I guess the NCAA’s had enough of 5-7 teams having a place to go in December.
Although one wonders if the WWL shares the same enlightened outlook.

NCAA approves 3-year moratorium on new bowls, sources told @ESPN. Austin, Charleston & Myrtle Beach were in process of adding bowls in 2016

“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23
Where in the heck were they going to play a bowl game in Myrtle Beach? Do they have a stadium there?

Coastal Carolina’s campus? That would be the only place I could think of in Myrtle Beach.
Charleston would be a bigger question about where they would play a bowl game.

The Citadel’s stadium in Charleston holds 21,000. It is nicer than a lot of the stadiums used in the lower tier bowls that draw <20K.

If El Cid’s stadium is nicer than some places, the some places have problems. I mean, it’s OK; but it’s not super-nice or anything.
Still, Chucktown beats the hell out of a lot of places. Most places, actually.

Good point. I didn’t think about the cadets that took down the Cocks

Do they even care? Shoot by now I’m surprised they haven’t done a bowl game on a practice field with a giant green screen to add the crowd.

Well played

Imo, a program should have to have more wins than losses to play in a bowl game. Even after that there are probably still a half dozen bowls too many.

Whew…I’m just glad the St. Petersburg and Bahamas Bowl got grandfathered in just in time. Otherwise these two great bowls would have never seen the light of day, which would have been absolutely devastating to anyone who truly cares about CFB.

Sorry, but I won’t have anyone badmouthing the Popeye’s Bahamas Bowl. Between the sponsor and the location, what’s not to like?

Well, you need to understand that I eat mostly a vegan diet and I abhor fried food, so its only natural that I’m going to be bitter against Popeye’s. After all, the 1-2 times a year I allow myself a trip to Popeye’s is basically a religious experience. As Chris Rock said (paraphrasing): “Popeye’s is too good…you need one of those devices used that Men in Black movie that erases your short term memory after eating there.”
As for the Bahamas, my bitterness towards that island country stems from my last trip to The Atlantis, in which I’m still paying off my credit card charges from a 5 day stay there. In fact, shortly after arriving, my credit card was stolen, but I quickly noticed that I was actually saving money by it being in the hands of a thief instead of using it at the resort…so I never bothered reporting it stolen.

To live a long / healthy life, I most certainly would not recommend hanging out in the Bahama’s with Derek. Just saying… 😉

Exactly. Just more college football fans complaining about more college football games.
So weird.
More bowl game means more college football.
the math is easy here.
I also subscribe to the 5-7 relegation format where by any team that loses to a 5-7 team in a bowl game can’t play in a bowl game the next season.
– @celebrityhottub said that.

If two 5-7 teams want to play a game in December, and there’s a location that wants to host them, I don’t have any problem with it. If I’m at home when they are playing, I’ll probably watch at least some of it.

Guilty as charged. If they’re playing, I’m watching.

Sorry I can’t get into watch .500 or less mid majors playing on a weeknight in December. The NCAA has finally done something I can agree with.

If enough people agree with you, then the market will have spoken and the number of bowl games will shrink. But up to this point, the number of bowl games has been increasing and would increase further if the NCAA would get out of the way. That tells me these bottom-dweller bowl games are making money – even if they are just programming fodder for ESPN.

Was someone forcing you to watch it? If not, then why does it matter if they play the game or not?

I can’t understand why somebody wouldn’t want to cram in as much CFB as possible before the long, dark period that lasts until September.

I can’t bring myself to watch 2 mid-major teams play regardless of their record.

I usually watch them just because of my participation in various bowl pools – which is also the only reason I watch NCAA basketball tournament games.

The final score is the only thing that matters in that case. A bowl pool isn’t worth the 3 1/2 to 4 hours it takes to watch a bowl game with all of the TV timeouts. 🙂

those weird mid-week midday bowl games around christmas when the office is empty and I am standing in the breakroom watching a bowl game are great.
You see all sorts of weird plays, huge comebacks and general craziness that I love from college football.

+100. That’s why I “work” the week between Christmas and New Year’s. I can avoid the in-laws and watch the game in peace in my office.
