… This year’s Florida-Georgia game did several things to the series. For one thing it made the game a rivalry again. Georgia’s coach Mark Richt also turned the game into a much more personal event with the celebration display after Georgia’s first touchdown. This will long be remembered by Gator fans and coaches, coaches who hail from the midwest and never had any vested animosity in this game prior to this year. While I’m convinced the Bulldogs would have won the game regardless of that celebratory display, the result of that event will be measured on its effect on Georgia’s psyche the rest of the season and in the emotional intensity of future games in the series.
And they mocked me when I posted this.

Yeah, the rivalry is “on” for sure. Every Gator fan I know is white hot about the results of that game and about the actions of Coach Richt. It is going to be Gator Nation’s #1 circled game on the calendar for ’08.

And by the way, I don’t care about injuries. Yeah, our defense was unbelievably banged up, backups were banged up, we had freshmen in there, blah, blah, blah. It’s not a viable excuse in the SEC. We all deal with injuries.
We lost, Georgia won, fair and square.
But we are… *avidly* … looking forward to next year’s game.

I love college football rivalries. I’m thrilled this one is back to the level it should occupy. And based on recent recruiting classes for both schools, it should be a helluva series over the next few years.

Interesting…..every Gator fan I know had no problem with the celebration and saw it for what it was, a motivational tool for the Dogs.
The celebration is not at issue with the gator fans that say they are upset by it. The fact that they lost upsets them. If the gators won, then they would be laughing at the celebration and would not harbor any lingering offense.
Winning the game and being competetive in the series has made this a rivalry again. Not the celebration.

The guy starts out by saying “While I’m convinced the Bulldogs would have won the game regardless of that celebratory display…” then precedes to make excuses with the “staggering” amount of injuries. Please! Just take it like a man.
Anyway I do agree the rivalry will be more intense the next few years.
I don’t know what UF fans Hassan knows but there not the ones calling us classless rednecks, and other thoughtful names, while we were leaving the stadium and walking back to our car.

What I don’t get is why Gator fans and the UF team is talking so much about “next year.” Why did they have to wait? The celebration happened in the 1st Quarter, they had nearly an entire game to get angry and do something about it and they couldn’t. They had at least 3 quarters and looked clueless each time Knowshon had the ball and bumbling when the Dog’s punished Tebow with sack after sack. No excuses.

No excuses here. Although I felt the celebration was a really dangerous move by Richt, and bad for college football in general, I never wrote about it because the Gators were unable to stop the Dawgs thereafter. We were outmuscled in that game, and it hurts.
