He’s come so far.

With the news that the University of Alabama board of trustee’s compensation committee will meet Tuesday to approve a new deal for Nick Saban — shockingly, his first in three whole years — comes one question:  going forward, will he make as much as Jim Harbaugh?

***********************************************************************

UPDATE:  It appears the answer is a resounding ($11.25 million!) yes.

No matter what they pay him, Saban is an Alabama bargain. Aight?

    Eleven million dollars?!

    ELEVEN?

On the backs of football players who get a scholarship, room and board, and suspended if they sell an autograph. A college scholarship is a valuable thing, but many of these players will never benefit from it because they don’t receive an actual college education. Anyone who wants to tell me the system is fair is going to have a lot more difficult time explaining to me why it’s fair that Nick Saban makes eleven million dollars a year now and his players have to borrow money for a suit to go to the annual awards gala.

$11.25, that’s more than the entire state of Alabama is worth.

Here’s the real question: If Smart won 4 national titles in 8 years and had a contract renegotiation after being 1 play away from back to back national titles, what’s BM’s ceiling?

    • Sounds like another Greg McGarity reserve fund hypothetical to me.

Believe I read that the University is only paying $250,000 0f his salary. The remainder is from shoe contracts and boosters…….”winning is everything”.

You read wrong. His base is $400,000. $2.27 million comes from fulfilling media obligations, with $1.08 million from equipment endorsements. That’s how most coaching contracts are structured. The boosters do not pay the coaches salary. But you be sure to keep your narative going.

The lifetime earnings potential of a bachelors degree over a high school diploma is about $1million.

So while that college degree certainly has a value, Saban is now being paid yearly the lifetime value of 11 scholarships.

    And Nick deserves every cent.

Kirby, go get you some of that!

  7. I remember when we thought it was absurd that Bama was giving him $4 million per year. Who knew how much of a bargain that would turn out to be?!?

Hmm, per capita for the state of Alabama that is $2.25, so Saban can now afford to buy every man, woman, and child in the state of Alabama a 24oz malt liquor to toast his new contract.

On the (admittedly silly) per capita basis, the equivalent amount for Georgia works out to paying Smart about $22.5 million a year…

Ridiculous amount to pay him but what does it matter? If they didn’t throw it at Nick. they would waste it on more unneeded help or useless amenity at a Bama facility. Saban is a good coach so you don’t want to lose him but this is excessive. Michigan should want to lose Harbaugh, and all of CFB would stand and cheer if they did.

all that cash has to go someplace. At least Nick is giving them some tangible value for the money. If they didn’t pay him and he went someplace else and won (and does anyone think he couldn’t do that?), do you think the net cost to the program would be less that what they pay him?

Problem is, when he does leave, what do they pay his replacement in today’s dollars? Pay $5-6MM and make the new guy think he is half ass?

Good for him. And the University of Alabama is growing exponentially on all fronts as well. It really is becoming the new Georgia for a lot of out of state students… especially from the Charleston area. Complacency is a death sentence. Watch Clemson boost their academics and reputation as well… along with Dabo’s new contract. Some folks evidently don’t get tired of winning.

I kind of look at it this way. Add up how much money UA has brought in since he’s been there, and how much money his players have made/ are making in the NFL and use that number to justify whether he’s worth being paid that much.
