Here’s an interesting trivia question for you: what do Georgia, Army, Navy and Air Force have in common? Per 247 Sports’ transfer portal database, these four football teams are the only ones on the FBS level that have not added a single player via the transfer portal this offseason.
If you read the linked piece, there’s definitely a sense the coaching staff was somewhat surprised that fewer players opted to hit the transfer portal than expected. (And don’t forget a certain five-star offensive lineman who dipped his toe in the portal and then decided to stay after all.)
I had heard whispers earlier in the spring that they were looking to add maybe three players from the portal, but now, it appears that there won’t be any new faces coming in. The staff and the players obviously have a lot of confidence in each other.
There seems to be some strife that Georgia didn’t take anybody. Kirby has had a pretty consistent message. If he sees a player or players that will help the team, then he’ll go after them. Guessing that there were one or two that he saw as the right fit. Either he deemed the roster didn’t have the room or they decided to go somewhere else.
It was kind of refreshing to see no moves made. I think Georgia might be a tad bit better in some positions on defense than Kirby and company are letting on.

It is all about team chemistry and buying in to the culture. Also helps recruiting nobody wants to leave and if you stay and develop .we won’t stick a transfer ahead of you. As an Alum I am glad we are not like A&M.

The article mentions the late additions of Kendrick and Gilbert last year. DK was in Athens as soon as his legal issues were resolved … he was probably a silent commit for a while. We heard enough about Gilbert after his decision to not to go to Florida to know that he really wanted to be close to home. Kirby knew these two plus Tykee Smith were roster upgrades.
All that is to say the reason we haven’t taken anyone is that there isn’t a talent in the portal that would be an immediate upgrade over a player currently in the 2-deep depth chart. IMHO, that’s a big positive entering this season especially when you still have some roster work to do.

Yup. Lots of programs will just take warm bodies to fill holes. But when you recruit and coach like UGA does, you don’t need to do that.

Much like Army, Navy, Air Force, one does not transfer into, one will enlist/commit and one does not transfer out, one is discharged or retires and is a member for life…at UGA, the Process is in red and black, give your best for two/three years and move on the next level of life…and are a DAWG for life…Dismissed!

With 30 recruits and a returning roster that skews young anyway, avoiding even more turnover and emphasizing continuity seems like the right recipe.

That seems to be Kirby’s formula. Dopey/Goofy Dan may have been the Portal Master, and Junior may be the Portal King. I’ll take the guy who can clean up in high schooler living rooms all over the country as the guy to build a roster meant to succeed over the long term.

Y’all are gonna consider me an idiot for saying this, but as much of an advertisement for our program Travon Walker is, John Fitzpatrick might be close.
Thinking about transferring where it MIGHT work out? That’s fine, just remember, our THIRD STRING TE got drafted.

I’m almost certain there were players rumored to be headed to the portal that we wanted badly, but then they chose to stay and Kirby said, “Nah, I’m good.” I also expect there were many in the portal who wanted to come her and Kirby said, “Nah, we’re good.”

If you’re seeking playing time at then rarely will you be able to break the 2-deep for the Defending National Champion Georgia Bulldogs.
Something tells me that Kirby is holding KK while everyone else is raising pre-flop.
