Ed Aschoff gets all “watch out!” for Jacob Eason:
No way Jacob Eason could lose his starting spot, right? The kid is a prodigy with All-American dreams. But after starting almost every game last season, he’s getting pushed a ton by early enrollee Jake Fromm. It’s great for Eason because he needs to be pushed and motivated more. Eason has all the arm talent, but his leadership has to improve and this is the kind of fire he needs lit under him.
But don’t think this is just for motivational means. No, coach Kirby Smart loves Fromm and there’s a feeling around the league that Fromm is good enough and dedicated enough to take this competition into the season … and maybe win it.
When you break it down, it seems that some believe/want to believe that Eason is being pushed more by a true freshman quarterback who’s never taken a snap in a college game than he was by a senior transfer quarterback coming off a 10-win season who began last year as the starter. Does that really makes a lot sense?
Look, I know Kirby wants to push the narrative because he doesn’t want a complacent starter and that’s fine, as far as it goes. But to suggest Fromm’s good enough right now to pose a legitimate threat to supplant Eason during the season… well, if that’s the case, shouldn’t they go ahead and give him the job now? Seeing as Fromm’s the more dedicated and all…
I’ve seen some dumb shit but absent Eason falling his face in front of an audience, Fromm isn’t taking that kid’s job. The only way you sit him is if you want him to leave. If you want him to leave with our qb depth you’re a buffoon.

Totally agree with Derek, although it’s hard to type it. He’s actually a pretty sharp dude when discussing football.
I wonder if Ed Ashcroft is hoping to cause an ugly stir amongst the youngsters…and you know there are people that would like to see one of our young gunslingers pack up and leave. I’m not saying that’s EA’s motive, but his thesis is bull-only

Every time I have even remotely mentioned on here or other Bulldog sites how good a player and leader Jake Fromm is people ridicule me and say oh no Georgia invested too much time and effort into Jacob Eason last year to play the best player this year. I hope Eason is so far ahead of Fromm this year they can redshirt him but I am starting to have my doubts that will happen.

agree 100%, praying Jacob seals the deal and plays 2 more years, BUT Fromm is special, special, special. Intangibles out the roof, players will die for him.

Sounds like the same stuff some were writing about Bauta a couple of years ago. Fromm is going to be a good (and maybe great) player, but we saw what happens with an immensely true freshman behind a questionable offensive line. I don’t want to see that again.

I wish ESPN would put an intern behind Aschoff because “he needs to be pushed and motivated more” [as an SEC beat writer], as well as “this is the kind of fire he needs lit under him” [so he will stop writing click bait]

Yes…Aschoff should STFU…we don’t need anyone trying to invent problems for this team just to get clicks. Give the guy this though..he’s willing to throw crap out there even when it’s obviously crap.

Okay, I admit I have no pipeline to the coaching staff and practice notes, but what little I have heard suggests that Fromm is a definite talent and asset, but also has found himself having to get used to the speed of the game. Well, duh. If I didn’t know better, I’d guess Aschoff has been lurking on some fan boards, did a little cut-and-pasting, posted his article and made his tee time. 😉

From what I understand, Fromm simply is not unseating Eason barring something totally unexpected. Eason will take a big leap this year while Fromm learns the O and adjusts to the speed of SEC play. TIFWIW.

First fall to second fall is almost always the biggest leap forward. Could Fromm possibly unseat Eason, sure, but if it were to happen, it won’t be this fall.

If Fromm beats out Eason, we’re going 8-5 if we’re lucky because of the offensive line. Also, if he beats Eason out, Jim Chaney is truly an awful QB coach.

I’m sorry but you obviously have a choice between an Aaron Murray type player in Fromm and a Mat Stafford type player in Eason. One was the first pick in the NFL draft and the other, as much as we loved him, is a career 3rd team NFL QB. If Kirby elects to go with Fromm over Eason, Eason will immediately become the hottest QB in CFB again and transfer to another Power 5 program. Georgia, on the other hand, will have another throwaway season and Kirby will be on the hottest seat in the SEC. Eason will start the season and the only way he loses the starting position is by injury or he just can’t mentally handle the SEC Speed and defenses. Book it.

Remember, the first pick in the draft never won anything of consequence as a college qb while the career 3rd team qb won the SEC East two years in a row and came within one play of playing for the national championship. What a player does in the NFL holds no interest for me. What they do playing at Georgia is my sole concern.

+1. If Kirby does that he will also throw away this job.

why not go Fromm like Rodgers and JE like Marinovich or J George? Ain’t all bout dat big arm bro.

That totally had nothing to do with one of those 2 being between 5’11” and 6′ tall. The NFL has always been reluctant to let a short guy under center. Of course, I am sure Murray would have looked better if he had an AJ Green in his Sr season as Stafford had in his Jr season.

I am having difficulty with anyone digging their heels in on either side of the argument, simply none of us know what the next five months will bring, and it isn’t personal to any of us. I think it is a long shot for Fromm to surpass Eason…call it 80/20 as a guess. Even longer to do so by the opener. But to deny an extremely talented player has a shot at it is pretty silly.
I fully expect Eason to be much improved, but if he isn’t, I will be disappointed that Fromm cannot win some chances before the season is over. It isn’t like we have a sure thing at QB this year, the rating I saw (not that it is a perfect portrayal of absolute truth) had Eason as the 31st best QB nationally and the 5th best in the SEC. May, or not, be accurate but seems realistic based on what we have seen. I do know if that holds true, I would not be disappointed to see someone else get some quality reps. We are blessed with having 2 legitimate talents on campus and we need better than middle of the conference pack. It isn’t worth calling anyone out and thinking them an idiot to say this should be a decent competition, albeit unbalanced in the beginning. I don’t care if our QB wears 10 or 11, and don’t understand why anyone else does…unless you are family of one of them. I feel much better about our QB success this season, and for the next 3-4 years either way. We do need them both to stay healthy.

Eason got burnt by drops. Yes every QB has drops, but damn if our guys did not often make wide ass open drops like there was some kind of prize for it. Also, had someone not taken off their helmet in celebration, Eason would have multiple game winning drives under his belt when he had to come through.
I hope Fromm is legit and I hope he is pushing Eason, but to bench a guy who has a very good skill set is just dumb. Also, lets see how good Fromm looks when LBs & DEs are coming in unblocked and the run game is only getting 1-2 yards a carry.

I don’t have much of a baseline to go off of, other than observing and meeting both in San Antonio at the 2016 and 2017 Army All-America games.
That said, I’d hunker down if I were Eason. Fromm ain’t going gently.

Show of hands, who watched Fromm play in HS? I saw him live 6-7 times, and he is really really good. He also played in the toughest region in the state of Georgia imo. His team didn’t make the playoffs in 2016 despite only three losses. They had to outscore everyone bc their defense was weak. Fromm came up just short of DeShaun Watson’s career passing yardage record despite playing ten less games, while playing against much better talent than Watson faced. Also, Watson’s high school was notorious for recruiting the best players away from surrounding high schools in their region. Fromm played at a relatively new school in a town where Warner Robins and Northside get all the serendipitous transfers. Idk if he’s better than Eason who has a season in the SEC under his belt, but granted that Eason had the worst rating of any QB at UGA this century I’m not totally ruling him out.

Fair enough, you were right. I hold myself to a higher standard than that. Without looking I believe Eason had a worse rating than Lambert in 2015. Perhaps that’s what was sticking in my memory.
