U Mad Bro?

Life comes at you fast, Gators.

https://twitter.com/jbaba78189588/status/1084390464101466112

Yes, it’s true.

Georgia football coach Kirby Smart has named former Florida secondary coach Charlton Warren as the Bulldogs’ defensive backs coach after crossing paths with him earlier this week.

“Charlton is from Atlanta and has a wide range of experience coaching defensive football at several universities and conferences around the country,” Smart said in a UGA release issued Saturday.

“His entire coaching career has been on the defensive side of the ball and especially defensive backs,” Smart said. “He has developed an outstanding record and reputation in the coaching profession and he’ll bring great knowledge and energy to our staff.”

Warren is also considered a top recruiter. Warren was previously competing with Georgia for the services of Kaiir Elam, the 2019 class’ No. 7 cornerback.

Elam is believed to have narrowed his choices to the Bulldogs and the Gator. Elam was in Athens on Saturday on his official visit.

I’m sure that’s a complete coincidence.

Needless to say, this is going over less well in certain quarters…

… than in others.

It’s an interesting move on a number of levels.  There’s no way I think Kirby hired him to get a leg up on the Elam recruiting, but I’d be crazy to think there isn’t a little glee over the side benefit on that front.  That said, it hasn’t been a good week for Dan Mullen, as he’s gotten tag-teamed by Saban and Smart.

Bad feelings aside — not that there’s anything wrong with that — it sounds like a solid hire.  Warren is respected as both a recruiter and a position coach.  He did some good work in his only season in Gainesville.

Florida hired Warren after the Tennessee staff dissolved following the 2017 firing of Butch Jones.

The Gators defense made considerable improvement with Warren on board last season.

Florida went from being tied for 81s in the nation in takeways (17) to tied for 11h (26).

The Gators’ pass efficiency defense also picked up, ranking 17th in the nation…

It’s also a continuation of one offseason theme.  Georgia’s staff is getting noticeably younger/less experienced.  I’m sure that doesn’t hurt on the ol’ recruiting trail; it remains to be seen if there’s an effect on the Xs and Os.

And in the duh department, it looks like Kirby will be promoting internally on the coordinator front.  I’m sure McGarity doesn’t mind an occasional bout of frugality here and there, especially when you figure there’s a chance that the o-line coach may be about to become the highest paid (or close to the highest paid) position coach in the country.

LOLigators. Friendly reminder that even their champion head coaches (Spurrier and Meyer) also left Florida for better jobs.

  5. While it absolutely was a boss move by Kirby, and while I’m enjoying the salty tears from Gator fans as we speak, my concern is the whole axiom that whatever someone is willing to do with you, they’ll do to you too.

It was a bit shady for CW to host a prize recruit one weekend, then turn around and host him again – rather conveniently, I might add – as coach at a new school a few days later. Apparently CW also didn’t give Mullen any heads up that he was leaving, and if an assistant did that to us/Kirby, we too would be pissed.

With all that said, Mullen is a weird guy and Grantham is a difficult person to work for, so I’m tempted to give CW a bit of a pass.

The barbs tech fans try to use against UGA only prove it’s a school for people who are good at math but the rest of the world confuses them. UGay? Are they unaware that gay people are everywhere or are they homophobic? UGA is some sort of rural communty college? Have they checked out the rankings of public universities? Various derogatory terms for female UGA students or grads? Do you have a mother, wife, or daughter?

            Strange fan base.

No, even benign humor escapes the politically stupid crowd. Of course, they are lightening quick to excuse their own bigotry and use of stereotypes. Who cares what they think anyway? Inability to balance life seems to have made them angry most of the time, miserable group. Sad, but it is funny to see them overreact to even minor characterizations.

I just watched the clip of him at UNC (posted at Dawgnation) and he’s definitely coaching them to look back for the ball. I think Campbell is going to benefit greatly from the coaching.

The coaching carousel looks to be finished for us this year. So we have at minimum 2 guys that are position coaches that have also coached ST in Warren and Hartley. It sure will be interesting next year if Bobo comes back on the market. Frugality this year may just be pre-planning for next year.

From your reports to Cheney’s ears. Upgrading the backside D fundamentals, stimying down field passing, improving Interceptions, while hopefully securing another lock down corner committment, all whilst robbing the Gators at the same time = Priceless.

I like the hire. After the Rodney Garner experience I’m leery of hiring a guy who has a big rep as a recruiter, but lacks coaching ability. Warren appears to have a solid track record with his DBs showing significant improvement and as a recruiter. And the hire has the added benefit of inflicting pain and suffering on fu. What’s not to like?

I don’t have a clue which defensive coach gets the title of DC.

Do you really think Auburn’s DL has played poorly the last 6 seasons? From my perspective that’s been the best unit they’ve had since Garner showed up down there.

Garner has always been a great recruiter of DL talent. Lots of his guys in the NFL but he has lived off of the talent of the guys. I’m sure over time he has finally learned to coach his guys up but while at UGA he could only teach them to bull rush. If the Oline was good it was a stalemate. His UGA guys always did better in the pro’s than when at UGA. I’m just hoping that we don’t end up with a lot of talent and only a few really good position coaches.

You mean guys like David Pollock and Jonathan Sullivan?

Recall Pollack was a DT as a freshman. I heard a radio interview where Mark Richt recounted how Pollack hated being under Garner, and discussed leaving UGA after his freshman season. Instead, he was shifted outside to DE, was coached by Fabris, and the rest is history. Am I the only person who heard Richt tell that story during a radio interview years ago? I must also be the only one who heard how darn near everybody who worked with Garner disliked him, from players like Darius Swain, to BVG, to CTG. But to Garner’s credit, he can recruit – as long as you keep after him and don’t get complacent, like CMR did.

True or not are you saying that what we need is more Fabris?

I don’t think Pollock’s performance should be credited to any coach. He did the work. He made the plays.

Also he only played inside due to need as a freshman.

Sully was a top 10 pick that didn’t do a damn thing at the next level.

Two areas probably require the least X’s and O’s knowledge: RB’s and DL. Those positions are primarily talent driven. That’s why most staffs have recruiters at those spots.

QB and Safeties are the places where you’re actually better off with football IQ than just playing on talent alone.

Hopefully he drives by a dumpster on his way out of Gainesville. and gets rid of all that orange fabric. Anyone else think this may not play well with Elam? I don’t know how much his likelihood to commit is tied to his recruiter but some would find the timing of back to back weekends, giving totally reverse messages, might be seen negatively by some young men.

The lack of a DC announcement by Kirby at this point seems to lean toward him not naming current staff to the DC/co-DC position. Those guys are already on staff, he could have done that weeks ago. There are only four teams still playing football, so if that is the reason for the delay, where would our DC come from? Not knowing who Kirby knows, and respects, on those staffs my wild ass guess is someone on the Patriots. It is well known that Saban and Belicheck are pretty close and talk often, there have also been a few pow-wows involving the staffs to exchange ideas. May be weak reasoning but I don’t know enough about the options available and cannot come up with a better reason for what the delay is.

The NCAA limits the # of “coaches” so the DC is a current position coach, HC, or someone is leaving.
