“Good afternoon, everybody. Nothin’ going on here!”

Nice, classy tribute to Verne Lundquist from ESPN here, with a few Georgia touches.  It’ll make you smile.

It’ll also make you a little wistful that we’re losing another voice that is part of what makes football in the South special.

A great tribute to a real gentleman. And real gentlemen are such a rarity in today’s society it seems. We will miss you Verne. Thanks for the memories!

Sadly, you should’ve typed “made football in the South special,” since worship of the almighty television dollar will continue to erode what little tradition remains. Now excuse me while I tell those pesky kids to get off my lawn.

Sad to see Verne retire. The UGA touches were all indicative of the Georgia way. 🙁

Indeed. No dramatic victories for the Dawgs in these clips, just inexplicable defeat, due to poor clock management, bad coaching and dumb plays by players. Jeez, you would hope there will be one of us actually WINNING something someday……

I guess the closer we get to Verne leaving, the less I remember a sense of his being critical of the Dawgs and the more I get mushy about a true professional laying down the mantle. I may have imagined that he was prejudiced against UGA – probably so – but I basically enjoyed his commentary. Brad Nessler in that chair – that would be a pleasure. And with that, take Danielson out and give Blackledge the commentary role. To me, they are/were the best duo in college football.

Working the Masters, SEC football, does it get any better for a sports fan in the south? Man, he has seen some stuff, hasn’t he?

That’s good of ESPN to recognize a competitor.

If y’all lived amongst Alabama fans, you’d know that they have been packing his bags for two years. They’re convinced that he hates Alabama and wants them to lose. It’s like these people can’t be happy about anything.

I’ll miss Uncle Verne, and I hope he has a long and healthy retirement.

Always entertaining to read comments from fans during a game. Every single announcing team, and all officials, are out to get them. And that applies to both sides of the same game. Yep, rational groups everywhere.

You are absolutely right, Mac. I am as guilty of SFH (Selective Fan Hearing) as anyone. In fact, I said some pretty mean things about Gary Danielson’s mother during the UT game, and I’ve never even met her.
Crazy what this game does to us. Or maybe we are projecting issues on it…….

  8. Nessler is more than capable.

    Verne is avuncular as AF

I love Uncle Vern. Saturday’s at 3:30 won’t be the same without him.

It’s too bad Ron Franklin couldn’t keep his sexist comments to himself. He was “Uncle Ron” on the prime time ESPN game from the mid 90’s onward.

I too miss Franklin doing the Saturday night games…

Was what he said all that bad, or are we just too touchy as a society?

    How about that?
