Somehow, Georgia has slogged its way into a three-game winning streak and an 8-3 record. With a moribund Georgia Tech team next – and surely in that regard, this must be the season of Mark Bradley’s and Jeff Schultz‘ discontent – it’s not unreasonable to think the Dawgs have a realistic chance of notching another season with a double-digit win total.
But, man, has this been excruciating to experience. The offense is both dull and unproductive, which means that any mistake tends to be magnified, because the team’s ability to manufacture points is so constipated. And there’s no way that’s changing over the next two games. One of which, remember, is more than a month away from being played. Still, ten wins and all…
It’s sort of like being on the Bataan Death March, only the prisoners receive adequate nourishment, rest and medical attention.

I’m not even calling it a good season. If we had beaten AL, FL and TN, but lost to Auburn, Mizzou and KY, it would be just as “good”, which means it ain’t no good.

The team we beat last night was right at #40 coming in. They’ll be the only team with a winning record beaten (not counting the bowl games) too unless the Iron Bowl takes a very, very strange turn.

We can all hope, wish, wail, rail and expect greatness, but in the end, none of us have any control over Georgia football. I suggest a healthy dose of perspective in our lives and appreciate any win in football as a blessing. A small piece of joy in a hobby we all share. And understand there are still far more important things in the world.

This team plays like a slightly better than average pro squad. I don’t mean the overall talent is anywhere near NFL level, but the ugly style of play fits in better on Sunday than Saturday. And, at least on the offensive side of the ball, that’s a very dull – but also nerve-wracking – thing.

I don’t see us getting a10 win season this year unless we, 1) play better on both offense and defense next week and, 2) get very lucky with our draw in a bowl opponent. I will give credit for the team to stay together through all the adversity of this season, they are grinding out some tough wins and finding a way to get Ws but this is not a team that inspires confidence against any opponent.
The OL problem is so bad that there are few alternatives the coaches can select to improve things at this point. If we face a really good offense in the bowl game, especially one with an explosive passing game, we could get beaten by 30+ in a bowl. game, imo. Nine wins looks like the ceiling to me, and 8-5 is possible. Some will use season stats on passing defense to convince themselves otherwise but we are not fundamentally sound in that category and have benefited from not facing a top QB with good WRs.

Curious … we held a triple-option offense (#1 rushing in the country) to 150 yards under their season average rushing… and our D gave up 10 points.

Did I miss something? Our defense just gave up 10 points in an overtime game. And you are calling them out? Can you not see that we are totally incompetent offensively and very good defensively? Why is it so hard to admit this? Our “ceiling” is our offense. And if Pruitt leaves, you will get your wish to see a defense next season that is “not fundamentally sound.”

I saw one bowl projection that put us in the Citrus (not sure how that happens, but anyway) vs An Ohio State. Really hoping that matchup does not happen. Their front 7 vs our OLine and QB play? We might struggle to hit 150 total yards.

That was the weirdest environment I have ever been in at Sanford. I am guessing 30% of the stadium was Southern fans and they are a different crowd. We played about like expected. I don’t know why I hope or expect to see improvement on offense every week. Silly me. The crowd went wild when Sony scored in OT and 5 mins later all of the air was out of that balloon as we took one last look at the product on the field and anyone who knows at least a little football had to be struggling to find what we had to build on working towards next year. I am in a weird place trying to figure out how they fix the myriad of structural and coaching problems with this team. I left last night feeling even more confused with how we became what we have become. We are truly the worst 8-3, 5-3 in the conference team I have ever seen.

For those of you who gave or sold your tickets to GSU fans (including the 2 behind me), it’s better to have the tickets go unused than for them to go to an opposing team’s fans. It’s inconsiderate to the season ticket holders who sit around you. If you don’t want to attend, fine, but eat the cost of the damn tickets or get them to a Georgia fan. For the people who did the same for their Alabama tickets, please do us all a favor and give others better seats.

It’s kind of like this: during the games Lambert makes me want to pull my hair out, but after last night’s game I saw he was 16-25 with no INTs. I can’t believe he can play so badly and come away with a serviceable stat line, but it’s a microcosm of the team. To me we look worse than the 6-7 2010 squad on the field, but are somehow 8-3.

It is true his stat lines are good. It is also true that the coaches, know his limitations and, other than a few deep throws, only play to what he does best. Unfortunately, opposing defenses know what he does not do well andoad the box on our running game.

Two of ten on third down conversions should bring you back. And out two minute drill that consists of four yard passes. It’s almost like our two minute drill isn’t designed to get points but rather to get a first down.
And come to think of it I think that since Chubb went down we are averaging more first downs per game than points…. wooohoooo!

I know that anything that deals with football is largely a waste of time with the vast majority of you who think Richt fumbled on the jet sweep or that Schotty should have told 26 not to fumble in the red zone, but the fact is that our qb may be the worst in modern times. Don’t believe me? Read this:
Georgia’s O-line has a rough night … or did it?
ATHENS – Kolton Houston knew the final play, or what proved to the final play, was in good shape when the Georgia left guard got to the line and saw Georgia Southern had bought into the three-wideout look, and had two safeties back.
“They were in the perfect look,” Houston said. “And I said: This play has got a chance to spit. And sure enough she went right down the pike.”
Sony Michel did indeed go right through the middle for the game-winning 25-yard touchdown on Georgia’s first play of overtime. The blocking on the play was perfect, and Michel did the rest.
“But the rest of the game didn’t look so good blocking-wise for the Bulldogs, at least from afar. Quarterback Greyson Lambert was sacked twice and rushed several more times. Prior to Michel’s touchdown, and excluding the 23-yard Isaiah McKenzie touchdown on the first drive, and Georgia runners only averaged 3.9 yards per attempt.
Still, Houston pushed back on the idea his line was at fault. They actually had a good night, he said, considering the numbers that were thrown at them.
“People probably see all the pressure and all that kind of stuff and might think we didn’t play good. But it’s hard to block eight people with five people,” Houston said.
Georgia Southern “probably blitzed 90 percent of the time,” Houston added. The final play was part of the 10 percent.
“That’s hard to do, when people are slanting and twisting and blitzing off the edges,” Houston said. “I think we handled it pretty well, and we were able to keep grinding, and keep pushing, and we came out of here with the W.”
Right tackle John Theus, who spent most of the night on the edges, saw basically the same thing.
“They definitely dialed up and brought everything but the kitchen sink at us,” Theus said. “They were twisting and bringing stunts and all kind of pressure. We had to respond to it, but we did a good job, had a good gameplan for it. And tried to make out adjustments as best we could.””
You do that against any type of qb and you get scorched. You are toast. You do it to lambert because you can get away with it. They are teeing off on us at the los bc they damn well know there won’t be any cost to pay. The entire fucking point of having a qb and the downfield pass is to eliminate this as an effective defensive strategy. But it’s effective as hell against us.
Someone asked why does this team looks like a 6-7 team but are 8-3. Defense, better players overall, and squeezing enough points out of this rock hard lemon of an offense due a putrid qb. I literally got ill watching that guy. I’ll watch next week and the bowl, but if I never see that guy take another meaningful snap at UGA after that it will be soon enough. Whoever made sure that the program has not gone into death spiral and that they’ve hung together and fought with that albatross around their collective necks should be credited.

I’m sure that you’ve seen all sorts of great qbs struggle with 8 and 9 men boxes with safeties coming downhill to stop the run and they are helpless cuz coaching, right? We that know football (this is the sport you are watching btw) understand that the qb has to get those guys playing on their heels. Schotty cannot go on the field and ask the safeties to BACK THE FUCK UP!!!!

For all the talk of blitzes and games up front, we NEVER saw a screen pass to Sony. I get the offensive line was dealing with a team selling out on every play, but, damn, Schottenheimer, do something to compensate.

They threw a second down screen to Sony at around midfield going towards the railroad tracks in the left flat. Of course he threw it behind him and it was incomplete.

I think he was injured last wee but think he has now pulled the plug on himself. Don’t know that but his announcement that he is going to turn pro at this odd point in the season may be that he told Richt he didn’t want to risk anything at this point. Don’t know if we will ever hear any thing about it publicly, but that is my bet. since he was almost ready for Auburn and traveled there. Interesting to see if he travels to Atlanta this week.

OK. Let me jump in here. I will just summarize my thoughts.
The three losses STINK.
We didnt compete with bama.. but somehow didnt quit.
The TN loss is unbelieveable.
The Florida loss is worse…
If you had told me we would have only ONE reliable receiver, No QB, lose Chubb, and still have a chance to ONLY lose three times, i would call the coaches Magicians, and that you were crazy.
Call me the eternal positive finder, but I dont think we were that good coming in…we hung our hat on improved defense (got it), not needing much from QB (but we did), and having Chubb.. (thanks neyland stadium turf)… we let the media tell us we were awesome when we were about to play more freshmen than anyone else in the country… the 2013 class left us bare in a LOT of areas…. these last two classes stopped the bleeding some…
I am VERY disappointed in the losses.. I HATE them.. but when other teams we have had in the past would have somehow found a way NOT to win last night.. somehow these guys rallied and found a way to win against a pretty darn good team……. if we blame Richt for losses (and we do).. I think he held these guys together after some stinking saturdays.

I always thought good coaching came into play when two teams of equal talent were playing and you won. Or, even more, when your team beat a team with greater talent. I never thought coaching looked good when you scraped by a team made up of players you didn’t even recruit. Credits, IMO, to the GSU coaches.

If anyone followed the Ohio State program during the Tressel years, this Georgia team in the last 3 games (plus the Missouri game) looks a lot like a few of the Tresselball teams. Not the ones with Troy Smith at QB, but the ones with the more game-manager-type QB. Good defense; lots of punting and field position strategy; unimaginative offense with safe throws and boring handoffs. And usually an uninspired win in the end. But you run into problems playing that way against the good teams like Alabama and Florida.

I think after all the bad losses, especially the (nearly) annual bed-crapping against UF, some credit has to be given to UGA staff for stringing some W’s together. True, it’s been against less than stellar opposition. But keeping the program together enough to win those games is the difference between coaches who get fired and those that don’t. Richt couldn’t win the biggest games this season, but he didn’t go to sleep on the gimme’s, either. Biggest issue to me is what a 9-3 season means to Bulldog Nation? What’s the dividing line between good/great and mediocre? Is a coach who churns out an average of 9+ win seasons like clockwork despite falling consistently short of championship play a failure? It appears that’s not enough for LSU. I think in the end UGA will stand pat.
