Every year, it’s something different.

Now they want the defensive linemen to lose weight.

I was just thinking what’s the deal? One year you want them big and the next it is the exact opposite. I don’t understand.

Right. In CMR’s last year, Pruitt was working toward slimming the whole team. Then Kirby came in and said he wanted everyone gaining weight, getting bigger…now we’re back to slimming up? Weird.

I don’t recall Kirby saying that about the D-line. The O-line, yeah. Any links available to that, just out of curiosity?

“In the new world of college football, they want their D-linemen svelte and fast, ready to chase down the ball โ€ฆ and stay on the field.” ROTFLMFAO Seth Emerson is so full of horse shit its funny

  4. Ok, I’ll bite…if the indications they are going to up the tempo on offense are correct, then would it not make sense then to DLs with more stamina since they can expect to be on the field more?

While Kirby was going by the old Alabama physical standards last year Pruitt changed Saban’s mind. So this year Kirby had to change if he wants to continue to follow in the footsteps of his mentor and father figure. The science of this escapes me but it’s never good to keep yoyoing weight. If Kirby can’t have an original thought in terms of his style of team and play then he will never be anything but a coordinator, Saban will always be his go to idol.

Or maybe after a year of playing with the bulked up team, he watched tape and learned from that experience and has decided to go back with a slimmer team. Or maybe he really wants to play big on the defensive side of the ball but after everyone’s favorite D-line coach missed on multiple top flight d-linemen over the past couple years, he doesn’t have the depth to cycle giants in like he did at Bama so he is having to adapt to keep his best players in shape and on the field.

I guess none of those reasons would feed the “Saban Wannabe” meme so let’s go with the idea that Pruitt inherited a big, dumb, lumbering Alabama defense(one that dominated the SEC and nation for almost a decade before Pruitt became the D.C.) and transformed it into a lean mean fighting machine and Kirby is just mindlessly following suit because, well, Saban….Damn people, give it a rest

The whole weight thing is so weird to me.

Gain weight, lose weight. Seems so arbitrary.

Well, obviously it is. If you have line-cloggers, they’re only going to benefit you against power running teams. But if you play one of those power running teams and don’t have them, you’ll get destroyed. So you either try to find a line where strength and agility and weight can be flexible against multiple offenses, OR you build a ton of depth so you can substitute situationally.

      IMO….YMMV.

The only other shortcoming regarding last year that I haven’t seen addressed is the ridiculous substitution pattern on defense.. specifically the defensive lineman in the redzone. Maybe Kirby’s plan is to lighten them up so they won’t get so winded sprinting sixty yard every other play down to the goal line. Or maybe he will just let the kids play. Would love to see someone ask Kirby about it in a future pc.
