As shitty as Tuesday night was, I shouldn’t let Brian Herrien’s effort go unmentioned.

    • I’m glad Herrien’s efforts were noted by the Georgia faithful. He has impressed me from the first time I saw him run in a Georgia uniform. Maybe we should look further for running backs than just the IMG five stars. Looking at the Georgia high school runners from this year’s crop, I think McGee should take a closer look when we need running backs. Again, well done, Brian!!

Ordinarily, he’s not as explosive as Swift or as powerful as Holyfield. But Swift should have been relegated to third string behind Herrien and Holyfield against Texas.

Most of the team might have mailed it in, but there were a few kids that really gave a lot. Maybe even a lot of them really cared. It only takes a few lackadaisical efforts to turn a game into a disaster. Once again, it goes back to coaching…and pointing to other programs and eras where the same thing has happened doesn’t excuse it. Those were all coaching failures too.
We all fail at this but “A job worth doing is worth doing right” is a pretty good and eternally true piece of advice.
This game, coupled with the LSU game may mean that the bloom is off the rose for Kirby. Not that he is under any pressure, because he has accomplished much..but the honeymoon with a lot of fans is getting kind of stale. This is the bad taste that the Sugar Bowl left for us. It will be a long off season until we can hopefully get it washed out.

Kirby and the 2018 team beat UT,UF,UK,AU,SCe,and tech like rented mules. They won the SEC east handily. They played Alabama to a standstill, lost to LSU in BR at night and lost to a rather large and physical Texas team that beat a playoff finalist earlier in the season. Who among us would not have jumped at this 11-3 season after the 2015 cocktail party?
Obviously the NC is always the goal, but I’m old school and I remember the painful losses to our divisional and traditional rivals. So… I am enjoying this immensely. Sure I was a l little pissed about the Sugar Bowl, who wasn’t? It’s a young team and as long a CKS can keep doing what he’s doing in the east and pounding the wartigles into paste in the west, I’m OK I think.
The playoffs have watered down the bowls so much anymore I can’t find myself giving a shit about them either, really.

I’m old school too. I’m old school enough to have seen this type of season many times over. This type of game, many times over. I’m not impressed by all those teams we beat the brakes off of because we were clearly in a much different class than they were. To me, the whole point of Kirby Smart being the head coach of the University of Georgia, is to get us past the LSU and Texas type of losses and have us on the other side of those Alabama games. Three years into to his tenure, it’s now time to produce different results. At this exact same point in his career at UGA, Richt produced at least equal, I’d say better, results. Please don’t give me that recruiting argument, I don’t care if we do it with 5 stars or 3 stars, I just want it done. I can live with playing our best and falling short, even if it means I don’t get to see another NC before I exit this world, but I’m tired of seeing shit shows like the LSU and Texas games when I know we’re capable of putting that trophy on display right here. I’ve seen that movie before, I don’t like the ending.

Dude don’t take this the wrong way, but I can’t ever remember kicking nine shades of shit out of the entire SEC east in back to back seasons. Or being the team that gets other coaches fired. Or scaring the shit out of Bama fans every time we play them. Or going on the road and beating ND with a freshman QB in his second start.
The fact that we are in a different class than those teams we beat the brakes off of is proof to me that we are on the right track and damn sure an improvement over going into an SEC east schedule knowing that UF, AU and UT were likely to kick our ass and eking out wins over south Carolina and tech. But hey, I’m a “glass half full” kind of guy. YMMV.

2002 was a great season, and 2003 was fun, but this revisionist history that Richt’s first 3 years was “better” some ridiculous nonsense.
          Vs GT
3-0 vs 2-1 (Going to give this round to Richt as that 2001 Tech team was better than anything the Genius trotted out vs Kirby)
          Vs Auburn
2-1 vs 3-1 Gus’s Barn teams were better than those Tuberville era teams.
          Vs Florida
0-3 vs 2-1 I’ll take beating UF over losing to the Zooker with arguably one of your best teams ever.

Blowing out a playoff contender Auburn in a revenge game > Beating an OK Arkansas team that was on in the game because Bama was on probation
Losing close to possibly Saban’s best Bama team > getting your doors blown off by Saban’s LSU

I don’t understand the Fromm-hate from this game. He was 60% passing with 3 touchdown passes and 1 interception. This despite being under constant pressure, no running real running game, and receivers dropping passes. Did he play great? Nope. But we’re so used to seeing him complete 70% that 60% seems like a really bad day.

      Like

      • Russ

I think it was the obvious misses that he usually hits. Of course, the few times he was on target the receiver dropped it, or it was stripped. Fromm didn’t play great, but the play calling didn’t help him out either. OL collectively took the night off for some reason.

        Like

        • The Truth

Russ’s last sentence is the most overlooked flaw in the game: the OL flat out stunk it up. No room to run and Jake never got comfortable with the D bearing down on him all the time. Pittman may have been the one out late on Rue Bourbon.

          Like

      • CB

The boxscore doesn’t show all of the missed throws that could have gone for scores, then again it doesn’t show the dropped passes either. I counted 5 that I can remember and 4 of them were Holloman.

Either way I think it’s fair to say that Fromm regressed to LSU form (where he also passed for 60%). His performance in both games would be acceptable for Hutson Mason or Greyson Lambert, but fans expect better from Fromm, and rightfully so imo. Not that he should be run out of town on a rail or anything.

Fromm padded his stats in the fourth quarter when Texas was playing prevent. His season average QB rating was 171.3. His QB rating for the night was:
        1st qtr: 80.2
        2nd qtr: 157.7
        3rd qtr: 12.6
        4th qtr: 193.7
        game: 136.3

And that was against a team that was ranked #112 in passing defense. So it was a bad night any way you cut it for Fromm.

Fromm had an awful game until it didn’t matter. His throws were all over the place, he struggled to get the team in the right play, and when he tried to run it was embarrassing.

It was a bad game for him, but he has had a lot of solid games.

Herrien and those seeing their first sustained action played hard, as did the seniors who were near the bubble of getting drafted into the NFL.

Sideline demeanor and the lack of communication showed it was a group of individuals rather than a team out there.

It’s a shame because you don’t get a chance to win a game against this kind of blue blood program or a Sugar Bowl that often. Shame on Kirby for not getting everyone ready to perform “to the standard.” Hopefully, it’s another lesson learned.

That’s what frustrates me the most. Sure, it wasn’t the playoffs, but it was Texas and the Sugar Bowl. That team and their fans were there and ready to prove themselves. Hearing, “that’s the big, bad SEC!” and the “SEC” chants made it worse. Our guys straight up humiliated all of us on Tuesday.

Also, this was the first game my kids have ever been to, and I had to promise them it’s a lot more fun when Georgia wins. I don’t want to make too much of one game, either, but the lack of effort from the whole team, and that I had to endure it sitting in the Texas section, made me not want to make a bowl trip again.

The fact that Kirby allowed a kid who decided not to play & another who is exploring a transfer to hang around took all attention from playing in the Sugar Bowl vs a blue blood. His decision implied that this wasn’t about our team & it wasn’t important to win. Instead it was more important to not ruffle feathers or hurt feelings.

We had too many players thinking the name on the back of the jersey was far more important than the logo on the helmet & all that care about our university.

It’s pretty rich to have that moniker and contend that one star player’s refusal to play in a glorified scrimmage negatively impacted the whole of the team. What would John Galt do– secretly design a genius playbook and withhold it from the program because he was dissatisfied being held back within a corrupt system? Jesus.

I sat 13 rows up in section 640 on the 50 yard line. I’m not a football novice and Texas’ defense had some alignments and slants that you don’t see a lot of in college football, lots of 3-3 and 4-3 with umbrella coverage. Their front 7 made our OLine look very slow. The Texas coaching staff took Georgia’s staff to school, hanging Fromm out to dry. Chaney was well scouted by Texas or they had our signals. Also, when the opponent’s offense does not sub Kirby seems to get lost on defense and resorts to playing very vanilla. He’s been married to two-deep all season leaving us outnumbered in the box without exceptional linebackers. Lots for Kirby to analyze from this game and he’s still clearly on the learning curve as a game manager. He’s improved Georgia due to great recruiting and superior practice management, good on good.

Great summary. Our first TD drive was finally grown man football. Either we didn’t, couldn’t, or lost the desire to sustain that. You can blame the kids for lack of execution, but the fault lies with the coaching to get them focused and find those on the sideline like Herrian who wanted to show something. Where was Cook? No jet sweep? Etc, etc.

Ultimately, I think the most distracted person on the UGA sideline may have been Kirby. The loss of Tucker had the HC wearing too many hats.

Or in team meetings/prep before the game, especially at the bowl site. That said, I think most of the team played hard in the game. The problem was in the preparation that many of them didn’t take seriously.

Fans’s lives matter. They deserve more than this if they’re going to be asked to spend thousands on a trip…or even hundreds on a regular season game/trip. He wasn’t really complaining, but how eager will he be to repeat that experience. It’s all about the fans and their money because when they quit, CFB will become a club sport again.
There would be a few still bitching had Georgia lost despite a herculean effort, but most would accept it. But to get the kind of product that was actually presented… for a small fortune disappoints.

Ever since winning the SEC and beating Oklahoma and going to OT with Bama for all the marbles last year… it seems this team has absolutely guzzled the rat poison thinking they are already good enough to just walk out and beat the hell out of anyone. I hope Kirby and the strength staff beats that entitled attitude out of everyone this offseason. By that logic why the hell did we fire Richt? Our schedule this year was an absolute joke. We lackadaisically cake walked through the first half of it before getting Chuck Norris roundhouse kicked by the first decent team we’d played all year in Baton Rouge. It was only then we got our collective shit together and started playing football up until our hearts were ripped out and stomped on again in Atlanta. BTW they went 11-3. You can’t just pretend the two end of season losses didn’t happen. We played 3 good teams with comparable talent to us all year and lost all 3… 2 of them by significant margins (Don’t start with Kentucky or Florida… they are getting better but both overachieved this season based on their talent level).

I hope that’s all it was was a shitty bowl performance… but my eyes saw a lot of shitty performances this season pre Florida and post Alabama… some weren’t exposed as much due to the level of competition we faced. I think this proves that we miss the level of leadership we lost from that 2017 team a lot more than just the talent alone. It can be fixed… but somebody is going to have to step up.

Players eligible for the NFL draft decide they will not play in a bowl in ’18 season sent a message to D1 programs.
Those programs [AD’s, coaches, sponsors, and donors] do not like this trend from ’17 thru ’18.
Their concern is they will see players start to do this during the regular season.
Slowly but surely the NFL is killing off college football under the current draft system.
Nothing wrong with the bowls and CFPs.
If the players are deemed student athletes the put the emphasis on the first word in the description.
Only draft seniors. There is only a certain amount of roster spots on NFL teams. So the number on those rosters is less than the college pool. There should be enough seniors to fill it.
Defer the workouts and drafts until in July.
Do not allow seniors to use their college resources to prep after the end of their senior season if they sit games.
When a player sits out a bowl or regular season game he has in effect declared himself a professional. Thus he should not be on the sideline during the bowl game. If regular season, then his college career is over.
College football is an amateur sport. Sitting out puts the cloak of a professional athlete on the player.
Sitting out means I am protecting “my asset” or “market value”. At that point his value is almost becoming determinable absent combine performances.
Disregard all these other discussions being made.
When you sit out you have made a conscience decision to no longer be an amateur. Move off the college roster.

When we first started talking about the likelihood or unlikelihood that players would eventually skip even the playoffs, I thought, “no way”. But if they expand the playoffs to the point that a team will have to play three extra games in the playoffs then it might happen. That’s what 8 teams would do. Right now, it’s bad enough with 4.

The Sugar Bowl never has been to UGA fans, and it certainly wasn’t to Texas. If a player or coach etc doesn’t want to participate in a scrimmage then don’t. Stay home. The vast majority of the fans don’t see it as a gloried scrimmage, otherwise they would not travel and spend the bucks. The problem is we have created an environment where the players are beginning to see it that way. From Daryl Huckaby’s article yesterday (on Baker sitting out)
” I also knew we were in trouble because his teammates were fine with that, and said so. Now this is the key to the whole thing. Actual quote. “If it were the play-offs that would be one thing, but this is just another bowl game.”
The problem becomes, if the players don’t care about the game, why should we?

Richt was criticized for losing lesser bowl games, but this Sugar Bowl was a scrimmage to some of those same critics. Wish I could follow that tortured logic.

    Brian Herrin always shows up.
He is a legit man and player. He is fun to watch. He is a team player. Someone when he takes the field he leave is on the field and not the sideline.
    Be that as it may.
Have not watch any replay of the game.
The concern I have is the lack of blocking adjustments Chaney and Pittman failed, refused, or did not know how to make.
Orlando knew that his seniors were more physical. They could control the gaps and running lanes with more physical players and numbers.
After all those coaches “had picked the brains of the Georgia coaches in the spring”.
Georgia’s coaches had a lot going on prior to bowl. Kirby was down a key coordinator. So perhaps he put more emphasis on the future roster rather than a bowl game, to a degree and not by design.
What input did the defensive coaches put into how a Texas defense would attack the gaps and blocking schemes of the offensive line.
The biggest failure other than those first quarter turnovers that lead to easy Texas scores [which in essence became the difference] was the play of the offensive line. But this is not the first time we have seen this. Florida’s goal line stand, LSU game, Alabama game.
This is a very young [mentally and physically] that is a work in progress. But I do not think Chaney and Pittman planned enough for Texas.
Smart said they went with starters for prep. Understand that. Were they tired? They never got a solid push on a consistent basis tii 4th quarter.
What would help even the numbers is a dual threat QB with more RPOs.
Plus why not put dual running back in at the same time. A few years back that is what Auburn did to spread the defense across the field and eliminate the numerical numbers by defense in closing or eliminating lanes.
    Out coached? Out played?
No doubt. They never gave themselves a chance.

Whoever influenced this kid (parents, grandma, grandpa, uncle frank) I don’t care. Did a wonderful job, Give me three or four of him on offense, three or four on defense and two or three on special teams and we whipping butt til the sun goes down.

Did watch part of the A&M game.
They were getting beat in the game and on the Oline.
TV showed Fisher after the Oline failed again when they came to the sideline Fisher meet with them. You could hear the Oline coach raising hell about them not getting a push.
When Fisher went of the field at halftime he was asked what adjustments they made. Without getting into specifics they had the line focus and adjust on their techniques.
Plus Mond is one hellava dual threat QB.
Hear that Chaney, Pittman, and Fromm.

Playing A&M at the end of the season after Auburn (or is it just before?) will be tough. Glad we have them at home.

We play them right before Yech, which is honestly hard for me to wrap my head around.

        Very odd schedule next season.

Right now I’m concerned about next year. I can see 4 losses unless there is substantial improvement; notre dame, florida, aubrin and a & m. I think that Gus is due for a return of his horseshoe (seems to happen every other year) and the other 3 are close enough to us in talent and have better game coaches.

        Hope I’m wrong.

Some people need some perspective. We don’t know what is going on in their lives. It was a game yes a game if they played to their potential they should have one but it still just a game. I watched and was disappointed as much for them as for me. I lost my mom to lung cancer this year after a 18 month battle so I get where this loss falls in the balance of life. I hope everyone can put it into proper perspective.

    • Deggy, my regrets for the loss of your Mom..and I agree on perspectives…I lost my son to a tragic accident this year…but I remember him as a player..won his team’s headhunter award as a linebacker..if I could hear him now it would be him saying ” they should have given it all to win”…I miss having him around to talk about the games and in toto the game doesn’t compare…but he would have been disappointed, too.

Thanks, my condolences to your on the loss of your son. My mom was a fighter too and while she would have been disappointed about a loss. She would not be calling for the coaches’heads and tearing down our team for this game which was an anomaly. You don’t do that because while the loss disappoints you; you also have perspective.

He was the spark this year against Tennessee (?). Remember that great picture of Kirby greeting him on the sidelines.
