The perception of reality, or the reality of perception?

Man, if you’re not on the Kirby Smart bandwagon, that CBS writers poll ranking all the P5 coaches is manna from heaven.

Mighty touchy, ain’t we?

The latest recruiting fooferaw involves a quarterback from Illinois neither you nor I likely would have ever heard of, except for (1) he received an offer from UGA and (2) that offer set in motion a bizarre chain of events… well, maybe more curious than bizarre.

The story begins with the offer, and the kid’s polite acknowledgement.

From there, the going gets weird.  Wisconsin, which held his commitment, didn’t take kindly to the news.

There’s a giant “wait, wut?” trying to emerge here.  Surely Wisconsin wouldn’t yank an accepted offer merely because another school offered, would it?

Oh, yes, it would.  And don’t call it Shirley.

Understand, this was unsolicited.  There was no visit planned.  No talk about keeping options open, let alone jumping ship.  It wasn’t even his second offer.

This is the Johnson Doctrine on steroids.  Or it’s the move of a program that grabbed the first shabby excuse it could get its hands on to jettison a recruit in favor of a better option.  (“Honestly, communication with UW and my feeling of being a part of ‘the family’ has been subpart at times and during several visits,” is a pretty good hint Wisconsin lost its loving feeling.)  Either way, you’d have to expect this little story is about to become weaponized on the recruiting trail.  With good reason.

By the way, young man, you’ve done nothing to beat yourself up over.  Better luck with your next college choice.

There’s bling. Then there’s bling.

One of Mike Bobo’s charges was arrested on a theft charge, but it’s not the charge that’s eye-catching so much as it’s what is alleged to have been stolen.

CSU safety Braylin Scott was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of stealing Rolex watches and diamond bracelets from a teammate’s dorm room, according to an affidavit for an arrest warrant filed to district court May 2…

In the warrant for his arrest, CSU Police Department Officer Torrey Cleveland said he responded to a report by Donnelly that a Rolex watch and four diamond bracelets were stolen April 14 from his desk drawer inside Alpine Hall on CSU’s campus.

Donnelly told police he estimated the cost of the watch at $20,000, and the four bracelets at approximately $2,000 each…

Three days earlier, Donnelly had also reported a different Rolex had been stolen out of his football locker inside Moby Arena.

Holy crap.  This kid could open his own jewelry store.  Then again, maybe it’s all just an extravagant way to apologize.

He told police he had bought the jewelry for his girlfriend.

That’s nicer than the way he treated an old flame.

The teammate Scott reportedly stole from also recently appeared on the police blotter: linebacker Hunter Donnelly, a redshirt freshman last season, who was arrested April 19 on allegations of violating a protection order for contacting a former girlfriend.

Sounds like quite the joint Bobo is running these days.
