The indispensable man

Word comes that Nick Saban’s making a change at another coaching position:

Alabama could have at least seven new assistant football coaches for the 2019 season, topping the six new faces on Nick Saban’s staff from a year ago.

The latest change is occurring on defense, as multiple media outlets have reported Mississippi State defensive line coach Brian Baker is expected to leave for the same role with the Crimson Tide. Alabama’s defensive line coach this past season, Craig Kuligowski, apparently will no longer be a member of Saban’s full-time staff.

The amazing part to me isn’t so much the wholesale staff turnover as it is that Saban has yet to make any official announcement on the new hires.  Who in the hell is recruiting for the Tide right now?  (Besides Saban, I mean.)

Saban was a vocal critic of the early signing period. I wonder if his views have changed on that now. If he’d had all this upheaval under the prior system, they’d be sweating bullets going into signing day. As it is now, none of it really matters, the #1 class hay is in the barn, and he has plenty of time to get it all sorted out.

    The name “Alabama” recruits itself.

It certainly does these days, and has for the past 5+ years since this run began. Staff turnover and talent full position rooms do not seem to impact them much at all. Look at how they have avoided, until recently, the player transfer issue…despite number of 4 and 5 star backups. And they still get top recruits even when 3-4 deep with experienced talent ahead of the incoming players. At UGA we have a highly publicized recruit transfer after a freshman season where he played as much as a backup QB than the Heisman runner up QB did his freshman year at Bama, and a #1 RB in Emery decommit from UGA citing as a factor, too much competition ahead of him at UGA. Everyone will be better off when this cools off in Tuscaloosa.
(Although, Dabo is building something really special at Clemson and he is much younger. Look at the NFL candidates that came back for this past year’s team when they were given high draft grades. Athletes really like the atmosphere the staff has created up the road. Tough neighborhood we live in.)

  4. All of this absolutely highlights how the Bammer program is going to collapse under its own weight when Saban gets too old for recruiting. The day is coming soon. Last January was an omen. December was a rumble. This January was the first crack to show.

      2010 beget 2011 and 2012. 2013 beget a 5 year playoff run, 4 title game appearances and 2 titles.

The man uses failure really well.

I think most of the cracks I saw at Alabama this year, much like ours, were coaching related. I’m believing Saban saw the same thing, thus the coaching turnover. I thought there were cracks in their recruiting starting to show last year. From the looks of this years class, I was wrong. BTW, I’m not in the camp of waiting for Saban to retire or deminish. Our time is now. The East has been ours for the taking and will be next year too. Eventually, that’s going to change and the competition will get better. We need to get over the hump now and make our mark now. I belive the longer it takes, the more OUR chances start to deminish. I’m not sure we can have a better stocked football team than we have right now. It’s better than we’ve had in decades, if you look at how the talent is rated. This is our window. What a shame it would be to let it pass us by while waiting on Saban to become old enough to deminish. You take these things. You don’t wait on them to come to you.

Recruiting? They don’t need no stinking recruiting! They are Alabama! Anybody who is anybody is standing in line at the door to get in! (eye roll)

I’d like to know more about why he’s not keeping Kuligowski. It seemed like a pretty big deal last year when Bama lured him away from Miami.

This coaching shuffle news is your daily reminder that you’re a chump if you sign during the early signing period.

Saban is clearly wasting his talents at Bama and should be running a multinational.

Picture Darth Vader using the Force to reach out across the cosmos to control the will of 5* players to come to Alabama. That’s how he recruits.
