Irony

Believe me, the timing is not lost on me:  a college football blogger whose been knocked out of action by some health issues as the sport — and, more specifically, the team he follows — reacts to what feels like nothing less than a seismic shift.

And by “seismic shift”, you could do a lot worse than this for an illustration.

We’re not living in Saban’s world anymore, that’s for sure.

Money downed

Ah, hell, can’t resist sharing the news that Geoff Collins has been hired to succeed Gene Chizik as the DC at North Carolina. (Gotta think the Chapel Hill Waffle House is excited.)

Anyway, if you’re environmentally conscious, you’ve got to be impressed with Mack Brown’s commitment to recycling.

A quick note.

Sorry for the absence of posts this week, but a medical issue has arisen. I’m getting through it and regular posting will resume shortly.

Also, getting old leaves something to be desired.

“I coulda been a contendah!”

Easily the most pathetic note struck last night…

Sure, man.

Actually, I’m a little surprised he got anyone to listen to him.

That went as well as expected.

Stat of the season

Okay, new quarterback, new offensive coordinator… who saw this coming back in August?

72.4 – Beck finishes the season with a 72.4 completion percentage, which is now a school record, passing the 68.3 percentage that Stetson Bennett set last season.

I sure didn’t.  I guess it’s one more thing we can blame Bobo for.

Herbie’s opt outs solution

Just give up.

On College GameDay, Kirk Herbstreit made a bold statement about what he thinks should happen to the games going forward. Get rid of them, he said.

“I think the 12 team playoff is gonna create a lot of buzz,” Herbstreit said. “I’m a college basketball fan. Tell me about the N.I.T. How is that going for you? Do you know who’s even in the NIT? That’s where the bowls are going next year.

I think you eliminate the bowls. Nobody wants to play in them. Don’t play bowls. Just have the 12 teams. We’ll get excited about those. And if you want to add five or six bowls outside of that, then do five or six. But we’re getting to a point where it’s ridiculous. We’re putting 6-6 teams in bowl games that nobody cares about. Players don’t want to play in them. Hell with it! Don’t have bowl games.”

Well, if you don’t have bowl games in the first place, there’s certainly nothing to opt out from.  But I imagine Herbstreit’s bosses at ESPN probably aren’t on board with ditching a primary source of December programming… er, profitable December programming.

For that matter I question his assertion that nobody wants to play in them.  Methinks there’s some projection going on there, Herbstreit.

Kirby’s call to arms

You may have already heard this clip.

I appreciate the sincerity, but notice that it’s a suggestion short on details.  And that’s fair; he’s not the dude running the sport, just a head coach who’s unhappy with what he saw.

Honestly, I’m not sure what can be done about opt outs.  Nicole Auerbach ($$) has a list of five suggestions, all well meaning, which range from meaningless to impractical.  (People watch the minor bowls, but not for the stars; paying players not to opt out of those seems like a waste of Mickey’s money.)

But she does touch on another type of opt out that would have me livid if I were a fan of Auburn.

After Auburn lost 31-13 to Maryland in the Music City Bowl, Tigers head coach Freeze was asked to assess the team’s game plan. “Well, obviously I don’t feel like it was an effective one,” Freeze told reporters. “I didn’t get too involved in it for most of the part until this week because of recruiting, and really wanted to kind of evaluate everything about our program.”

Essentially, Freeze said he opted out of game prep but showed up to stand on the sidelines.

Her suggestion is to get rid of early signing day so that coaches like Freeze aren’t inconvenienced.  So why is it the guy who makes millions and can pull bullshit like that the one who should be catered to, instead of the recruit who’s known for months where he wants to go and is ready to be done with the process?

Love to hear Kirby discuss that.

New kids on the block

Jesse Palmer wents nuts over this tandem block that destroyed an FSU linebacker and sprung Arian Smith for a touchdown…

… as well he should have.

Looks like Georgia may be in pretty good shape on the o-line next season.
