You wanna know why South Carolina under Spurrier went in the toilet?
We knew he didn’t care much about recruiting even in the good times, but, sheesh, that’s Paul Johnson-level sad.

“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23
It’s just that old wacky roadster syndrome, LOL.

It’s the “and staff” part that I find legitimately shocking and damning. You’d love for your head coach to be laser focused on recruiting like Nick Saban, but I doubt that Bobby Bowden knew who every guy was when they showed up, either, even when his program was still winning titles. I’m sure his staff sure knew, though, and I’m sure they made sure he knew by the time it came time to shake hands. The fact that Spurrier’s assistant coaches weren’t hungry enough to have that focus is surprising and telling.

Spur didn’t bother because he knew he didn’t have a chance with a kid that had offers from everywhere else
