Check out Anthony Dasher’s early look at what’s coming back on that side of the ball to get your blood pressure lowered after the Daniels and Burton news (or, if you’re that sort of fan, the Bennett news).
Tl;dr version: there is a shit ton of talent coming back in 2022. Here are a few bullet points for your consumption:
- Quarterback. Even if Beck joins Daniels in a search for greener pastures, you’ve still got the nation’s number four passer rating, followed by a five-star and a four-star recruit (both of whom run better and throw better than does Bennett).
- Running back. The top three are good and should help Georgia carry on. My only question here is whether there’s a fourth coming in who steps up to make the rotation.
- Tight end. I don’t get the whispers about Washington wanting to leave. With Fitzpatrick’s departure, he’s going to see plenty of playing time in Monken’s offense. (Assuming he stays healthy, that is.)
- Wide receiver. The wild card is Arik Gilbert. If he’s back, look out.
- Offensive line. There are nineteen names on Dasher’s list. Three of them — Ericson, McClendon and Van Pran — are returning starters. A fourth, Broderick Jones, saw plenty of action when Salyer went down. And a fifth, Ratledge, was in line to start until he was sidelined by injury for the season. (What I saw of Ratledge at G-Day made me think he was the best pulling lineman on the roster, something that’s a big deal for Luke and Monken.)
All that’s before we find out if Kirby lands a player or two out of the transfer portal. In short, there’s enough personnel there to expect the offense in 2022 to be pretty, pretty good.
If you have Bowers and Gilbert (if available) as hybrids (wide receivers in tight end bodies) with Washington as an every down tight end, you can virtually be in 13 personnel as much as you like. With McIntosh in particular, you can go empty. You can bring guys in tight and run. You can create match-up nightmares down the field. As long as SBIV continues to develop or one of the young guns takes the job, this offense could be dangerous.
In Todd we trust.

I’ll put good money that Robinson will be able to pass block. He seems like a smart kid that can pick up the play book and the pass block schemes We know he has the size and we know he can run.

And…I completely concur with your assessment. I had almost the same comments on another board, sans the question about an incoming RB. And I was also as confident in the OL; I think this line could be in the Joe Moore conversation myself.

Don’t sleep on Daijun Edwards either. I’ve been impressed with him in his limited playing time.

100%. He runs hard. Reminds me of a bigger Brian Herrien.

That’s a good comp. Edwards is probably my favorite under the radar guy right now.

Do not compare student athletes here, the way UGA football OC used/utilized Mr. Cook this past season as that utility/multi down type player is a position that maybe difficult to replace, am saying Mr. Cook worked his way into that position…GO DAWGS!

Edwards make it hurt to tackle him.

Edwards also caught a lot of passes in the Colquitt County Rush Probst offense.

The O-Line will be a strength and Ratledge is the best, nastiest of the bunch.
Knowing from the get go that Stetson is our QB, I don’t give a shit what Kirby says – he’s our QB, changes the entire outlook. He’s fantastic in Monken’s offense and distributes the ball much like Wuerffel did when he was surrounded by all that talent. It’s not NFL style, it is perfect for CFB and the proper play calls.
Hoping Branson Robinson gives us that Zeus power back because Milton is not that. He’s good but he can’t give us those brutal, strength runs that we will need.

YVMV, but I think Milton has that in him, at least before he got hurt. Go back and look at some of his first year runs.
If Milton and Blaylock hadn’t got hurt they wouldn’t be here anymore. As it is, we get a chance to see if they can produce like they appeared capable pre-injury.

I think Edwards may be our Zeus style bruiser.

Yeah. He runs like he is angry, like Holyfield ran. Being so small he is hard to bring down too.

I’m ready for another Gurley with that blend of vision and power or the Chubb shiftiness. A jaw-dropper.

Not worried about the offense. Just a matter of how quickly the defense can get comfortable at the LB position. Star will improve, D-Line while not as deep is still quite good, with two STUD freshmen coming in. Loads of talent to fill secondary spots – young -but talented – it comes down to linebacker and who is going to lead the play-calling on defense.

We’ve been able to reload rather than rebuild for a few years now. That’s what good ‘crootin’ do. We’ll just have to wait and see if we’re really good or really, really good this coming season.

That’s right, UpgrayeddedTronan. It was a record setting O with backup Bennett. I look forward to seeing what he can do with QB1 reps from spring and summer camp. The D just cycles like a belt fed MG.

The weakest group might actually be RB. Which is a weird to type, but my honest feeling….

I know Milton and McIntosh have been around longer, but man, I would REALLY like to see what Edwards could do with 20 carries a game (which, how we rotate RBs, no one will get).
It looks less likely we’re gonna land Williams, especially with Burton leaving, but there’s enough smoke there to hope.

As long as Monken stays out of the portal, I’m not worried about the offense at all

I was coming into the comments to post basically this exact comment. If you tell me that Todd Monken is in Athens this fall then I’ll tell you I feel fine about our offense. The post-championship glow is such that I’m not all that worried anyway, but if Monken is scheming our offense then I feel like we’ll be able to score some points with the national championship-winning quarterback or the player who was able to beat out the national championship-winning quarterback.
I feel like typing “national championship-winning quarterback” again, so there it is.

Provided we remain healthy and we keep our OC, I think this 2022 offense will be stacked better than in 2021. Kirby’s roster management is paying off in spades.
Even at RB, we have power runners who can also act as receivers…Dell McGee is a wunderkind (or in Ted Lasso speak wunder-kid)…even though he’s past his 30’s…he’s a phenomenal recruiter and coach.

It’d be nice to keep Monken around at least through the 2022 season and longer. I have confidence that CKS will hire someone as good if he leaves. But I’d like to see what Monken’s O is capable of with consistency at QB1.

What do people consider to be the high water mark of UGA offense under Smart?
Was it the 2018 season? That was a pretty loaded offense, 2017 with Chubb and Sony?
Rank the 2021 behind or ahead of either of those 2 groups?

I’ll say the team that Beat Bama and won The National Championship.

Yep, this offense could beat you in so many different ways. Wasn’t flashy because we were strangling teams, but could score in different ways.
