“It’s time to go.”

At least that’s what this guy thought about Tom Osborne in 1990.

No, it’s not meant to be commentary on Richt’s fate.  But hindsight sure is funny sometimes.  And maybe we fans don’t always know as much as we think we do.

TO couldn’t win until Switzer got OU crushed by the NCAA. OU was the only game on the schedule that the other team had as much talent thru 1990. After 1990 Colorado was the only team close to Nebraska’s talent level. TO had it made only having to win one tough conference game and then the orange bowl / BCS bowl to get a national title. I especially enjoyed the beat down he put on spurrier. CMR has a much tougher schedule each year and I do not think another team he coaches win a conference title.

Osborne’s 1995 team won convincingly over everyone, including #2 Florida (12-1), #5 Colorado (10-2), #7 Kansas State (10-2), and #9 Kansas (10-2). There wasn’t a team that could touch them in football that season. To credit a weak slate for the greatest team in the history of CFB suggests you probably don’t know what you’re talking about.

Kansas and Kansas st.- really ? I mentioned UF and Colorado specifically. TO underachieved most of the time with top shelf talent.

He was 60-3 his last five years. Has there ever been a better five year run? Go to his wiki page and look at his 25 years as a head coach. For years he “underachieved” because he never won it all.

So after the first 19 years of underachieving with the same talent level only the last 5 years count? Nebraska in the Big 8 played one game against a team with equal talent every year and OU owned them, Nebraska won 6 times..

I didn’t think he underachieved those 20 years ( 16 top ten finishes ). I’ll give you OU and NU were the cream of the Big 8 those 20 years, but other teams had their moments, and Nebraska played quality out of conference games every year.

Yes, really. They finished the season ranked in the top ten for a reason. You can look it up.

The thing about all this Richt stuff is that if he had success, people will find a reason to blame it on everyone else. If he stays, people will complain as soon as the new guy doesn’t win a game. Everyone seems to be so damn fickle and entitled, and it’s making me sick of college football.

Richt has not cratered out. He’s lost 3 games, one to a legitimate team, another in a game where our Heisman candidate went down play one, and another in a game where it just went pear-shaped. Shit happens sometimes.

Yes, I’m a Richt-apologist, and I’m not going to convince others to change their position. Part of me wants him gone, though, so that we can see most of you haters for what you are, which is an unhappy lot who just wants something to bitch about.

        • No. I Just give my opinion. If you don’t like it then so be it. And as far as MR’s salary goes if you don’t get that the more you are paid the more is expected of you. Some of y’all act like MR is coaching for free and therefore can’t be criticized. If you don’t understand a free market economy than I don’t know what to tell you. If MR doesn’t like meanies criticizing him he’s free to quit and stop cashing those big checks. Of course like CEOs of large companies he’s got a golden parachute if he were to be fired. He’s a nice guy it would seem but he’s not coaching football for altruistic reasons.

    • And btw. 15 years is far from fickle. I get it. Some of y’all love MR so much that the inexplicable losses and bad hires don’t matter to you. Not everyone feels that way and that doesn’t make one a hater.

Osborne in Richt at the end of 2012 before Georgia-Nebraska:

“I know he’s a fine person and I admire the way he conducts himself, the way he coaches,” Osborne said. “He has good values, and it does seem no matter how much success you have that people tend to focus at some point on what you haven’t done. That’s unfortunate.”

All 25 of Osborne’s teams won at least nine games and went to a bowl.

“I guess my thought was, if we could play well at a level where we were capable of winning a national championship, that had to provide some satisfaction because there are always things you can’t always control,” he said. “You can’t control a bounce of a football, you can’t control an official’s call, an injury. If you’re playing at that level, sooner or later you will knock the door down and win.”

I’ve made peace, well maybe accepted is a better way of putting it, with the fact that Richt isn’t going anywhere any time soon, and lots of our fans are very happy about that. From what I read here, it doesn’t matter what we do because Richt is supposedly getting maximum results given the circumstances and nobody could do a better job. So nine or ten wins and a inconsequential bowl game is the best we can expect and should learn to be satisfied with that. It takes a lot of the fun our of it knowing we probably won’t ever be more than what we’ve been under Richt and most people don’t think we should even try. Because Richt will most likely get us ten wins and the embarrassing losses don’t matter because lots of people would be glad to get ten wins. I’m on the edge of my seat about the game tomorrow knowing it probably doesn’t mean anything win or lose.

The problem I have with a new coach is unless his last name is Belichick and his first name Bill it ain’t gonna matter. Can somebody name one coach anywhere who can kick Nick’s lil miniature ass, On a semi-regular basis? What’s funny to me is the Tidenation was just about to turn on Nick’s lil ass, they were pissed that he lost to ole miss and had he lost to us. He was about to feel some heat himself, go check the bama papers prior to our game with them. Not, that it mattered after the thorough anal cavity search they did on us.Their victory completely quenched any thirst for blood (isn’t it amazing some of Nick’s greatest moments we supplied). So, who is that guy that we could really feel good about? Chip Kelly, Dabo, Fuentes? as crazy as it sounds the only coach i would feel good about is the Old Ball Sack with his drunken ass….delusion and desperation be damned.

        • I’d be happy with a guy that could beat UF. Yeah. If you want to win the SEC you probably have to go through Saban but we lost to a first year UF coach and the guy that gets made fun of on here at UT. UGA is becoming half of the memes that get made fun of on here. SC is always “wait til next year”. How many posters on here are saying the same thing. Butch Jones is a dumbass. He beat us this year. We can’t fire Richt because who could do better. The guy at UF curb stomped us in his first year and won the division.

I don’t think facilities and recruiting budgets are going to matter. We will continue to be what we have been. And when that becomes apparent in a few years, people will still get their backs up and cry heresy when it is pointed out.

No. He cannot. Because of this:
          Era/UGA Wins/SEC Rank re Wins/UGA Recruiting Rank v. SEC
          2001-15(Richt Era)/144/2nd (tied w/ AL; LSU 1st at 150)/1st (tied w/ LSU)
2007-15(Saban Era)/83/3rd (behind LSU 88, AL 96)/4th(bnd. AL, LSU, UF)
          2011-15(last 5 yrs)/48/2nd (tied w/ LSU, AL 58)/3rd (behind LSU, AL)
          2014-15(last 2 yrs)/18/2nd (tied w/ MSU, AL 22)/4th (behind AL, LSU, UT)

CMR is slightly underachieving for his career re wins considering the talent that he has brought to Athens, but overachieving during the second half of his tenure. Recruiting has slipped in the last ten years. As the head man, CMR deserves significant portion of blame for this slippage. However, so does wildly profitable athletic department that only this year decided to increase recruiting budget by 80% to bring UGA into top tier of SEC spending. AD is known as Dr. No among football coaches. That is not a recipe for football excellence. Meyer and Saban raised the resources bar in the mid 2000s and UGA did not keep the pace. Frustrated UGA faithful are overestimating UGA talent and underestimating drag from athletic department that is not proactive with its considerable cash.

When are we going to learn that recruiting rankings mean nothing? They’re numbers pulled out of thin air. Nobody can tell how high-school kids are going to perform at the college level. I think too many fans’ expectations are set by what arbitrary number some computer stat geek puts on an eighteen-year-old’s head.

Never, because they do mean something. You really think somebody like Saban would spend all that effort chasing five-star kids if it didn’t mean anything? Don’t be silly.

Why not put up a poll for those who frequent/read this blog and lets see if the 85/15 % distribution of like/unlike fan sentiment continues to be valid?

The AJC is averaging one article every day in the obvious quest to topple or assist in the toppling of a CFB Coach. That ain’t what sports reporting is about, is it? The writers have made the story largely about them and their opinion while trying to hit a target in a fog and for what purpose? To clean up or improve the game of football? Nope, they are inciting small masses to revolt against logic and reason just for the hell of playing with fans’ emotions about firing their coach. No objective for the good to see here at all.

Mumbled threats from the mouths of endowment big wigs is no reason whatsoever to begin thinking of firing this coach. Show me how their moneyed opinion will be good for our program and will buy better coaching in the immediate future and I might agree with you. But we’ve gone through that argument for over two years to no avail, haven’t we?

There’s something bad wrong here that smells like the “telegram inundation” farce . Who keeps thinking up and placing wheels on horse manure hearsay w/o putting out the “Do you beat your wife often” question? These are not sports articles; on the contrary, they are tenuous air biscuits made of fantasy importance and cooked in an atmosphere of negative impatience.

Aren’t we really just talking about the likelihood and/or frequency of winning a national title each year out of the eligible 128 teams in D1…we’re already screwed…Especially if regularly winning 9 or 10 wins in a 12 game schedule is the definition of mediocrity?
I’m convinced if we’d have won the SEC in 2012 (our best shot in decades) and then beat Notre Dame for the Natty, we’d still be having this discussion.
