My, how the mighty have fallen.

Every once in a while, I wonder how different the Richt era would have turned out if VanGorder hadn’t gotten his nose out of joint so badly over Rodney Garner… and then I remember how VanGorder’s recent career has gone and realize it probably wouldn’t have made too much of a difference in the long run.

He has great facial expressions too. Googling and image searching for him is always a lot of fun, maybe even more than Mark Mangino. I think BVG’s up there with Charlie Weis in LOL-ability, image-wise.

BVG really never adapted to the HUNH. Wouldn’t shock me if he just went back to being an NFL position coach.

Yeah, but we could’ve really, really used Van Gorder in 2005-2007. Likely win a championship in 2007 if he stayed. As the years went on, the game changed around him and he didn’t adapt, though.

There was such a noticeable difference with our D when he got to Athens, so I was (rightfully) worried when he left. It took a few years for us to begin to get good again, and even then it was spotty enough to be relieved when Grantham left for L’ville. Pruitt was a significant step in the right direction, and I think if he and Bobo had a few years together as coordinators, instead of the nightmare of Schotty, CMR would ss till be the coach.

I agree overall about BVG. I too used to wonder what might have been, but his moment of greatness appears to have passed long ago. Not sure he would have remained successful had he stayed.

WTF? Grantham’s defenses in 2011 and 2012 were far better than Pruitt’s two years. Grantham ran a very complicated system that didn’t work out well with a really green secondary in 2013. Somehow, that turns into the towel boy meme and his top 10 defense were crap? Try to have some perspective.

BVG leaving ultimately blew up in his face and ruined his career. BVG leaving screwed up CMR’s career, too. Who came out smelling like a rose? Garner. CMR should have canned Garner and kept BVG.

Off the subject some, but how about old David Cutcliffe at Duke? That guy knows what he’s doing and goes about it quietly and humbly. Great win for the Deacons against ND.

Along with Cameron. If the ref gives notice with his whistle for the clock to start, they would still be celebrating the win in Red Stick. Might not have lasted but they wouldn’t have “permanent Interim” Orgeron this week.

Clock management and the inability to develop quarterbacks did them in.

It certainly will take the media focus away from our debacle.

Also, the Aubs got some home cooking from the officiating crew with quick whistles on the sideline plays on the last drive, keeping the clock running.

That ending to the Auburn/LSU game is one of the weirdest I’ve ever watched.

I hope Junior goes to Baton Rouge. That would be delicious. Those people bug me with how great they think they are.

I know I’m supposed to know this but what happened with BVG and Garner?

I laughed about the “Garner could survive a nuclear bomb” comment. Pretty accurate. I never understood why we hung on to that guy for as long as we did. All the noise about what a recruiting genius he was never rang true. And talk about coaches surviving a nuclear bomb. Freaking Orgeron could survive months of them.

    • Story I heard at the time was BVG issued a “him or me” ultimatum to Richt, who didn’t appreciate it and called BVG on it.

That’s a pretty standard response…If you threaten to quit, (at a lot of places I am familiar with), you just did. You can’t run a business or a football program with people playing the “I’ll quit” card to get their way.

I thought BVG had some good seasons with the Falcons too. and ended up being a casualty of dimitroff’s incompetence. I assume he’s stowed away some of those millions he’s been paid over the years.

His players, like Pollack and Thomas Davis, always speak very highly of BVG.
