“So … about that “competence” thing.”

Bill Connelly gently damns Brian Schottenheimer.

Bobo coaxed a 155.8 passer rating out of Hutson Mason in 2014 and a 135.9 out of Joe Cox in 2009. Three Georgia QBs have combined for a 131.5 so far in 2015, and that includes Greyson Lambert’s long-forgotten early stretch against South Carolina and Southern. Take those two games out of the equation, and UGA’s combined passer rating falls to 107.8.

For a frame of reference, Wake Forest’s passer rating this year is 110.1. New Mexico’s is 109.5. Purdue’s is 111.2. Yeah.

Georgia had to replace its longtime coordinator, quarterback, and top two receiving targets. Regression was conceivable, even likely. But this goes beyond regression.

Beyond regression lies incompetence.

Dang Senator if you’re going to insist on publishing logically correct statements like “beyond regression lies incompetence” I’m just going to have to, well, you know, agree and be depressed. I don’t normally drink bourbon during the week but I may have to make an exception. Is that one of the three stages of cocktail party grief?

Sure but whose incompetence? Did the oc miss a wide open Malcolm Mitchell on the fisrt play vs. Alabama? Did the oc throw behind jay Rome Saturday? It’s not as if the receivers aren’t open. They can’t hit open receivers. When they do, they drop it. Then there’s the problem of throwing to the other team. Not a recipe for passer ratings. I get that’s it’s the coaches “responsibility” to get them to make these plays. The plays are there. These qbs just suck. We’d be in the same boat with Bobo. And everybody be ready to hang Mike next to CMR. We just have shitty qbs. Terrible. Awful.

Did nick saban go 6-10 with dante cullpepper and Joey Harrington because he’s as an incompetent coach or because he had incompetent qbs? Players matter. If we had lambert/Bauta level players at the other 21 positions we’d be 1-7 at best.

You are correct, sir. Mason was able to be competent because he had a Gurley and/or a Chubb behind him. Bill Walsh couldn’t make this offense good with what we have now.

2 of the 3 QBs were developed by Bobo. Ramsey from reports does not put in the film work and that is verified on field by INTs. Bauta is not built to run the system in place. Lambert can’t complete passes under pressure. RB and OL play with Chubb out is at best mediocre. I don’t see Bobo being a vast improvement.

The only way Bobo would have been a major improvement is if Park stayed and was a success. Bill Snyder with his typical solid fundamentals and setting up long QB scrambles using Bauta might get this team to 10 wins without Chubb. UGA likely wouldn’t haven’t given up an easy 7 due to terrible special teams play with Snyder. I’m tossing Snyder out since Walsh entered the conversation.

Bauta is not a major conference qb. He was brought is an filler to see if he developed. Had he grown a couple of inches put on 25 lbs or so of muscle and gotten a feel for the game maybe he makes a serviceable qb. I still have yet to see this incredible athleticism Bauta is supposed to have. He’s fast among pocket passers sure but he’s not very big. This guy is going to round around/over sec defenses? Not in this lifetime. I have not seen one glimmer that he possesses that sort of ability. I think he’d have a better shot throwing at florida’s defense than running at it. SEC defenders are FAST!!! You better be sub-4.5 if you are relying on wheels or you can be a big powerful guy like tebow or newton. Bauta is neither.

He isn’t a world beater but I put his mobility in the same range as Mizzou’s James Franklin. You don’t run him every play but if you create a throwing/running lane and get the coverage to drop, he has space for 5-10. Mizzou didn’t win the SEC but they did win the East. UGA is looking at Kentucky in a toss up game, as I said maybe 10 wins. UGA hasn’t allowed a QB to run since DJ.

Eh, I’m not so sure. It’s up to the coaches to find ways to motivate/educate the player, but yeah the players have to make plays. Still, watching Bobo work makes me think he could coax better results out of this group. Watching Schotty change QBs on Saturday, yet run the same batch of plays, tells me he doesn’t really change his scheme to fit the players.

Sony Michel ran well in relief of Chubb last year and early this year, yet now he’s a bum? I don’t think so. I think he’s not being put into position to be successful.

That’s similar to the problems with the QB. Seems like Schotty’s trying to get Michel to run plays that Chubb excelled at. Spotty blocking and a stacked box? Let’s send Michel up the gut, sometimes with no fullback!
We should have listened to the Rams fans who tried to warn us about this.

Michel is an outstanding individual player, but he’s a racehorse not a workhorse. Chubb could carry the ball thirty times a game. Michel can’t do that. (The two of them compliment each other very well.)

But when you can’t rely on the QB, you need a workhorse at running back. We haven’t had one since the first snap in Knoxville.

They wouldn’t transform into better QBs, but I think we’d be calling plays that hid their weaknesses and accentuated their strengths. That’s what good coaches do.

Since he has been here, Schotty has run off one QB (who admittedly I dig just for calling Towers ‘Brah’), determined that the would-be-starter with a cannon arm has an attitude problem at QB (but somehow not at punter–weird), brought in and started a headcase/failed ACC QB (that proved why he lost is starting position at VA), then started the mobile QB without changing the offense one iota, in a rivalry game.

That should be plenty to send him packing. Add in his aversion or inability to field an offense that scores touchdowns and I don’t see why he hasn’t already been fired.

I don’t know what to make of it. We have/had Lambert, Ramsey, Bauta, Park, and walk-ons Robinson and Vaughn. Maybe CMB could’ve made something out of one of those guys. I don’t know. No one can contest that we’re getting worse at the position as time goes by. And even more upsetting, I can’t believe Eason would walk into this situation as it continues to deteriorate. And that removes any hope we have for improvement next year.

Plenty of top schools – No, make that every top school, is on the doorstep with an offer.

Financial aid? Eason is anticipating a football career worth multi millions. The Schotty/Richt combo isn’t looking like a smart move from that perspective.

Maybe its just me, but I don’t see a bowl game in Birmingham, Shreveport, Charlotte or jax as a big draw for recruits. Just a guess, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gone from all-in to having one foot out the door already.

Is he lining up some back up plans, just in case? Probably. What choice does he have given the poisonous atmosphere? But keep in mind that it’s not doubts about the coaches that will effect Eason. Doubts about what will be done to those coaches could. Does he want to come here thinking CMR is on a short leash? No. Does he want to come here thinking CMR is being given one year for “significant improvement”? No. That’s why everybody needs to keep their head here and say we are all in this together because once the qb situation sorts out, we’ll be ok. I’d look at last years recruits too and tell him how Chubbs rehab is coming etc. I’m not as surprised by the o-line play as some. I think that if we were completing a high percentage of first down passes like we should we better be able to dictate to the defense than the other way around. This offensive line was never going to square up and whip sec d-lines in the first half. This is why qb play is so important. You get you best looks on first down and you have to hit them. Then things open up. We’ve had to almost go woody Hayes at times because if lack of faith in the qb. Hard to do against sec defensive lines like floridas and Alabama’s and Missouri’s. Too fast and too strong when they know what’s coming.

I also fail to see why at least advocating for a new OC, who could perhaps adjust gameplans to play to strengths of the players he has healthy, and not some guy who admits “i should have called better run plays” after throwing his 3rd-string QB into a pass-heavy gameplan against the best secondary on the schedule in the 8th game of the year, is a bad thing for recruiting.
Eason signed his paperwork before seeing what Schotty’s playcalling looked like in games. I think seeing Schotty replaced, with say WKU’s OC (30/5 TD/INT ratio, managed a scare of LSU, despite being far from a 5-star QB) can only help things.

Uh, yes, in fact you can consider what statistics look like when you remove something that is far removed from the others.

Those things are called outliers. And accounting for outliers is very much a part of statistical analysis.

So, yes, statisticians of every stripe play with the numbers in an effort to paint the correct picture.

In this case, he was spot on to see what the numbers looked like by removing the two data point that were so far outside of the curve.

True, but did they take the best performances out of the other numbers we are comparing our QBs to? I am not making a case for us having stellar play at QB, just asking if the comparisons are equal. We also had a much feared running attack on the field when we played SC and Southern, and the OL handled the defensive fronts in those two games. I realize there are always other factors but our OL has been abysmal, and I honestly don’t know why. (Did we change from man to zone blocking this year?) But I do know that a pro style scheme isn’t going to work when your OL gets stuffed repeatedly. Those teams without a strong passing QB, solid RBs, and weak OLs manage with trickeration and a spread package.

Then we should be using more spread and trickeration. Part of a coach’s job is to maximize what you have, not keep doing the same thing over and over again when its never going to work.

I don’t argue that at all, just not sure how quickly you can flip that switch, or if you have the right athletes/skill sets to do so. I also don’t know how soon they realized how horrific the run blocking would be, and I am pretty sure they didn’t anticipate losing their best play maker on offense after Game 5. Not as easy on the field as it is behind this keyboard.

Well, if we’re going to call those “outliers”, perhaps we should instead remove the QB rating from the Alabama and Florida games. Aren’t those likely “far outside the curve” on the other side of the spectrum?

The season (and these QB’s) have too few games (far too few data points) to argue outliers are at play here – Connelly wasn’t doing careful statistical analysis, he was removing two pesky QB ratings from his narrative.

That’s exactly right, and I think that’s why Ramsey was Bobo’s guy. To play in Bobo’s system you had to take chances downfield, and sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn’t. The high risk/high reward aspect of a gun slinger just wasn’t the style of an NFL OC, and it’s showing. Maybe Ramsey hasn’t earned the spot yet, or he quit after Bobo left. OK. They were NOT 5 yards short of a natty in 2012. They were 5 yards short of an SEC title. With the history of Richt’s brain farts and let downs in bowl games, there is no guarantee that we beat ND. None. Let’s keep it real around here.

If you give ND a chance in that game you are far from “real.” You are Mark May picking Hawaii to beat us in the Sugar Bowl.

We need to lay off the QB’s a bit. It was a total offensive(and special teams) debacle. The offensive line, receivers, fullbacks… everyone made mental and physical errors. We couldn’t convert 3rd and 1(twice) and 4th and 1 early in the game. Dropped pass in Florida territory. Dropped pass in the end zone that could have given us a little spark with 13:00 minutes left(followed by a game ending INT). Dropped pass that leads to an INT.

It was clear from the start that our defense was capable of making this a dawg fight. All we had to do was grind it out and not turn the ball over and the game would have come down to who wins the 4th quarter. Instead, we had a 1st time starter chucking it 30+ times and our side of the stadium turns that disgusting off blue Gator color.

Meh… Not defending Shotty but I don’t think you take it games to determine the averages. If you do that then you need to remove Mason’s and Cox’s best game as well. He selectively manipulated the data to make it say what he wanted it to. He should work for Fox News…

Cue was post UF game…the no sweat comment from CMR and the OC made available to press after game.

God, I would love it if I thought there was even a remote possibility that Schottenheimer would be fired after just one (abysmal failure of a) season.

But based on what we’ve seen from Richt et al. up to this point, there’s no way that’s going to happen.

So, I shouldn’t pay to fly the banner of the stadium on Saturday that says, “GO DAWGS and TAKE SCHOTTY WIHT YOU? It’s just $500. Let me know and I can’t get my money back after Thursday.

Go to the Georgia Dogs site and look at the stats.
The run chart or play chart.
Notice the number of times and field position where you see the run is “up the middle”. Number will not be greater than 22, after all that is all the RBs saw all day. Not only did UF not break a sweat, neither did the offense.
The play call is “regression behide the line of scrimmage by any means”.
It is regression. Just dial back to the Missouri game.

Now if you want a power run game check the film on Mike Bloombergs oline at Stanford. Check the number off lineman and the gaps.

Frankly it is not a QB problem but an offense problem with the QB situation used to mask the incompetence of an OC.

There’s plenty of blame to go around. Players definitely deserve blame for dropped passes, etc. But there is also something to be said for what it does to a players psyche when they have Zero Confidence in what their coaches are doing…..

Here’s why Richt won’t be fired. He told McGarity (and no one else), “Look. It’s gonna suck for a year or two. I mean, we are going to STINK. There’s just too much adjustment with a newish DC and a brand-new OC and we don’t have a QB and our team is young. We will suck this year. But invest now in what we’ll be in 2017 with Jacob Eason. We’ll be competing on a national stage then.”

Art Briles is a great offensive coach. This is why:

โ€œHe gives us the opportunity to change offensively,โ€ Briles said of Russell. โ€œThat is the thing that is kind of inspiring us. We donโ€™t like being the same; we like to adapt our personnel. Weโ€™ll try to adapt to his talents and I think it will bring a different element to the table that we havenโ€™t had in two or three years.โ€

I e read this blog for years and this might be the first time I e commented.

Until 2 weeks ago I was a Richt supporter. It’s now clear to me that the incompetence lies in his management of the program and hiring choices.

Did he not learn after TG that hiring NFL coordinators was a bad idea?

Could he, the man revered for his offensive mind and ability to develop coordinators, not see early in the preseason that CBS doesn’t have what it takes to do the same?

I’m over it. These QBs are terrible and lies in CMR’s inability to recognize his coordinators’ deficiencies and step in where necessary.

He’s obviously detached from the day to day machinations of this program. If I were equally or even close to this incompetent Id have already been fired.

Am sure all these commenters are solid Georgia Bulldog fans, and will prove it by sitting with me through the rain at Saturdays game. If not quit the whining and bitching and pull for some other team fortunate enough to get you.
