Sony and Nick — Mel Kiper has some advice for you.

Stay put.

“I don’t think Chubb or Michel has maximized his grade yet, and another year might allow that to happen,” Kiper said this week on a conference call. “This year did not allow it to happen, so if you’re happy being a third-, fourth- or fifth-round pick, you come out. If you want to try and help your stock, you go back for another year.”

Easy for you to say, bruh.  It ain’t your knee or your offensive line you have to factor into the equation.

I’ll admit it may be a closer call for Michel, but, given the surrounding circumstances, Chubb would be crazy to return.

I think at least one stays. I also think Chubb can get back to his old self after the knee. Could see him going after Sony if they both left this year.

Kiper is just like any of these guys….nothing matters until the combine. Sony and Nick aren’t first rounders…how many backs are…but whether they are 2nd or 4th round picks will all come from workouts. They have both rushed for 1,000 yards in the SEC. they’ve got enough film.

Or to put it in Saban’s words…they have no idea.

  3. I’m not sure what else Michel can do to improve. He’s a versatile guy who is good in space, but isn’t going to carry it 25 times a game for you. I’m honestly not sure what coming back another year is going to improve. He is what he is, which is a solid all-around back.

Chubb on the other hand could come back and have a stronger year, but I don’t think he needs to. Teams know what he can do and know that he will now be in that 2nd year after the injury, which is usually a good thing. A team that wants a workhorse is gonna take him probably by the 3rd round.

I agree with your view Rev plus between the offensive play calling and next year’s OL that will be missing 3 returning starters, what’s the likelihood Chubb will have a year that will improve his draft stock. Better to start earning the money and working towards that first NFL contract renewal for both these guys.

This is like Gurley/Marshall in a lot of ways. Chubb is beast of an RB for NFL, but how much will his knee factor in? Probably still a lot more than Gurley given the severity.

Michel has had a more consistent and productive career than Marshall, but some uncertainty about being a workhouse NFL back. However, like Marshall, will probably blow up the combine. While he can surely use some work on vision and patience, his physical attributes are insane. He can arguably learn to be a better runner in the NFL than he will at UGA.

I would love both to come back, but the reality is that they probably will not improve their status as much as Kiper thinks given the recent history of RB selection in the draft.

  5. Take the NFL money. Even if in the mid rounds will make tons of money, with the chance to go later and to a contender, with a chance to make more in the future based on performance. A good 7-8 year career and be set for life. No brainer.

Dunno about that, a first rounder can make a LOT more money in one year, as in a shit-ton. Have a look at this chart:

These guys have confidence in their ability that the rest of us can’t fathom. 4th-7th round for 3 years is 400-800K per year. That is an incredible amount of money for anyone. The longer they stay, the higher the minimum. Heck, Bacarri Rambo was signed to half a season with Miami this year and is making 800+K.

They owe us nothing at this point and have only so many carries. go get that contract fellas. Impress in the combine.

$2.5 over 4 years is not never have to worry about money again earnings, but that is a lot of money to have as a 25 year old figuring out what comes next in life.

  7. Agree with the above comments. Both could have sat out this year and had the same draft status. It’s all about the combine. Thanks for all you did guys, wish it would have worked out better. Now go get paid.

Mel Kiper – so what agent is Mel Kiper getting his money from to dis Sony and Chubb? This guy is an ass hat and a talking mouth piece (for agents). Bill Tobin pinned the tail on the donkey in 1994 about this dude.
Too bad Kiper isn’t still “on leave” from ESPN so his mind numbing thoughts aren’t spewed about as facts…

Just feel Nick has to go, the injury was close to ending his career ad he is one odd turn, or hit from the side to never realizing nay money for the incredible effort he has made since age 12. No, he won’t be a first rounder but another year isn’t going to change that. He hs proven what he can do on the field, and his character and work ethic are beyond improving. But if he believes he will get back to 100%, and willing to roll the dice a little, just take 3rd round money and sign a short contract. You can then renegotiate at higher terms as a free agent with a track record. I would do that before playing college another year.

While I don’t know what else Sony can do to demonstrate his talent and versatility, he probably could improve his draft stock by coming back. Yes, there is the possibility of incurring that first major injury but he can get protection from insurance to help cover that. His name is just further down the list in a class with loads of RB talent when he has been a backup most if his time. I do fear he will suffer if Chaney is retained, and he should know that this week. The fact KS hasn’t already made a move tells me we may be doomed in this regard. Neither Sony, nor UGA will be piling up impressive offensive stats and numbers under Chaney.

Isiah Crowell signed a three year deal for 1.5. He’s not going to retire off that but it’s more than Marcus Lattimore is making.

“1st round: The contract for Rams first-round draft pick Todd Gurley, the running back from Georgia, calls for him to make $13.823 million dollars over four years.

The entire contract is guaranteed, with the Rams even including language in which they agree to pay his full base salary in 2015 and 2016 if Gurley’s on the non-football injury list in either or both of those seasons.

(That’s a worst-case scenario guarantee if he has further issues due to the knee injury suffered late last season with the Bulldogs and subsequent surgery.)

Included in the overall contract is a signing bonus of $8.313 million. Gurley, the 10th overall pick in the draft, counts a modest $2.513 million against the salary cap this season. His cap number never is higher in any one year than $4.398 million over the life of the contract.”

4th round: M. Mitchell same kinda contract as Marshall but bonus was $$500,000.

” 7th round:Marshall has signed a four-year deal with the organization that is worth up to $2,408,382 with $65,550 of that being guaranteed.”

Money vs. playing career. They have made it a tangled web to try to organize but in my view, you can make a lot of money by going in the first two rounds, but chances are you’re going to a crap team (stafford, Gurley). If nick or Sony get drafted and plugged in behind a crappy line with the typical boring offensive coordinator they will be miserable on the field but going home to sleep on a mattress full of money. If they go later they may wind up on a solid team (David Andrews), where being on the field is fun and they earn a solid pay check.

Return for what? Another year of mediocrity?! We’ll be replacing the 3 most vital positions on one of the worst OLs in college ball. And the replacements will probably be true freshmen! Think about THAT pending fiasco for a minute.

With or without these 2 fine RBs, anyone thinking next year’s offense under Chaney/Pittman is going to be an improvement needs their head examined. Neither ‘coach’ has any idea what a championship trophy looks like.

I agree with Irwin R. Fletcher above. I’m betting both Nick and Sony show out at the combine. The chance either of them moves up by waiting for the 2018 draft is very remote.

  15. Over the tears I have seen a large number of Dawg Running Backs
leave early for the NFL. I have never had a problem with that.

I will not have any concern if Chubb & Michel leave early. However,
I do think that both would be better off financially & have a more
productive NFL career If they do come back for their Senior Year.
Whatever they choose to do will work for me.

I understand your points. On the other hand, if a running back’s body only has X number of carries in it, a running back playing his senior year is reducing by about 200 the total number of carries for which he can be paid.

The difference between second round money and 4th round money is not so great as to cover those 200 free carries. Moreover, the big financial goal is to get to a second contract after 3 years and Chubb would have to wait 4 years from now to get there if he returns.

Sure, if he would be drafted in the first round he gets huge money, but the NFL teams know that running backs have the shortest shelf life and draft few in the first round. If Chubb returns he faces another draft issue. A team may think “who do we want to commit first round money to, Chubb or this junior? If we give first round money to this junior we can get more carries out of his body over the course of his career than Chubb would give us for the same mone.”

  16. Speaking of running backs, what’s the deal with Holyfield? I know he played a little early in the season. Was he injured or were we able to redshirt him? The rumor early was that he was the best back on the team. Has his practice time not been up to expectations?

Sprained his ankle right before opener which allowed Herrien to pass him on depth chart and play. Herrien did well and Holyfield barely saw the field afterwards. From all reports, he was healthy once he returned around game 3 or 4. Was good enough early to work up to 3rd on depth chart so he should be fine with a full year of strength and conditioning.

    Best to wait another year.
But frankly I am not keen on Chubb being on roster
    Not a team player
After last year he wanted a path to pro, and inhis mind being a junior was all that mattered
His playing in 2016 was substandard in SEC
