Rea-line-ment

It’s shake up time for the o-line.

Right guard Greg Pyke has been benched and only one other starter is in the same spot, judging by the lineup at Tuesday’s practice.

Dyshon Sims, a sophomore, was in Pyke’s place at right guard. And while junior Brandon Kublanow remains at center, the other three spots were shuffled.

John Theus had switched from left to right tackle. Kolton Houston moved from right tackle to left guard. And Isaiah Wynn moved from left guard to left tackle.

If that’s what comes on Saturday, it’s not done out of panic, but necessity.  They had to do something, although if you’d have told me before the season started that Pyke would be the odd man out, I would have doubted it.

O-line underperformance has for years been masked by our thoroughbreds, especially Gurley who led the world in yards after initial contact. Wait, he still leads the world in yards after initial contact!

BTW, anyone know what Hugh Nall is up to?

as long as we’re preparing for next year, i would rather see Pyke at left guard to help out Wynn and bench Houston…or put Theus at guard, he won’t play tackle in the NFL

OL was one of the areas hurt greatly by roster size and poor numbers and talent evaluation by Serrels, Friend, Bobo, Richt….everyone. The 5 starters up to this point have played because there was no other bodies capable of tying their shoes. Glad to see Sims get a shot and hopefully next year see’s some of the current redshirted step up.

Gurley and Chubb managed to make their asses look competent when they weren’t. Those two had tons of runs where through will, toughness and talent they turned two yard losses into five yard gains. When Theus and Houston stepped up to lead the team only meeting I thought it was a joke. They’ve been GIFTED starting spots.

I’m with you Senator, Pyke should be the last one out based on last year. UGA has not had a offensive tackle in a long time, Houston is a guard and should play better at that spot. Some of this might be getting ready for next years OL rotation.
I’m also glad at least one ass gets to sit on the bench for poor performance. Now we need a few more to join him – starting with the kick returner/drop specialist and OC.

Reading the articles from Emerson and Towers I think it’s clear that Pruitt is fed up with Schottenheimer and Richt. He’s realized they’re either stupid or content and that no matter how hard he works, his coaches work or his players work you won’t see the same from Richt and his OC. I hope B-M can find a way to hang on to this defensive staff because I thing they’re building a defense with depth and talent.

5th overall in the SEC, despite zero offensive help for the past month, and playing a ton of true freshmen. Promising. The offensive staff? Well, I like the recruiting from some, but so far McClendon seemed far better as RB coach than WR coach.

Gotta agree. McClendon’s move to WR coach has been a debacle. Maybe the best RB recruiter & coach in all of cfb though.

I trust Emerson and Towers. Is this really a Pruitt vs the staff issue?? Anyone?

It would be shocking if there were no heated moments given the situation. However, if the perception among the team was that the coaches were doing a disservice, they would lay down and they haven’t. If the perception amongst the team was that people weren’t doing things the way they were supposed to be there would be closed door team meetings and/or people calling folks out Shawn Williams style.

Everything I see points to a situation where everybody knows what the issue is. It’s frustrating and it’s hard. So what are they doing? Punishing those who aren’t giving effort (Pyke) and rewarding those who you can count on to at least try (Bauta).

The big issue you would think would lead to tons of staff and player dissension is if everyone save schotty and CMR knew Ramsey should be the guy and that’s not happening either. I don’t know what our record will be over the next 4 games but my strong suspicion is that the team will play very hard for this staff…and then our qb will miss open guys and throw it to the other team and fumble and who the hell knows what else.

In the end it’s hard to look at what’s going on and not believe that everyone knows we’re short a qb and that it’s THE major problem. If it were any other position on the field, there would not be the hesitancy to publicly criticize. Hell CMR took a slight shot at Douglas post-game but nobody takes shots at the qb because that’s just the way it is. Nobody wants to be blamed for making a qb go into a shell or lose confidence at that position. Every other position it’s “next guy up.”

The article lays out that the offense being in disarray and any dissension within staff ranks needs to be handled directly by Coach Richt. This disarray is not a ‘Ramsey-should-be-the-starter’ level issue. This perception of failure seems much more macro than that. It doesn’t simply fall at the feet of the quarterbacks, but rather points an uncomfortable finger at the newly acquired O.C. I mean is Richt’s hand being forced here to reclaim play calling duties? With the potential of having to terminated a hire made less than a year ago? How much of this is conditional in protecting Richt’s own position? And how much of the dissension is simply Pruitt’s dissatisfaction with the offense staff’s approach to fixing it vs. another long time offensive assistant’s dissatisfaction with Schottenheimer’s overall performance as O.C.?? All of which sounds very far off from the typical ‘Georgia Way’ of dealing with in season issues, and may portend to a potential rudder to UGA’s ship…an uncomfortable Richt.

Could you really blame Lilly, say, for being pissed at the horrid level of playcalling from the guy who got a job he thought he had a pretty decent audition for last year? Small sample size sure, but Lilly called a better variety of runs in one game than Schotty’s called all season.

Right could and should have moved on Shotty after the Missouri game.
Think Pruitt let Richt know where he stood on the offense issue at UT game.
But Right is clever. He has allowed Shotty to walk himself out, but not far enough. in the Florida game there was an offensive line change. Look at the starting lineup re the end position..
The line issue for me is the center. Andrews left a big void re talent and leadership. Mindanao is good but not his position.
Roster management again. Look over the position roster. Linemen depth is way down. The look at the punter and kickers numbers. Can someone explain that.
Pruitt is the only SEC coach on the staff.
If Ritcht is smart he puts Shotty off the staff and dials Lilly back in.
Pruitt will leave a t end of season. Why? He is just too strong for the wine and cheese crowd. But not for SEC programs wanting championship play..

If we have 15 linemen and no O line, then it would not matter how many we have. The fact of the matter is that clearly someone has a crap eye and/or ability for O line talent development.
