoot him.”
Horace intervened. “Can’t, his bowstring’s broken.”
Gilan gritted his teeth. “Run and hide.”
Will kept on him. “There’s a sheer cliff behind me.”
Horace caught on. “There’s a sheer cliff behind him, and his bowstring’s broken. What should he do?”

It will not be easy but we will beat Kentucky. Auburn will take nothing short of a miracle and they are usually the team that gets the advantage of miracles. If the defense that showed up in Jacksonville shows up to play Georgia Tech I can imagine them rushing for over 500 yards. We will just have to wait and see. I expect the back up QB’s to get in a couple of series against Charleston Southern but it will be late in the 4th.

Shifting gears here to a comment earlier about yards gained while falling forward, I don’t think I have ever seem so many back gain yards after we seem to have them under control, sometimes with 2-4 players involved. Immediate response is smaller, lighter players but this isn’t just with the DL guys, it is with LBs and DBs. Almost like we are either getting out-leveraged or trying too hard to strip the ball. Unusual, and frustrating. I get excited about a stop near the line and it turns into a 4-5 yard gain. Just me? Haven’t seen any comments on it, and this was all season, not just a whine about last week.
LikeLike
Macallan, I think you’re on to something there. I think we’re trying to stand the guy up to try to strip the ball. I want to see turnovers but, more importantly, see us get teams behind the chains, so we can unleash our pass rush. You can’t do that when you’re in 3 and manageable all day long.

Sorry, guys. I really don’t care that much about what happens the rest of the season at this moment, but I probably will at some point before the end of the year. It’ll be nice if they win the SEC by some miracle. As for the tackling, I’ve noticed it for several years now. I don’t know if it was something taught by the last defensive regime, but the linebackers often seem to try to catch the runner, so to speak, and end up allowing the back’s momentum to carry him for a couple of yards.

It occurred some in the past, especially with a good back in a one on one situation but it is the rule this year, not the exception, even when we have 2-3 tacklers involved. Many times I think it will be 2nd and 8-9 but ends up 2nd and five, or 3rd and short when it looks like it will be 3rd and 6. Looks very different to me but the old memory isn’t what it was. Also seems we are tackling higher which could be a contributing factor near the LOS.

Regardless of what happens the rest of this year we won’t get over it until the off season. At that point we’ll start to believe again. Until next year’s totally inexplicable loss. Or two. At which point we’ll all be back here reciting some variation on everything we’ve been saying this week. Which, I think, is the point Biggus Rickus was trying to make earlier. This type of loss has occurred with regularity for quite a few years now. When do we give up believing that it won’t happen again? Perhaps now? To be honest, in the harsh light of day, it’s getting hard to deny we’ve become the Clemson of the SEC. We always lose one or two that simply defy explanation.

It is college football, man, inexplicable wins and losses are as much a part of the landscape as beer, cheerleaders and idiots on TV who try to act like they actually know something about this week’s flavor.

What I saw was ILB R. Wilson on the sideline for almost the entire 2nd Half and Georgia DBs bouncing off UF rushers on nearly every long run.

Sorry. Went to home group and went to sleep. I’m old. I was around for the Erk years. I’m an Alumni, season ticket holder and the Hartman Fund has tens of thousands of my voluntary contributions. And Paul is my real name. So yes, I remember and yes I’ve watched enough college football to understand inexplicable losses happen. The regularity I’m talking about are the past seven seasons of the Mark Richt era, a man I love by the way. We have one or two games each year that aren’t simply bad losses. They aren’t simply a matter of us getting beaten. It’s us failing to even show up. It’s us not being ready for a rivalry game like Florida when we control our own destiny. It’s us seeming shocked, shocked that we can’t just mail it in. It happens a few times and I figure, it’s okay, we’ll learn from these experiences. But these losses keep happening and we keep not learning. And our players and coaches keep saying the same things over and over. That’s what I’m frustrated about. My wife is an alumni. Our son is an alumni. Our daughter-in-law is an alumni. I’m not going anywhere. But games like last week make me crazy. I don’t like saying we’ve become the Clemson of the SEC but it sure feels like that’s what happened in recent years. And I hate that. I have always believed fervently that Georgia is a championship team that wasn’t quite living up to its potential. Under Richt at least, we always seemed to be right on the cusp and I just knew we were going to get there again. Soon. Now I’m beginning to wonder if the truth is we’re a decent to good team that occasionally plays over our heads.

We are likely to get fricking boat raced. I thought we’d turned a corner on defense, and with our attitudes. Now I find out that neither has occurred. As many times as we’ve heard about players taking the game for granted, and then us either losing or getting completely boat raced, you’d think that somebody sometime would tell his teammates, “hey, remember South Carolina 2012?” Or “hey, remember Vanderbilt 2013?” Or, “hey, remember how we almost lost to a sorry-assed Tennessee team this year?” If you can’t learn from past beatings to take every fight seriously, then a) you’re stupid and b) deserve your regularly scheduled beatdowns. Until someone (ahem, coaching staff) manages to convince the ENTIRE team that those who think they can just roll their helmets out there for an SEC game better wise the $#@! up, we’re going to continue to yak up somewhere between 1 and 3 of these every. Single. Freaking. Year. And I’m sorry, but a good deal of that comes down to coaching. It’s a pattern. Last week, we Georgia’d. I hope we don’t come out and Georgia again this Saturday, but you never can tell.
