“I always think you’ve got to be – I say it all the time – balanced.”

Ah, yes.  The “B” word.  Mike Bobo’s mantra.

Except I’m not sure that word means what he says it means.  Here’s the full quote:

“I always think you’ve got to be – I say it all the time – balanced. And you’ve got to be able to run the ball in this league. Just going back every year and kind of doing a self-study, the years that we had over 500 carries as an offense we were always pretty successful and ending the season very well in a higher bowl with more wins. So our goal going into this year was to rush it for over 500 attempts. We’ve maybe rushed it a little more than I thought we would. [Emphasis added.] But we’re always going to run the ball. We’re always going to give the element of getting in a two-back set and make guys fit those runs and play those runs, which is a little bit different than what guys are seeing, and then still give the ability to spread out. I think that’s what makes us hard to defend. We’re not your traditional two-back team and that’s all we’re going to do. We’ll get in spread. We’ll go hurry-up and run a lot of different things. But we still always want to let guys know we’re at the ballpark by being physical.”

“A little more”?  Actually, Georgia is on pace to set a record for highest percentage of running plays in the last decade.  And it’s not really even close.

2014 — 63.6 percent runs
2013 — 51.4 percent runs
2012 — 56.8 percent runs
2011 — 57.2 percent runs
2010 — 55.9 percent runs
2009 — 56.4 percent runs
2008 — 51.6 percent runs
2007 — 58.4 percent runs
2006 — 55.4 percent runs
2005 — 55.6 percent runs

Note that prior to this season, the three years above with the high percentage of running attempts (’07, ’11 and ’12) resulted in a 33-8 record, two SEC title game appearances and a BCS bowl game for Georgia’s teams.

That’s where the talent is this season.  It’s an enormous swing from 2013, which makes sense when you think about it, because after the first half of the Tennessee game, Georgia was playing only true freshmen at tailback until Florida and even after that, played them when Gurley needed a blow.  (And Gurley was hurt prior to Tennessee.)  Aaron Murray was by far Mike Bobo’s best bet as the horse to ride.  This year, with Murray’s departure, even with Georgia again playing true freshmen tailbacks, the talent has swung from the quarterback position to running back.  Bobo’s just following the talent.

But there’s more to it than that, though.  Bobo’s been able to rely on the running game as much as he has because the course of most of Georgia’s games this season have let him do so.  As he describes it,

On whether there have been games this season he planned to throw it more …

BOBO: “There’s no question. Even in this game (against Auburn), I thought we’d have to throw it a little bit more. But the defense was playing well, and we got the lead, and we were just trying to keep the ball away from that offense. And grinding out first downs was the way to go. Each game kind of dictates how we go. There’s a mindset we want with into each game of what we’re trying to do, but sometimes if you have success running the ball early and are keeping the defense off the field, we’ll stick with what works.”

I would suggest that’s exactly what you want out of your offensive coordinator.  Let him sing all the praises to balance he wants.  Me, I’ll hum “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” all day long.  Just keep doing what you’re doing, Coach.

Big, strong offensive line. 4-5 tailbacks that range from fast and physical to terrifying. Various injuries in the receiving corps. Bobo would have been crazy not to try and run it down opponents’ throats.

We’re nearing a half decade of fantastic offenses under Bobo, and yet if we have just one game like Malzahn had against us last week georgia fans will be calling for his head as loudly as ever.

When Richt eventually gets an NC I’ll be almost as happy to get a brief reprieve from our fanbase’s unparalleled stupidity as I will to actually have the title.

How dare you insult Hutson Mason like that! His momma might read that. Hutson IS where the talent is. He IS the man. He is awesome. Bobo won’t let him loose cause he only says he cares about balance. That was all a lie. He has always promoted balance and been balanced so that some great day in the future he could have the great Hutson Mason and shut him down. Its all a great plot, because Hutson Mason is the best QB ever!!!! Bobo’s crayon just takes him out of the game!!

Again into the breach: Balance is a goal because you don’t play shit teams every week. Some can stop the run. Some can stop the pass. If you do both well you can exploit the other teams weaknesses. It’s better to be balanced than exploited. Its better to dictate than be dictated to. Bobo knows the risks of getting off balance, but yes, win the game by whatever means necessary. Balance, all other things being equal, is a key to success. Balance, however, may not always be available.

Yep. Hutson had best turn around and go home with that mediocre 68% passing average.

Y’all can keep killing the messenger as much as you’d like. If we get to Atlanta and get run, remember what we’ve discussed. If we pull off a miracle, make sure you include Bobo in your thoughts when you think of the great football coaches, because its his, not Mason’s, skirt you ought to be blowing smoke up. .

    This really impresses me:

“Seventh nationally in scoring offense, Georgia is averaging 42.1 points per game, a clip that would decimate the program record of 37.8 set two seasons ago. At 449.1 yards per game, the Bulldogs’ current offense would rank fourth in school history statistically. The 2013 and 2012 offenses rank 1-2. So if that holds, Bobo could exit this season have coached three of the best four offenses Georgia has ever produced.”

3 of the top 4 offenses in school history. Not bad use of a crayon.

Name the schools that had better skill position talent than UGA the last three years. Bobo has been GREAT, but so has the talent.

The point is that we should be great on offense and while Bobo is (IMO) a great OC, don’t get carried away. AND, enjoy the good times while they last. WR talent is a concern moving forward, and what if Chubb gets hurt next year? We’d have an unproven QB, and depth issues at WR and RB…Bobo would have his work cut out for him. A few years ago we had Stafford, Moreno, Massequoi (sp?), and Green and we were not a great offense because Bobo wasn’t yet an elite OC. BTW, I am not ignoring the importance of a good OL, but our skill positions have been amazing of late.

Bobo has improved in so many ways, but definitely the best is his finally being willing to go with the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mindset. Remember the days when we would run something 3 times early in a game, it would work great each time, then we wouldn’t see it again until sometime in the late 3rd or early 4th quarter? Not that Bobo was ever a bad playcaller, he’s always been good, but for a long time there he was good but with maddening tendencies. Nowadays, his playcalling mix is fantastic. Just enough variety to keep the defense off balance, but also willing to roll with what is working.

Chris Brown at Smart Football wrote years ago that a better measure of balance is on a per play basis (i.e. for each time you pass or run, is the potential there for equal success). He even built out a formula to account for the inherit riskiness of a passing play (in the form of higher turnover risk), which essentially gave a 40-yard penalty to interceptions and for both running and passing, a 10 yard bonus for TDs, since theoretically, the play could have continued to gain further yards.

Using those guides, our offense is nearly perfectly balanced this year: 7.28 yards per pass attempt and 7.24 yards per run. Bobo has our offense perfectly optimized this year (so far). Let’s not fix what’s working.

And think Gurley missed 4 games, all on the road. A frosh out of Cedartown carried the mail. Coach Doc Ayers is smiling with Vince Dooley…but it ain’t 3 yards and a cloud of dust. If Dawgs had Chubb last year if you want to wish and hope. Chubb just might be the best TB in the SEC right now.
Plus all 5 of the interior linemen have played intact this season. A 3 year starter at center. Richt has had only 2 centers in 7 years. Amazing. Game the running game was shuttered was when Andrews was injured. And they were limited with others.
Why I say if Marshall can go, play him this season. Do not red-shirt him.

I think everyone’s beef with “balance” is that CMB previously said the “‘goal’ is to be balanced”. And as many commenters on this blog have pointed out, the ‘goal’ is not balance, the ‘goal’ should be to score (and win). I personally don’t care whether we run 90% and pass 10% or vice-versa, as long as we are scoring (and winning).

There’s no question CMB has become a top flight OC, as well as QB coach and recruiter. He’s apparently grown beyond ‘balance for balance’s sake’ and we’re realizing the benefits of that epiphany.

The Dread Pirate Leach defines Balance as being able to stretch or punch the defense in any position, direction, length where vulnerability exists whether by land or air is secondary.

  14. Bobo has been doing a great job for a lot of years. Joe Cox threw 24 TD passes when 25 was the record & we won 8 games despite the defense.

This week I hope we spend most of our time on Offense checking out our
Receivers. Limit Chubb’s carries & avoid injury . Turn Mason loose.. ..
